How many wide receivers are on his stratosphere? What WR in this draft do u believe to be better than Wallace that we can get at 16? Again we can not afford him, but to think a young proven talent is not worth 16 over some player who MIGHT be good is just not very logical.
He might be the best deep threat in the league which is something the jets desperately need. But i wouldn't call him top 5. His production slipped in the second half of the season.
Has anybody that has said anything even approaching indifference towards the absurdity of this idea ever taken an introductory economics class? Hell, if not, has anyone seen Moneyball? Saw the poster for it? Know who Brad Pitt is? This is truly flabbergasting.
If I were the Ravens and Bengals (depending on which 1st rounder they gotta give up) id strongly strongly strongly consider it. Obviously the Ravens don't have as much cap space, and theyre kinda tight on the cap with Rice/Grubbs but when you have the chance to literally STEAL the biggest weapon from your biggest divisional rival, thats something you gotta think strongly about. Not to mention their only legit wr is gonna be 33 this season and is somewhat of an injury risk. Hell imagine that Bengals offense if they trade up for Trich AND get Wallace+Green, thats some scary ass shit. As far as im concerned this would be like if we could get Gronk from the Pats, as bad as your cap situation is, its something you really gotta fucking think about
He started getting double teamed every play too. Thats why Antonio Brown started getting more catches
Brown actually averaged less catches after the bye than before it. But he was getting more favorable matchups so his YPC significantly went up
Says the guy who cosigned the idea of bringing in Branch and Griffin.... We all understand he cant fit into the cap, at least most do, this conversation was mulling the idea of whether or not he is worth a first, if able to fit into the budget. Its just talk, not realism.
Branch made sense assuming the Raiders let him walk. This team desperately needs a real safety, and we have none on the roster (Eric Smith is not a real safety) However we already have one WR making 10m + a year so its not really comparable. Not to mention were entering a draft LOADED with wrs, and garbage for safeties. That said the idea of being in RG3 is absolutely fucking stupid
Tyvon could be making around 6-7 million per year and Griffen could be making about 4-5 million per year. Which means wed be paying both a combined 10-12 million per year, if not more. I obviously wouldnt be against bringing in one or both but we dont have the cap space, yet he complains that some in here are stupid and dont know about the cap space and Wallaces possible contract (my assumption from his post). Which obviously is hypocritical.
No you couldn't be more WRONG! That makes absolutely no sense. This is the perfect deal. Its a no Brainer. First we'd have to give up a pick mid way in first round. Who needs a chance to pick up a high end LB, one of the top DLmen, or possibly the best RB prospect since Adrian Peterson. I mean think about it. What makes more sense than to give up your top draft pick PLUS pay a max contract to a WR when you have a QB who is more efficient in a run first offense. I mean tying up around 18% of your total cap on 2 WRs when you are planning to be a "ground and pound offense is clearly a sound strategy. ESPECIALLY when the Jets have so little cap space to maneuver. I'm guessing that after the DBrick restructure that the Jets are $7-8MM under the cap. That's enough to sign your draft picks, and have the $2MM in reserve that most teams like to start the season for signing FAs when players go on IR. So all you'll need to do is clear another 8-10MM in cap space so you can fit Williams under the cap, and forget about signing anything but minimum wage FAs to fill any of the many holes the Jets have to. BUT who cares. All that matters is that the Jets now have talented WRs in the wrong offense with the wrong QB. Yup! as a decerning Pats fan. That's the way I think the Jets should go. BTW- Actually the Pats are probably in the best position to do sign Williams. 1. They have 2 picks in the first round and would "only be giving up the 31st pick. 2. They are well over $20MM under the cap. 3. His skills perfectly fit the need the Pats have at WR for a field stretching deep threat that would open up the middle of the field. But if the Pats re-sign Welker here's why the Pats would never do that deal. 1. The Pats would NEVER tie up 18% of their cap by have 2 WRs with max contracts 2. In the Pats offense the 2nd WR is usually the 4th option behind Welker, Gronk and Hernandez. You don't give up a #1 pick and a max contract to your #4 option. 3. The Pats already have the 2nd best passing attack in the league, and Brady threw for the 2nd highest passing yards in league HISTORY. Its not likely that he's going to throw for more even if he had Wallace. 4. Why give up those resources when you have one of the top offenses, and one of the worst defenses - However in the unlikely circumstance that Welker walks, the the Williams scenario makes a lot more sense.
Wallace is a classic burner. He's 6' and 200 lbs and he runs a 4.34 40. WR obviously is a position where straight line speed matters. He's 25 years old. He's on an ascending curve up into his prime. There probably is no better option for the Jets to find a field-stretching WR than going and getting Wallace. Ok, now here's the reality of the situation: 1. He's going to cost more than the Jets can afford, given Santonio Holmes contract, to acquire. The Steelers will match any offer that the Jets backload to make him affordable and the NFL has become very hostile to poison-pill type deals after the run of such deals in the late 90's to mid-2000's. 2. He's not Calvin Johnson. He's not Andre Johnson. He's not Larry Fitzgerald. If he did come to the Jets in a high profile signing or deal he'd be crucified by the media and fan base over time as this became apparent. He's a really good receiver but he's not a game-changing superstar and he probably never will be. He's not the physical specimen those guys are. To give you an idea: he's an inch taller (maybe) and about 7 lbs heavier than Santonio Holmes. 3. That 16 pick really needs to get spent somewhere in the trenches. The Jets are losing their edge at the line of scrimmage. They can't protect the QB all that well or dictate on the ground on offense and they can't get to the QB or manage the opposing running game unless they have one dimensional players in specifically to do those things. You need to be able to stop the run and pressure the QB without substituting in specialists to do those things. Otherwise you get caught at the end of the game with the wrong guys on the field and the other team not letting you change things up when you need to. You give a good QB too much information based on who is on the field against him and the Patriots beat the Jets by running the ball down their throats with 5 DB's stuck on the field alongside the pass-rush specialists. Would I like to have Mike Wallace on the Jets next year? Yeah I really would but I saw teams with Wesley Walker get crushed on a regular basis because the trenches were weak. No thanks.
this hits the nail right on the head, although wallace would give us a downfield threat. In terms of RFAs, I think the dream scenario is Arian Foster. IMO he is worth giving up a first round pick to lock up long term. The Texans might not be able or willing to match a serious offer, and he would immediately make our rushing and passing attacks better.
I think one HUGE HUGE HUGEEE issue people are missing with Wallace is this. The Rapist. When you have a mobile QB who can break tackles and keep the play alive for fricken EVER it opens up the deep ball and takes it to a whole new level. While Wallace is no doubt very talented, its worth noting that Holmes, Brown, Saunders, Ward all looked damn excellent in that offense. And I think when Wallace doesn't have a QB who can keep the ball alive all day, he goes from an elite deep threat, to just a pretty good wr. Which means whoever gives him a monster contract, is likely overpaying.
Throughout the entire history of NFL, the only RB who could sustain years of success behind porous OL was, one-and-only Barry Sanders - and he worked his butt off to get that.
Wallace is like a slightly taller, better, version of Holmes. We need a big target guy with some deep threat ability. Even if we could offer Wallace the money, I wouldn't feel comfortable with our tallest WR (of the top 3) being 6'0. Kerely and Holmes are small as is.
