Trading up took alot of courage. Their are deal makers like Shanahan and Mike T and their breakers like Holmgren. No guts, no glory.
:deadskins: hehe, I just had to use that one. Its a huge price to pay. The worry now is do you end up with a top notch QB and no talent around him? Becasue they are not drafting in the first for a long, long time. They better hope they can find very good talent in rond 2-4 over the next few years. The move I love is the Rams. This reaks of dallas moving Herschel Walker. A rebuilding team with a good young QB loading up on draft picks to put the talent around him to succeed. If they make good picks they could become a very good team for a very long time.
yuuup - not quite as good as the Walker trade but getting having 2 first round picks for the next 2 years as well as an early 1st and 2 early 2nds this year is HUGE for building a franchise. And if RGIII doesn't come in and immediately play like a solid NFL QB those draft picks could be quite good. The Rams just hit the lottery.
The Skins obviously think the move is going to give them cap relief over the next few years and let them be huge players in the FA market. They're going to have their franchise QB cheap and no 1st round picks to sign until 2015. That should give them the ability to spend in ways that Dan Snyder approves of. I don't think it is a winning strategy but it is certainly consistent with what Snyder has done over his tenure with the team: de-emphasize the draft in favor of the free agent circus.
The Skins overpaid bigtime. Three firsts and three second rounders is a huge price to move up four lousy spots in the draft. The new CBA even makes all of those first rounders a better deal against the cap than they used to be. If RGIII is the next Ryan Leaf the Skins will continue to suck for a long time. I really like what the Rams did for themselves here. Maybe they will move down further tp accumulate even more picks.
Holy shit - it was THREE 2nd rounders too? WOW I didn't even realize that. They really did get a Walker deal. edit: where are you seeing they got 3 second rounders too? I can't find that.
If RGIII becomes a franchise QB then the Skins broke even on the deal. They'll have to hit the FA market heavily to get on a Super Bowl run but that's Dan Snyder's MO anyway he'll just have a franchise QB now which is one of the hardest pieces to get. If RGIII becomes a good QB but not a great one then the Skins lost on the deal and they'll still be treadmilling in 4 years as they get back into the draft and try to create a real window for a Super Bowl. If he busts they're going to be the deadskins and not just for a year or two.
Seems like the Skins paid a very high price. We traded into the top 5 to get Sanchez for the price of our first and second round selections and three players, Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam and Brett Ratliff To get into the top 5 to get RGIII has cost the Skins 3 first round picks (at least one very high at #6) and a 2nd round pick. If RGIII does the business then they wont complain but it still seems a high price to pay. Yes, I know there wasnt the same competition for Sanchez as for RG3 etc etc and the market sets the price etc etc it doesnt get away from the fact that its a high price. edit: and yes, I realise #2 costs more than #5
However you feel about the draft chart, the Skins overpaid big time. Great move for an organization like the Rams, with talent issues across the board. They'll get difference makers. -X-

Trading up today cost more because the $ amount for the player is not as great. That's part of the reason the cost is prohibitive. I give them alot of credit. Most teams don't have the guts to do the deal.
Good move/bad move can be debated for Washington. No one can question the fact that the Rams made a FANTASTIC deal in every way. What a deal for rebuilding that franchise.
Pretty awful trade by Washington. Griffin better be a franchise QB considering what they gave up. Even then, I'd be liking the trade from St. Louis's perspective. Yep. This trade has pretty much no upside for Washington and is a fantastic trade for St. Louis.
It is interesting how this deal will end up putting almost as much pressure on RGIII as the #2 pick, as there will be on Luck as #1 and Mannings successor.
Just because I don't like the Skins, I hope RG3 busts. St.Louis should trade down again and get even more picks. More picks, more players, more talent, better chance of success, better team.
