I can agree with a lot of this. I don't think the Jets were an elite defense this past season, but they were pretty darn good. They were 5th in yards, but they were top 5 in a ton of other categories like 3rd down conversion, etc. (when I get more time I'll list them out here) Jax played pretty well on defense all year if you watched them. You don't need elite talent everywhere on D to be a good defense. Let's be fair on the Giants, they did play pretty lousy on defense all year mainly due to injury. They finished the season 9-7, a mere one game better than us, and got hot at the right time (injury free in the post season).
we have as good a shot to win it w/ Sanchez as we would w/ Peyton and a better shot in Janaury to beat the Pats again. You are looking at yards, look at points.
I think we'd have a better a shot at winning the division and getting a bye with Peyton but in the postseason I think our chances at making would be just as good with Sanchez. I say this because we're not making the playoffs with shitty play from Sanchez so if we made it he must have progressed in some way. About our defense, I think our defense was a bit above average but we struggled against the run. Our pass defense was one of the better ones in the league I believe (don't have numbers in front of me but I think one of those higher level stat sites has us graded as the #2 pass defense in the league...may be wrong on that).
saw this too!! He has to go to miami then maybe jets, broncos, or chiefs. Even though I think NFC teams need/want him more!!
You don't win 12-14 games a season, and 23 straight at one point without being fine in the cold. He hasn't been the post season QB that he has in the reg season but he often had dome-field advantage there. I don't think it's weather, and I don't think a competitor like Peyton is going to shy away from any potential schedules. He's coming back because he thinks he can play and he wants to prove to everyone else. I think the biggest factor is the likelihood of winning. That's what drives him. I'm not going to pretend I know the cap situations of these teams but: I think that he might be lured into playing in the AFCS. Don't forget he is familiar with western Tenn. Texans are seemingly loaded. Jacksonville would look a lot different with top 5 QB OAT and whoever their #1 DP is. KC went to the playoffs in '10, will have Eric Berry back, and a new regime that won't get in the way of Peyton's on-field OC capabilities. Pretty easy division. I don't think he goes to Washington, lack of talent, stubborn HC, Eli x 2 Like I said, I don't think Manning will shy away from competition. Miami is likely. I can't see Balt or Dal, but who knows. AZ I could see potentially. Seattle doesn't have a dome and I don't know why he would go there unless they are bringing in all his buddies. I guess they did just recently make it to the playoffs, but I attribute that to "someone's gotta go" before the emergence of the 9ers.
I think if you look around the league, there really are not that many top shelf D's if by that you mean in historical terms. It's partly changes to the rules, but scores and yardage, particularly in the passing game, is up. Meanwhile you can't help noticing how fundamentals like tackling seem to be suffering. Perhaps that's a result of all the rules designed to improve protection of vulnerable offensive players. But we are talking right now. Not what teams would be elite in some kind of all time comparison. Right now, think of what teams have noticeably strong D's. The Ravens, Steelers certainly. San Fran is up and coming, and goes into the top five. Texas was impressive this past year, too. Who else? Maybe only those four teams have "elite" D's right now. But by any reasonable measure, the Jets, even the 2011 Jets, are right below them. Who else would be besides the Jets?
This is a very unhelpful and off the point post. In comparing defenses, it doesn't matter if a particular team's defense does not lead to many losses since their O is way above average. This should be obvious. Stop trying to ruin discussions here just because they don't give you an obvious opening to talk about how great your team is.
He very rarley plays in the cold ad hasn't played well in the cold in January. In that long win streak he played ONE cold weather game- a 10-6 win at the awful Cleveland Browns in 2008 where he led his O to 3 pts and the Colts D scored the other 7.
If peyton is healthy and knows the system but we have to assume he's going to have a little rust plus he'll be in a new system for the first time in forever so I'm not sure he'd lead us to more reg season wins and I know I wouldn't be confident in him in January.
Good point. In comparing regular season stats, the situation of a team like the Giants, who basically barely made it to the playoffs, and then played very well, hardly means they were great over the course of the regular season. Theirs was a very atypical season.
None of the defensive units are elite, and none of them interact and compensate for weaknesses of the other units very well. The defense is a sum of its parts. We are not an elite defense by any era's measure, but it is the strength of our team. It being the strength, yes, they are more often than not the major reason we are competitive in action. However, they are not without fault in most games. It takes a well thought-out game plan executed well by all 3 phases of the game to win the majority of games in the NFL. We probably aren't getting Peyton and I don't want it to happen, but he would put the defense in a position to succeed more often than Sanchez did last season. That was last season though, our QB is still growing and has a blank slate in front of him to write his history.
Junc where do you get these cold weather stats? I have to doubt that probably one of about three times Manning has failed to throw a touchdown in his career is typical of his performance in the cold. He's not as good in the cold, I think few can say they are.
Ftr I did not say here that hte Jet D is elite. I questioned a post that said the Jet D is FAR FROM ELITE. And then I disembowled BrowningNagle for claiming the Jet D lost five, even six games, themselves this past season. Including the Giant game. Heh. The Jet D was primarily responsible for only one loss, and that was the Oakland game. A discussion of the Jet D might at this point seem not so clearly related to the question of what team Manning might want to go to, but of course it is very relevant, if we can presume he wold prefer to be backed up by a quality (if not ELITE) D. Ravens and Steelers are out. After them, he very well might find Houston attractive. SF? After those teams, who can he look at and say they have a much better D than the Jets? I can't think of anyone.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/ it has game time weather for each game, they rarely play cold weather games. he has always had the benefit of playing more than half his games in domes.
