per Schefter surprised this hasnt been posted on here yet... Dont know if this means much but its beginning to look bad already... my god...
I don't get why this look bad? Rex already came out and said on record that he held him out to let the other DE's compete. They've seen enough of what Coples can do.
It means precisely nothing - jeezus dont buy into the media crap - they will do anything to make it look at though there are issues on the Jets - see Cimini's slanted article for exhibit 1. edit: (Cimini back tracking on his earlier BS) - UPDATE: Rex Ryan, speaking to reporters two hours after practice, said they decided to sit No. 1 pick Quinton Coples in team drills so they could evaluate other players. It wasn't related to an injury or a disciplinary reason. "He's fine," Ryan said. "There's no injury, there's no nothing. It was just my decision." Ryan said it's not uncommon to remove players, especially linemen, from drills in a rookie minicamp. He didn't give any reasons, except to say, "We've already evaluated Quinton." Logically, it makes sense because the drills tend to get sloppy and you don't want to risk injury in the trenches, especially to a key player.
By the time Schefty had posted this on Twitter, Rex was already done speaking with the media and had already explained why Coples was sitting out towards the end of practice. I like Schefty a lot. But his job as someone in the media is still to get people talking.
haha really? They've already seen all that Coples can do without playing a single down or having 1 official practice under his belt?? thats funny and that makes sense!!!
there are loads of average to below average players going hell for leather trying to make an impression to try to make the team - I wouldnt want my prize draft pick stuck in the middle of a loads of guys trying to make a point (and what better way to draw attention than by pancaking a high profile guy) - would you?
as absurd as the op was, did rex really say that he had seen enough of what he wanted to see from coples and wanted to get other des more reps so he held coples out? i mean really did he actually say that? if he did he is a jackass. if he didnt the guy who posted it is a jackass.
just remember you said that when the kid isnt quite there in the first 4 weeks of the season and needs more reps to get used to the speed of hte game. all the talk of this guy needs more work that guy needs more work now its we dont want to get a guy hurt so we arent going to work him on the second day of rookie otas
I dont see why you say that? Coples was working on one on one drills so they could look closely at him - the guy is our 1st round pick so will be going to the OTAs etc obviously - Rex wanted to look at other guys on the fringe to see who is worth bringing along (plus he wanted to avoid Coples getting injured by throwing him in with a bunch of JAGs desperately trying to prove something).
there is a full offseason ahead of him - you really think a few reps with a bunch of UDFAs is going t make any difference to his performances?
This is so fucking stupid. He killed it yesterday, they gave him a drill off, whats there to talk about. This fanbase and people who write about this team are beyond overemotional.
my point is that everyone will be talking about how he needs more reps come week 4 when he isnt performing up to snuff. yet they take reps away from him on day 2. it just doesnt make any sense. like i said the op completely and totally over reacted, but to think that reps dont matter is absurd. or has rex ordained the poor kid already like he did with wilson on draft day a few years ago?
No wonder the media reports on this tabloid-esque crap. People immediately assume the worst & throw the entire organization under the bus. How bout waiting for the official word? Or realizing that all players are cycled in & out of drills in rookie Mini camp. It's about player reps..not driving into the ground what you already know. This couldn't be more of a non story..but go head guys. Have at it.Spin this into Jets disaster/Coples bust drama
LOL. Friggin Jets fans. Always so quick to point out anything that could even be slightly interpreted as negative without even reading the whole story. Just a tweet. What a joke. Why so desperate to make our coaching staff look bad?
The point is to see what guys are going to make it to camp, and to weed out tryouts/udfa/late draft picks. Im pretty sure the guy we drafted @ 16 is safe to make the team, and really doesn't need to be out there with walk ons
What's crazy is this is a ROOKIES 11 on 11 drill, not nfl ready players so reps don't help much. Also Rex needs to evaluate other rookies instead of focusing on the well scouted, well known rookies. I like Rex's thinking bcuz this is the only way to see of some of these rookies have a shot our not, and its better for the rookies to show what they got and stand out. This is a def a non story unless you want to show that Rex knows how to evaluate talent, and gives the rookies a fair shot.
