So there has been some buzz today about the Jets wanting to move up for Ingram, being that Rex sees a lot of Adalius Thomas in him. Great franchises let players fall to them, while still maintaining depth, Tanny does the opposite. This is getting very frustrating because it would at least take a 2nd to move into the top 10. I like Ingram, but he doesnt deserve a top 10 pick. Sigh. Per Steiny: Lot of people are saying the Jags will take Ingram. However @evansilva is reporting they don't have interest in him. Just trying to scare NY Word from around the league is that the #Jets might be willing to trade up to get South Carolina LB Melvin Ingram. #nyj That rumor could have legs. SI's Tony Pauline is reporting that the #Jets aren't likely to select Courtney Upshaw even if he's there at #16. @evansilva points out what I've been saying. Rex sees Adalius Thomas in Ingram. I'm telling you..#Jets interest in @MelvinIngram is REAL! It will cost a lot to get into the top 10. But, if the #Jets are serious about Ingram and he's there guy, you can bet they'll make a trade. Panthers at number 9. RT @Willhydes: @Steiny31 who's the most likely trade partner if they want to move up for Ingram??
Having Ingram on the Jets would be a good thing, moving up for him is a terrible idea and too expensive.
Everything Steiny said is completely obvious based on Tanny's history. If the Jets love a prospect, they find a way to move up and get him. It's the way its been Tanny's entire tenure. However, hopefully cooler heads prevail, it would cost essentially our entire draft (1,2,3) in order to go get Ingram. He is not worth that. We can't come out of this draft with Ingram and a bunch of late round developmental guys. We have needs that require our draft picks. Essentially we would be saying, we are one player away, and that Ingram would make our defense so good, nothing else would matter. It's a bad plan IMO. Especially since we don't have a #2 wr, a second safety, or a trustworthy RT, blowing our load on a pass rusher is a bad idea.
To be honest, I would hate the trade up more than Barron (depending on who we ended up taking with the picks we saved). I love Ingram and would be happy to have him, but we need more than just Ingram to make ourselves a contender next year. Agreed on all counts. If Ingram is around at 16, I will celebrate the selection. Trading up for him would hurt an awful lot.
Trading up for anyone in this draft is a horrible idea. I can't imagine any team the last 3 years has had less picks then the Jets and that's the last thing you want if your goal is to be competitive long term and have a chance to win a Superbowl every year. Everyone seems to love Ingram and I do think he's a great athlete and football player. The problem with Ingram is that: 1) His arms and torso are extremely small. 2) Rarely did he beat a tackle one on one in college. 3) Is he big enough to play the run in the NFL? Isn't the one thing the Jets badly need is a pass rusher who has the ability to beat a right or left tackle and put pressure on the opposing qb? It's great that Ingram lined up all over the field, but the reason he was lined up at defensive tackle was because he the opponent had much smaller arms and he was able to beat the guard or center and get pressure. I do not think that Ingram is going to have success going up against giants like Solder, Long and Vollmer. I do think if you had an established defense with a real pass rusher that adding Ingram would give a coordinator a lot of flexibility. Unfortunately, we do not have a pass rusher and if Ingram can't beat SEC tackles, how is he going to beat NFL Tackles?
Not if the trade up included our 1st and players instead of our 1st and additional draft picks. Panthers need a MLB and DTs. Dan Connor left in free agency and Thomas Davis has no knees. Bart Scott could man the middle for them, leaving Jon Beason at WLB and James Anderson at SLB. Scott would add some toughness to a notoriously soft front 7. At DT we have untouchables Muhammed Wilkerson and Sione Pouha, but everyone else could be moved. Maybe Ron Rivera likes Ropati Pitoitua as DT competition/depth and gives them flexibility to run 3-4 looks. Jets give: #16 overall pick, ILB Bart Scott, DT Ropati Pitoitua Panthers give: #9 overall pick This would allow the Panthers to take a WR at #16 or they could add another DT like Brockers or Cox at a better value than at #9. Jets could also give RB Bilal Powell since they could use depth after trading Goodson and Stewart is in his last contract year.

I wouldn't be stunned if we moved up, but all of the talk on Melvin Ingram may have been intentional to distract interested teams from who we're really looking at. WR Justin Blackmon (if he falls) & Michael Floyd are unlikely to make it to our #16 pick. OT Riley Reiff & Jonathan Martin are unlikely to make it to our #16 pick. S Mark Barron is at this point unlikely to make it past Dallas and to our #16 pick. The most interesting smoke screen would be for Dont'a Hightower. It's come out recently that the Seahawks who pick at #12 are very high on Hightower. The Pats were questioned when they took Jerod Mayo that high but things worked out very nicely for them -- Hightower could be a similar riser. And everyone knows we like Hightower, so the interest in Ingram and reported comparisons to Adalius Thomas could be planted for this reason.
This would never happen. Too trade up wed have to give up at the least a second and a 4th, no way in hell would Scott and Ropati be worth that. Combined wed be lucky if they both amounted to a 4th rounder.
I think the Panthers would rather take a DT at #16 and add Bart Scott and Ropati than reach for the same DT at #9. Most mocks have them taking Poe, Brockers, or Cox. They can likely get their guy at #16. Remember when we traded our 1st, 2nd, and garbage players for a Top 5 pick...and people said there was no way in hell, even if it froze over, that we could make that trade. This present significantly more value than that trade with the Browns a few years back. If we have to throw in a 4th that's fine, but I doubt we have to give our 1st and 2nd to the Panthers considering what they're targeting in the draft.
Bart Scott has zero value to another team. The Jets would have to give up a lot more(draft picks). I like Ingram, but he's overvalued in the top ten. I'd pass!!
It matters what we would give up and how sure our coaching staff is on him as a prospect..with the amount of pass rushers in the draft it would be questionable to give up a lot --Tanny moved up for revis ..he was right.. he moved up for Harris..he was right..if he can do it and not give up the farm I would be fine with it...he better be right though.
I pretty much agree with everything being said here. I just dont see how we can afford to do this. We have at least 4 holes that need to be addressed, and if we come out of this draft filling only one of those needs along with a few players that would be lucky to even make this team, then we are in some deep shit. I know trading down isnt Tanny’s MO, but holy shit, just do it if its sensible. IMO Hightower, Lamar Miller, Tru Johnson and Brian Quick in the 1st 3 rounds would be a shit ton better than just Melvin Ingram. Who knows, maybe Tanny can trade rape them like he’s done in the past, but we need to fill multiple holes in this draft.
Eh. Then all over the league he would be overrated. I think the consensus here is that Ingram would be great at 16, but not even close to being worth what we would have to give up to trade into the top 10. I dont think that thought process is wrong... If some team wants to reach on him in the top 10, let them. I just dont want that team to be us.
Can we for once just sit tight and take the BPA at our spot? Or even better, trade down and rack up picks like NE does.
