"According to Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post, sources close to Manning say that he has no interest in playing in cold weather."

" New York Jets have actually been in contact with Manning's representatives."

"The Chiefs, Redskins, Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, Cardinals and Broncos were among teams to reach out at first, according to sources."

So you don't find it interesting that once Manning chose his teams to visit, two teams that were kind of by not really in the running of Manning made QB related deals (WAS and NYJ).

That all experts and sources says it will come down to the 3 teams.

That multiple sources, including Jets beat writers, said the Jets were out of running for Manning on Friday afternoon/evening?

So you chose to ignore everything and are going with what sources that Manning would have come here?

Oh and theres this that the previous poster just found and posted: ESPN New York's Rich Cimini confirms that "from all indications," the Jets are out of the hunt for free agent Peyton Manning. The Manning camp quickly sent out word that he has no interest in playing for the Jets or the Redskins. Cimini confirms that the Broncos, Cardinals, and Dolphins are left standing as the odds-on three favorites to sign Peyton Manning.

So whats the next step that Manning said no? What would you have done with our limited cap space and multiple holes on the team?

Steven A Smith is outrageous. Regardless of what your opinion of this signing is, he borders on ass-stomping with the things that he writes.

    just a taste:

"Congratulations, New York Jets. Your future is set. You have your quarterback, and all the baggage that comes with him. Good luck on thinking it'll get you somewhere. To places only the Giants can speak about in this football town, that is."

Must be nice and safe hiding behind a type-writer.

Well since you already know that this team is destined to go nowhere next year and Sanchez is going to be the worst QB in the league then DON'T WATCH THE FUCKING GAMES. Peyton Manning was never going to be a Jet in the first place. Get over it.

Stephen A Smith is best at basketball, and by best I mean breaking news. He has good sources, but his actually articles and points are just made to rile people up. I still don't understand why nobody reads the actually details and the Jets are ONLY locked in for 2 years! 2 years is certainly sealing our future

    TOTALLY AGREE!

There was no replacing Manning. Bailing on a top 5 pick to go after a 36-year old QB coming off missing a whole season with neck surgery, learning a brand new system was ridiculous. And Manning was never going to come here anyway!

Sanchez getting an extension reaffirms him as the man. It's an aggressive move, but while it is risky, it does have a high reward. If Sanchez becomes the QB the Jets say he's going to be (and paying him while his value is low indicates they have faith he will), then he'll be underpaid for a few years and we won't have to worry about Sanchez.

Now, if he regresses this year, we'll have an issue. I was of the belief he deserves one more year, unless he's playing like the worst QB in the NFL. And contrary to popular belief, he won't.

If he struggles this year, then we have just one more year of guaranteed money. If he doesn't struggle, as Manish says on his blog, we can trade him and possibly get something back. A team could restructure his deal, there isn't a ton of guaranteed money on the back end. Even if it's just a 4th round pick like Campbell got for Washington, there's some value in a young guy with starting experience, particularly in the playoffs.

I bet they would prefer we had Henne or Campbell or some 3rd round rookie to Sanchez as those were the only other viable alternatives.

that guy is on tv, radio and writes. he's hardly hiding. he's just trying to stir things up and it works.

yep. there's a reason it's always him vs. skip bayless. they have the same forum troll style.

i'm not a huge sanchez supporter, but i think the positive of clearing cap space outweighs the negative of guaranteeing he's the starter for next year.

i don't follow college football so i don't know who's going to be available next year to draft, but it doesn't look like there are too many options on the fa market next year. schaub and flacco being the only 2 clear cut starters.

so really, there aren't too many options until it's crystal clear sanchez is not the right guy for the job.

i think both tanny and rex realize that they're all in the same boat. if sanchez goes down, he's taking them along for the ride. so it's also in their best interest.

Everyone is laughing their asses off about this extension around the league. The media loves to pile on this team.

Well, for most people, when you under-perform at work you don't get additional job security.

I'm amazed by the ignorance of some media and fans

    This was a glorified restructure.
D'Brick did the same thing weeks ago.

The press conference was to prop Sanchez up after the Peyton flirtation.
Players do these re-deals all the time.

And this one saved $6.4M in cap space, which was the key!

We don't have a longterm costly obligation after 2013. Which gives Sanchez the 5 year window he needs to demonstrate he is a star QB or just average.
No improvement and we move on without a long term obligation payment.

Stephen A. Smith wrote the dumbest article I've ever read on ESPN.
How does he have a job? Hw didn;t even factor in there were running option years, it saved cap space, and quoted incorrect statistics. Awful job.

This was a great cap saving move and gives the team approximately $15M right before free agency kicks off. Which is why they had to do this move now! And sportswriters are asking why did they have to do it now?!

Because otherwise they have much less to spend on other positions!!
I can't believe how ignorant some writers are.
Opposing fans I get. They don't bother with the mechanics of another team.

But the media should be forced to do their homework before making themselves look foolish.

Keep in mind that these sports reporters only make money if they attract readers/ratings. They easiest way to do this is with negative reports. Its been a fox news staple for years and has entered otehr types of media reporting. These guys make a lot fo moeny to act like dicks.

Yeah like others have said, the writers just write for attention. This extension is very cap friendly for the Jets, Stephen A Smith either chose to ignore that or didn't do his homework.
