Participating in Free Agency is in essence to overpay. We did it with Bart, we did it with Pace. Would you rather give a very high pricetag to Nelson, who would likely produce, or a very high pricetag to Landry, whose left biceps will be laying in the endzone after a big hit in week 4?
Two sides of Nelson. If we get the 2010-2011 Nelson, great signing. Nelson was a pretty good Bengal for the most part. Seemed he did well under Mike Zimmer who knew what to do with him. If we get the Jacksonville Reggie Nelson, than he's going to make us pull our hair out with missed tackles, over pursuing and slow coverage.
He was a difference maker last year for the Bengals. Definitely played solid. I wouldn't mind this move at all.
Haven't watched much Jags or Bengals games over the years, but I've read that Nelson is a timid safety similar to a Kerry Rhodes. True?

Alas, you're a hard man to hate forever. $5M? Well worth it. However if he does sign with the Jets it will likely mean that he's willing to accept a more backloaded deal to play in a place where he thinks he's really going to excel on the field, which I'm sure he must. Just because he could very easily sign for a big up front deal doesn't mean that he'll be unwilling to sign with us for a more backloaded deal should he choose to come here. I guess the point is that we should be just as willing to overpay for a guy we need tomorrow as other teams are willing to overpay for him today. As a matter of fact I would say that hiring a quality starter in position of greatest need is one of the most effective strategies that a team can exercise during FA. It's essentially the type of situation that FA exists to facilitate. Let's facilitate.

2 quality starters at safety from FA is definitely overkill. If we got Nelson there are plenty of hitters that we can find in round 2/3 of the draft to come in and try to start beside him. That pick should only develop as the season wears on, and we can sign a clone of the rookie for a 1M type contract (decent backup money) to make sure there isn't a big weakness at any point for either safety position. Plus we'd essentially be switching from Eric Smith to a rd 2/3 pick AND a promising up and coming FA for free once we cut his black ass. That would be like dream scenario for me.

I know what you're saying but to be entirely honest I was kind of thinking to myself that we might better trade Lowery while we could get a little value for him last year especially once Maybin showed some flashes in the preseason to make me think that we could use Lowery's roster spot too. Of course about a week later that's exactly what Tanny did and I had mixed feelings about it at the time but definitely saw the merits of it even beforehand. Of course I'm going to get called a homer again probably but I felt that way before the trade happened and it would be hypocritical not to stick with that now that it doesn't look so hot. I think the idea was that we didn't really want Lowery as a long term answer, and he was probably going to command a pretty reasonable contract when he hit FA this year. Obviously not 13.6M big when he hadn't produced much but still he wouldn't have been looking that attractive to us. Better to go look to FA to get someone you really want like a Nelson and then use the draft pick you get for Lowery as a downpayment on a safety that you can start fresh on in the draft.
Leonard has been a leader and a mainstay on the defense and is still very capable of stopping the run. Coming off 2 terrible injuries he will probably draw very little interest from any other teams and should be a very cap friendly stop gap. And you guys need to cut Eric Smith a break. Last season was obviously a mistake to make him a starter, but as the third safety he is extremely versatile. He knows the system and is pretty much the leader on special teams. And he also has the unspoken position of team enforcer/goon. We need him for our dirty work. :lol: Not sure who Reggie Nelson is but apparently he's the best FA for safety according to you guys. Hopefully we are able to afford him. He sounds like the rangy, fast, type of safety that we are looking for. We basically had 2 strong safeties last year. As for Brodney Pool... Lowery helped the Jets immensely by taking this deal. He essentially screwed this entire safety class by setting the market so low. Now Nelson deserves alittle more change than 3.4 a year but anything below 5m/yr can be negotiated for sure w/ 5-6 M guaranteed .Big time bargain. Nelson IS a one year wonder, but a change in location to Cincy seemed to do wonders for him.Much like the move for Lowery to Jax was so helpful for his career. Jags are primarily a zone oriented defense. That fits Lowery perfectly. Conversely Nelson fared much better in Mike Zimmer's pressure based mix it up coverage D. He has very good physical tools..but doesn't have perfect footwork or discipline( Those are 2 essentials for Jax scheme). What he can do is tackle,flips his hips & has good recovery speed.All things the Jets need at the safety position in Rex's scheme.
