most popular and who most exemplifies what jet player should be are 2 different things. As far as that question goes for me it's w/o a doubt Curtis Martin. All class, worked as hard as anyone, not the most talented guy but always consistent, always reliable and durable.
What a JET should be during their playing days: Joe Namath. What a JET should not be when retired: Joe Namath.
so we should want our players to have a brief flash of greatness and have their career flame out way too early b/c of injuries?
Way too many ways to answer this question. IMO if it's "Who is the person who best symbolizes the Jets?" it's going to be Namath for most people over 45 or so and Chrebet or Klecko (maybe Martin) for most people younger. If it's "Who was the best player ever for the Jets?" it depends on whether you mean at peak value or over an entire career; I would say that if it's the former it's Namath (or maybe Toon), if it's the latter it's Maynard, Martin, or Klecko (interestingly, depending on how things go over the next few years, Revis could become the answer to both of those versions of the question). If you mean "Who was the Jet player most worthy of admiration?" I would say Martin or Chrebet.
sticking to the original question I think Wayne is the most popular Jet of all time. Namath is the most legendary, Curtis is the most respected, and Wayne is the most popular. Once the Jets win the SB again this will all change. JMO.
Not to derail the thread, but I almost always agree with Namath's perspective on things Jets related. Now, whether or not he should always be so vocal about those opinions... that's a topic for another thread.
Brief flash - whatever you want to call it. It lead to 1 super bowl. Yep, that is ok with me. If Sanchez can be half as great and win a super bowl and then never play again, that is ok with me.
Martin was the best I saw. But it was tough between him and Wayne, as Wayne worked his tail off to be who he was.
Curtis worked pretty damn hard too, no one outworked Curtis. I agree I want a SB no matter what but Joe is not the guy that most exemplifies what a Jet player should be.
I voted C-Mart, but I think Maynard is far too overlooked in Jets history. I'd totally vote for Boozer second! There should be a Lyons/Klecko combo option, too!
Martin is the best Ive witnessed, but I voted off the title of the thread (before reading the first sentance "in your lifetime") lol so I voted Namath
my sentiments exactly! plus had Toon not had the concussion issues, he really could have been one of the greats!!!
