He is a lock through 2013. He has 2 more years to prove himself before we can cut him without shooting ourselves in the foot.
I wonder what Revis will ask for after seeing this type of treatment given to an underachieving quarterback. If Mark does not improve his play over the next few years, expect star players on the team that want to win a championship to leave for greener pastures. I.e Mangold, Revis and then whomever afterwards.
to bring a little humor to the conversation, because it definitely needs it... a friend of mine posted this on facebook, i th0ught it was quite hilarious. prediction: at least half of Mark Sanchez's 40.5 mil extension money will eventually be spent on skinny jeans and Smirnoff Ice.
And they went out and showed how used to your premise they are by trashing him in the media and saying how pampered he is and begging for a new qb. Even Tomlinson a respected vet said he was coddled. Sorry buddy but it doesn't work that way. You've got to earn it.
I expressed my reservations earlier about the extending of Mark contract, cap saving aside (yes it is a good thing) and the fact that we can cut him in two years without too many ramifications, another good thing. So all in all it was a fair deal for both sides, and really cost the Jets less then three million to get this done. Yet, here is the rub and it something that others mentioned and I think the issue that most concerns those who feel Mark my not be the answer. It is the lack of competition and because of this contract, the need to bring in no one to push or have the ability to take Mark's starting role away from him. After all you don't pay a guy 10 million to warm the pine, even if the other guy clearly out plays him. Now having said that and assuming Mark will be the starter at least for the 2012 season, ask yourselves this. Was the blueprint not layed out last season on how you beat not the Jets but Mark Sanchez ? This is what as a fan am most afraid of. So unless Mark can overcome the issues he had last season defenses will stack the box against the run cover the underneath game and come after Mark with everything they have and wait for him to panic.. Please don't try and tell me it was all the Oline fault either, because while there were problems in this area, there were also opportunities which Mark seem for the most part not to be able to take advantage of . I am hoping under the new offensive system that things will be easier for Mark, yet, if we see the same mistakes being made as we did this past year with the defenses rattling Mark, then the flaws are fundamental and I would have to say unchangeable. If this happens, which honestly I hope will not be the case, I hope all who think Mark is the answer long term for the Jets will not start the argument of , "he needs more time in the new system to grow. Mark must overcome these flaws this years or the Jets must move on...
What opportunities? You mean all those times holmes and burress where open beating their coverage? Lol, there is a reason Keller was our best receiver. Did you know our TE and our #2 back had more total receptions and only had 2 less receiving yard than our #1 and #2 receivers? Our WRs sucked between the 20's, that is fact.
Oh really? And you consider yourself an expert because you think it's as simple as the qb should earn the most?? Give me a break. Salary cap relief? Yeah we all get it. We saved 6 or 7 million short term. The point is this qb should not be getting 10-12 million a year. If they are extending him it should've been for a lot less. Has he outperformed his rookie deal in today's market? I don't think so. The whole league is laughing at us. And they are right. Right now he's in the bottom third of the league as far as qb play goes and we just paid him like he's the 6th or 7th best in the league. Don't you have a problem with that?
if the jets cut sanchez, the pats would grab him in less than 1 second, sit him behind brady for 2-3 yrs, then unleash him on the jets for the next 5-10 yrs.
Exactly. We drafted him 5th overall on the old system, where high picks make a lot of money. He has no reason to take a pay cut, the Jets need him. The Jets are gambling that he'll take a step forward, in which case, we save money this year, and we save money from 2014-2016 since he would probably have made more if we waited for him to have a big year this year or next.
Here come the media spins.... Article is what I've been saying. Once the details of Sanchez' deal got released, these media hounds are starting to look foolish. The deal was a brilliant stroke by Tanny. For $2.75M in additional guaranteed money over 3 years, he bought himself $6.4M in immediate cap space. And Sanchez is no bigger threat to hamper us in the future as he was before. In fact the team has rolling options every year starting in 2013, which is ideal timing since by then Sanchez would have his 5-year window behind him to demonstrate his long term viability or not. The move HAD to be done now for the team to benefit from the cap space (Sanchez' contract had the most to offer) before the free agency period kicks in on tuesday. Well done Tanny. Put aside ignorant fans (they simply don't bother reading details) and blowhard journalists (come on down Stephen A.) and focus on the fact the team can now actually begin to fill key holes that need addressing. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/e...sion-not-quite-as-large-as-previously-thought
It isn't as great as you make out either though, they saved money this year at the expense of next year, and additionally eliminated the possibility of cutting Sanchez after the upcoming season and owing him only 2M against the cap. It had to be done because our cap was fucked this year, but it isn't all great either. He gambled an extra year on Sanchez essentially, far from brilliant, but neither was it stupid like S.A.S and others suggested.
http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/39922/sanchezs-2011-struggles-under-microscope While I'm not sold on Sanchez anymore, and this article explains some of my qualms about him, I think he can be serviceable this year under Sparano's system. I don't think we're going to see a huge jump in quality though. Anyway, I'm glad they've made this move, we needed to clear up cap space. Not only do we owe him a lot less, we also aren't mortgaging our future on getting Peyton. Pretty good shit if you ask me.
There is no hole at QB. If Peyton Manning wanted to come here and still had a few years left--in which case the Colts probably would have kept him--then I could see making that move. Short of that, tell me who you bring in that puts us in a better position to win and has more upside. Realistically someone we could get, I don't need the list of top ten QBs who are not going to be available until their mid 30s.
I am nervously excited about this restructure. Yes, I agree, based on stats he's being overpaid, but the fact is this team is still in the "win now or never" phase and the extra cap room should allow the jets to surround Sanchez with solid contributors thus, putting the team in a better place to win NOW. With that said I hope the front office uses this money wisley (I believe this just the beginning and additional money will be availbe as the offseason progresses) and add players who bring some speed and energy to this team. Although the deal does raise "coddling" flag one positive I take from the FO backing him is the pressure to preform now more than ever will motivate Sanchez in turn increasing his confidence in the locker room as a leader and our starting QB on Sunday's. And if this does turn out to be a failure the Raiders will probably pick up the remainder of the contract and throw us some draft picks for him in 2013 lol.
With respect, how many passes did you see Mark throw at the feet of, to the left or right of, off the helment of his receiver last year ? An yes, Keller was open many times, and Mark failed to make the play.
