True. That was a hard game to watch. Still a fan. I respect your opinion. I just hope you keep in mind that he will be helping your team, as a backup/special teamer/wildcat "qb" etc.. If your actually a jet fan that is..
One of his worst traits is he absolutely doesn't see receivers if they're about 10 yards down the field and in. He looks so far downfield, and there's a dump off available a lot of times. If he would just take that checkdown on a lot of plays, he could cover up for his green-ness a lot more. But instead he shuffles around and either does something wonderful with his feet, or creates a bad play.
he's one of our guys now, we should all be rooting for him to play well and help us win. It won't be as a QB but he will still be a valuable part of our team.
It is by far his worst trait. He locks on to his first receiver, and when that receiver doesn't get the 5 yards of separation that Tebow needs to throw the football, he scrambles around like an idiot. This results in both unnecessary sacks and fumbles. It also results in unnecessary holding calls due to the line having to keep defenders off of him for 10 seconds, and gassed receivers having to run 10 second routes every other play. I pointed out in another thread that in the playoff loss to the Pats, Tebow had underneath routes wide open the entire game, but his field vision is so poor that he does not even consider a check-down until his first read is blanketed by a corner and a safety because he has been staring him down since the ball was snapped. And even then, he will run the ball more often than checking-down to his 2nd or 3rd receiver.
I am rooting for anybody in a Jets jersey to help the team. I'm just not interested in hearing hyperbole about how incredible he was in pee wee or on the Broncos or anywhere else. I'm just concerned with how he does as a Jet. I'm not a believer that anybody in a Jets jersey is the best at whatever position they play, so I'm not going to suddenly get on the Tebow glory train.
You are cherry-picking his worst game to evaluate his whole career on. There are several very long highlight video clips to show why you SHOULD like Tebow.
Anyone can put together a highlight reel. It's easy to cherry pick his best throws and runs out of all of his starts. I could do the same for Ryan Leaf, or JaMarcus Russell. By the way, despite setting an NFL record for consecutive 3-and-outs, not converting a 3rd down until there was 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, fumbling 3 times, and throwing a pick, Detroit was not his worst game. The pile of shit he served up in Buffalo makes Detroit look like an All-Pro performance.
Highlights show what he is capable of. The theory of any player's development is that he shows flashes of what he is capable of, and learns to make good decisions and do what he is capable of most every play. It is extremely hard to play quarterback in the NFL. There are stretches where all of them look wretched. Whether you're the player, the coach, or a fan, sometimes you have to turn the page and move on. He bounced back from that Detroit game and presided over a 38-24 thumping of the Raiders in the Black Hole. QB rating of 98, so a more effective game by his standards. If you didn't see that back and forth, the tendency to meet each failure with a renewed determination and improvement, you'd give up. But the key is to sandwich the bad games with some good games. He had three what I would call horrid games last year. The rest were either a mixed bag or decent, with 2 or 3 of what I would call "good."
To me, that's a sign that Tebow doesn't trust Tebow. (Perhaps with good reason.) In his mind, if it's less than 10 yds, he probably figures he's got as good a chance of making the play with his legs as he does with his arm. That's been true his entire career. Except when he had Harvin. A lot of Harvin's yardage came on bubble screens and short passes.
Highlights and lowlights would appear to be opposites of the same thing, but they are not. A video clip of me performing a 360 dunk from the three-point line one time proves that I have outstanding athletic ability. A video clip of me missing 10 jump shots does not prove anything.
Or it proves you got luck once and managed to do it. I had a hole in one when I was 26...did that prove I was going to be a star on the PGA tour? By the way im now 43 and I have played probably another 450+ rounds and I haven't ever been close again.
Meh, I'm still not going to soapbox and say that the guy has played excellent all the time. I'm also going to try and not apologize for the hideous display of quarterbacking that was the lions game. HOWEVAH! Some perspective might be useful here. Tebow's 2nd start of the season, directly after the bronco's traded away their #1 WR. There's some things in that video I like actually. Namely that during the worst game of his career. At no point is he giving up, curled into a ball like this.... Sadly this is the first google image for QB Fetal Position...
