I don't give a shit if other people are ok with the pick or not. If we would've drafted Ingram I wouldn't have bitched about the pick... with Coples I'm bitching about it. This whole "you can't criticize your teams' draft is bullshit"!
Second year in a row we took a DE in the first round..the team has other needs that are more pressing. If they are so sure this guy is the answer then cut DeVito and use his 3 mil to sign somebody else.
I cant believe people think they know more than the best defensive mind in the NFL. This obviously was REX's pick, and this guy turned us into a perennial elite defense in the company of the Ravens and Steelers, even though they have more overall talent on their defenses (where we just have Revis + Rex)
We had an elite D one year under Rex, his first year. Elite D and the Jets the last two years don't belong in the same sentence. Good and elite aren't the same thing.
The only way this pick makes sense is if Jets brass had Coples rated significantly higher than any other prospect on the board at the time. Defensive end and the d-line in general was the one area of the field that we were stacked at, depth-wise. We play a 3-4 and literally went 7 deep with quality players before this pick. So I feel as if Coples really has to be a game-changer to make this end up being a good pick. I felt like the best player on the board by a large margin also happened to fill a need on this team, and at one of the most crucial positions on the field to boot: David DeCastro. I think he was the best pick, the safest pick, and would have been guaranteed to have a huge impact on the Jets right away and for the foreseeable future. Given that we went DE, we still have GAPING holes at safety, wide receiver, and on the offensive line. We may be able to squeak by this year with our linebacking corp, but at the same time it would definitely behoove us to select one if there is a difference maker available when we pick. If not, that is most likely going to be the main focus in next year's draft. Going into day two, it would be great if we can pick up two quality players at: S, WR, OL, or LB.
Again with homerism, when did Rex become the "best" defensive mind in the NFL? Sheesh, give it a break. Coples was a suspect pick considering his lack of drive and questionable motivation. He has the mrasurables to be a beast, but if that lockeroom dips in morale, don't expect this kid to stick with the program if others start to slack.
This was pick 16 in a 1 pick sure thing draft. BAP on your board is what good teams do. That's what we did. It may not work out, it's still the right move.
Rex had every pass rusher available to him, and he chose Coples over everyone the fans think is better. No offense but I'm going to take the opinion of not only an expert on defense, but specifically an expert on D-line. The people that are pissed are just pissed because they want to see someone....anyone...with an OLB in front of his name, so they can equate that to seeing 15 sacks a year. You know how many pure OLB's were taken last night? ZERO. The closest thing was Irvin who's not even going to be on the field on first down. Every other OLB is still on the board, including Upshaw, so it's not just Rex's decision to pass on the edge guys, it was everybody's. Am I enamored with the pick? Hardly. In fact with what we had on the board I would have rather seen us take Reiff, but I'm not going to shit on Rex for pimping out our defensive front even more.
About five years ago he became one of the best defensive minds. Him and the team had a down year ago. You absolutely need to give Rex the benefit of the doubt...look what he did for Maybin. He gets the most out of his players
You being twice his age has nothing to do with being ignorant or not...I hate people who are pathetic enough to pull the age card (no offense).
I wasn't 100% sold on Ingram. Bottom line...Jets have upgraded there D-Line. Now, lets get more better in these later rounds.
If that is truly what he was thinking, then it's all the more reason not to like him. If he has those kind of thoughts in the pros, he's never going to make it. Just my two cents, and I fully agree that the guy does have the talent to be an elite player. The main reason I think it wasn't a good pick has more to do with all of the Jets needs, rather than the type of player he is. Also, I think he's a boom or bust type of prospect, and could be worth the risk, but I just don't know if now is the time to take that risk, again with all of the Jets needs and some good players still on the bored that were probably safer picks. Again, just my opinion.
gholston wasnt a product of Rex he never liked him. Coples i think can be a force no matter who we picked people would hate it.
For those that wanted Ingram, Manish just tweeted and said that if Coples wasn't there at 16, the Jets were going to select DeCastro. Ingram never appeared to be a serious consideration.
OMG HE'S DEFINITELY GOING TO BE A BUST!!! FO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL!!! SKY IS FALLING AHHHHHHHH! Get over it, people. Wait until training camp starts before slamming the guy.
Clearly not, but he's been around defensive lines for much of his coaching career and came up as a defensive line coach. I'm pretty sure that he'd have a pretty good idea of what it takes to make an impact in the league. Grow up dude!
Don't read waterfootball? You have maybe 3 respected guys saying he's gonna be drafted top 12. I could pick and choose from Fox, CBS, and SI and show you only Kirwan and Brugler with him in the top 12. You should also note whatMayock wrote with his guess that Coples would go at 12. Mind you, Coples was not that high on Mayocks actual ratings board (21). He's a boom-or-bust candidate. He had a big year as a junior at defensive tackle and got on everyone's radar. But to me, Coples is not a first-round pick off his senior year of tape, when he was playing defensive end. I recognize his talent, though.
