So here's why people think the pick was bad, in a nutshell:

    1. Quinton Coples is lazy.

In 2010 Quinton Coples had 10 sacks from DT and was an All-ACC selection. The Tarheels were under fire at that point with many starters suspended for the 2011 season. It would have been easy for Coples to take the path of least resistance and declare for the 2011 NFL draft. He'd have been a 1st round pick for sure. He might well have been a top 10 pick. He'd have made his score and walked away from the mess.

But despite not being at a championship contender he stayed. Despite the fact that his stock would likely never be higher given the other player losses around him he stayed.

Butch Davis moved him to DE for the 2011 season, away from the position he naturally excelled at, which was 3-technique tackle. He hit a learning curve outside that was due to tackles being better than guards, the fact that he saw a lot of double-teams and also the fact that he switched sides on the line. Despite that he still was an All-ACC selection. Only 2 UNC defensive linemen have been named All-ACC twice, Julius Peppers and Quinton Coples.

If he was lazy he'd just have grabbed the money in 2011 and walked away from a sinking ship. Instead he returned, changed positions to help the team which had lost a bunch of starters in the probes, and had a really good year while he was learning the new position. 7.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for a loss, 3 forced fumbles and 10 pressures.

If that's lazy sign me up.

    2. Quinton Coples isn't fully invested in football.

If Quinton Coples wasn't invested in football there is no way he goes back to play for UNC under the circumstances he played for them last year. He takes the easy money and starts over in the NFL. The only reason he goes back to UNC is because he wanted to play football for them. He already had his draft stock where it needed to be. He was last year's Michael Brockers if he came out. That he went back to play his senior season tells you that he likes football.

If Quinton Coples wasn't invested in football he doesn't thrive the way he has as UNC has moved him all over the place in their schemes. He has played LDE, LDT (3T) and RDE in the 4-3 over his 4 years at UNC. He has played LDE and RDE (5T) in the 3-4 looks. UNC has really given him a solid grounding in a defensive lineman's roles in both the 4-3 and the 3-4.

There was some talk last year near the end of the season about Coples resisting being moved back to LDT in the middle of the season. Some scouts say that he was not willing to make the move for the team. I have a slightly different take on it. Based on what we know about Coples I think he didn't want to move back inside, where he knew he was good and valuable, because he hadn't completely mastered RDE yet. If that's being not invested in football sign me up for it.

I think the Jets got a great pick on the 16.

On the left hand if he produces nothing then we have another VG on our hands. if, however he produces 30 sacks then we got ourselves a winner

^ Good breakdown, Br4d. I truly think that a lot of this laziness nonsense has been made up by the media from a few out-of-context quotes.

    3. Quinton Coples eats free coconut shrimp appetizers at parties without paying.

Now this is a serious character issue for which you will have no excuse. This guy is going to be a bust because no one in the NFL has ever achieved greatness crashing parties and stiffing party hostesses.

Yep there is not 1 of us that can say if he will be bust or a HOFer until the end of this season. So please stop all this other speculation about him until after game 16 of this years schedule. You certainly must remember all the positive speculation there was on this forum when VG was drafted by us

No none at all. Until he plays out this upcoming season he is just another #1 draft pick who may also be the next bust after VG

That's right. And Cimini rightfully brought up this serious charge in his article.

This is right up there with not tipping the men's room attendant. What's next? Checking out one of the flight crew's ass? We're talking about morality and character issues here.

That's all wonderful, but he stood up in front of his teammates and said "I'm not playing hard this year", and then didn't play hard. Yea, that's the guy I want on my team.

You got a link on that?

I find it hard to believe given that if he wasn't planning to play hard he just leaves for the NFL and a $12 million contract.

Big upside. Rex must have liked what he saw. I have to trust him at that. Ingram was way too small, and would only have played in pass rush situations. This guy could be the real deal.

Says he "wasn't ready to be a professional" after his junior year and didn't play up to his own standards (paraphrasing).

When asked if Rex got a good value he says "definitely." Says Jets fans are passionate about their team and he'll be motivated (when asked about his supposed motivational issues).

Very quiet sort of guy. Didn't commit to much. Polite, uses "no sir, yes maam."

Yeah that kinda threw me for a loop too.

If Rex can convince him he's humble than convincing him he's the second coming of Julius Peppers should be a snap :breakdance:
