Unfortunately for us, he's bearing more of a resemblance to Dwayne Crutchfield. Iowa State ... but close enough.
The Jets had two 40+ yd plays all of last season. Greene had one 40+ yd run @BUF but it was called back because of a Matt Mulligan penalty. Obviously his lack of speed forced Mulligan to hold.
It's the Curtis Martin vs. Lamont Jordan (when Jordan was still a backup here) debate all over again. Martin was dependable and the opposite of flashy. Always got his handful of yards no matter what. Hardly ever busted a big run, but always got what was there, and hardly ever lost yardage. Jordan was seen as a sound back, but was capable of blowing a game open with the big exciting play. So fans were clamoring for Jordan to get more carries as time went on. Eventually Jordan was allowed to walk and signed with Oakland, where he proved to be pretty much average as a starter, but he would occasionally break the big run. The Jets made the right choice in keeping the future HOF'er. But the debate resurfaced again when we had Thomas Jones (who is still the closest to Cmart that I have seen since he retired). Just getting the 4-5 yards every time wasn't good enough for people. Now Greene was not that consistent a year ago, and wasnt the guy that was always going to get what was there. If he improves in his consistency, I certainly won't find fault in him being a 4 yards and done guy. We would all love the player who consistently gets 4 yards, but then twice a game breaks a 40 yarder. But they don't grow on trees...
Jordan couldn't stay healthy, he had the talent and was very productive when on the field in Oakland. The point isn't that OMG GREENE SUCKZ SO BADZ, it's that he's just not great and he doesn't have that second gear.
even when healthy he wasn't as dynamic as people hoped he would be. But injuries are part of the game, and if you can't stay healthy that hurts your dependability. It's part of the reason Curtis was as amazing as he was. Backs today just can't stay healthy for the better part of a decade. You guys are arguing about two different things, I hope you realize...
Statistically, Greene did run the ball more when trailing than he did when winning...twice as much more. Which is partly why I say Shotty was a poor OC. http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/12500/shonn-greene
Or maybe, our incoherent offense and poor line play kept anyhing from happening. I seem to recall a big game in SD where he ran ver a safety and sprinted t the end zone and the closest guy to catching hm was.....Cro? Yeah, he's got foot speed issues.
I hate to say I said so, but I said so. That's right I'm saying it. Anyway, enough of that...when I looked at his college footage I didn't see anything the would lead me to believe he could be that back that could dominate. He had dominating moments in college...but that's college. Most of the guys he broke tackles on are accountants, and sports physical therapists now....I don't really know that, but you get the point. Who knows, maybe he'll have a magical transformation.
You're going to have to break it down for us, make your own argument and not just post a link, since those stats do not show what you think they do. For example, focusing on Greene rushing attempts when the Jets were behind do not show much since the Jets did such a poor job scoring in the first quarter, they were often behind in games in the first half. But being down one score in the first half is not a reason to abandon the run, obviously. Look instead at the breakdown in rushes by quarter: 1st - 74 2nd - 60 3rd - 65 4th - 54 Obviously over the course of the season Greene was used less late in the game because by then on average the Jets were behind enough, with not enough time left to run the ball. Use of him the most in the first quarter also shows the Jets ran the ball early, trying to establish the run. The number of attempts during Jet wins was also 145, with the attempts in Jet losses 108. Again this is consistent with running the ball when ahead and using the pass while behind as the game winds down. Sounds like a rather conventional approach to football. How does it show Schotty was a poor OC? Your post is just more unsupported nonsense by Schotty Haters.
^you my friend are an idiot if you think he has not been dominate in BIG games for us. The guy literally turned out the lights against the Pats in the play offs. Ran up a storm against the Steelers on given opportunities. Pounded the Chargers and the Bengals into submission and beasted the Colts. All BIG post season games the Greene machine came, saw and conquered. He has maintained a high avg yd/s per carry, protected the football and has been very productive on the ground. Schotty is the only reason why Shonn Greene has been unable to find his way into your heart. Sparano will change everything on the ground and you can expect cupid to strike you with arrow soon. Reggie Bush is a good running back, but he doesn't see pay dirt unless his coach calls the plays that put him in the best position to succeed.
Hold on there handsome, why ya so angry? Normally I would have agreed with you, but when I looked at the stats after your post, I was surprised at what they were. Last year our season was screwed, I don't think most of those stats mean much of anything going forward, but it does show we ran the ball a ton when behind. We also had other backs who could have changed the overall look of our run stats. I'm not a Shotty hater, not sure where you got that from. I don't think he was very good at using our players to the fullest, I think his play calling was average, but some of the calls were pretty bad or he did a piss poor job at getting the players to understand/execute them.
You said Schotty was a poor OC. That means you liked him? The Jets were behind a lot last season, largely due to a failure to score early. The breakdown of Greene rushes by quarter shows he ran the ball more early in games. I addressed this already, but you must not be very perceptive. When a team is down by a score in the first half, there is no reason to abandon the run. When a team is down by a score, or two scores, with twenty or less to go, there is a very good reason to run it less, and even abandon it, depending.
I think it should also be brought up that all teams rushing attempts per quarter would be lower in the 4th quarter. Whether they're winning or losing. I would think winning teams are trying to run the clock as much as possible resulting in less total plays run in the 4th quarter. Not taking either side here but just something thought i'd throw out there.
I wasn't trying to take a side either, just my surprise at the stats. BB, lighten up dude, have a beer, get laid. Not everyone is looking to argue. I think Obama is a poor President, but I don' hate him either.
copied from the draft forum: Not only does Greene not break tackles, he isn't a good receiver and he's not a good pass blocker. Because of his injuries, I don't think he can even take the beating from constantly trying to pound the rock. He's a RB that usually takes what the OL gives and not much more. Without a strong OL, I've got doubts he can even excel in a RB by committee because he's a 1-dimensional RB who doesn't even excel in that one dimension. Greene can be productive with a solid O-Line but he has very real limitations.
Surely the mistreated Schottenheimer is free of blame in this case too? The dude's unit called a timeout on the battlefield as they approached their opportunity to strike first at the enemy. Sorry, not a good general. Why you defend the guy with such ferocity as if it were veracity is beyond me. Let's see what happens this season instead of lamenting Schottenheimer's departure behind the veil of calling out his bashers in nearly every.single.thread.
Let's not over react- He is a fine back when O-line is solid and play calls are less predictable He has enough power and speed - especially late when defense is not too keen on laying the wood (losing big) Is he dynamic playmaker? No, but if the team had more leads, better line, better OC, and better passing it would be a different article
But it's all execution. If Jets won, it wouldn't have mattered. He is not to blame. It's ALL the players' fault. They all fail to execute on a regular basis. They just can't get out of the gate and score in the first quarter. Jets offense is another name of offensive ineptitude. They make the genius OC look real bad.
