Probably not so stupid if you are a comic book geek/Kevin Smith fan.

I watched the first 10 minutes, admittedly for TWD preview, but I got a few chuckles.

I am a Kevin Smith fan though -- I don't really like his movies too much, but I like him.

I still dont understand why they killed the dudes from Philly. If anything they would help kill zombies right? Didn't rick give that same speech at the CDC and to Hershel?

If you read enough of the comics you come to learn that the people still living are much more dangerous than the walkers. It looked like the guy behind the bar was about to pull a shotgun on Rick when Rick turned to fire on both guys.

Besides, looking at what Rick's group had to go through to go a relatively short distance the guys from Philadelphia had to be very tough and resourceful to make it as far as they did. There is no way Rick was going to introduce them to his wife and son unless he was 100% sure about them. They were both armed and very dangerous.

It just seemed stupid to kill 2 people who seemed to make it pretty far.

It seems early for Rick to be giving up on the rest of society and would rather blow them away then try to talk to them.

Dave was definitely going for his gun, before Rick shot him, so Rick was just protecting himself. That said, Rick was being a major dickhead.

Read the comics. People are more dangerous than walkers.

I read the comics. Nothing has happened in the show yet to have Rick be so defensive. Of all the people he met, only one, Merle, has been a jerk.

Rick doesn't realize that people are worse than zombies until they get to the jail when they are almost kicked out.

What has happened in the show for him to completely distrust other survivors?

the fact that those guys were going to gun him down, clearly Rick read them accurately from the get-go and is stand-offish to them because he can tell, like the rest of the viewing audience, that they weren't interested in taking refuge with them and were likely interested in killing them, just like they attempted to do.

    where is the confusion?

I don't get your confusion. By the way the scene unraveled, a 5 year old could understand that the two Philly guys were about to draw down on them. Fuck, the fat guy even yelled out that he'd shoot them in the heads and take their fucking farm. Do you really need a more obvious picture drawn for you?

    phubbadaman's postapocalyptic, albeit brief, experience:

Stranger: why don't you take us back to your camp so we can murder the men and rape the women.

phubbadaman: well, you really haven't done anything yet to make me wary of you, so, sure, this way...

But if Rick wasn't such a dick would they have acted that way???

From that scene I felt that Rick was the one that instigated the whole thing.

Obviously they drew on Rick and he made the right call, but perhaps if he had been friendly they wouldn't have drawn...

From the comics, Rick learned not to trust, and usually saw the best in people, but after shit that happened, he became hard core and didn't trust anyone.

From the show, he just looks like a murdering asshole.

^ They are barley allowed to stay on Herschels farm at the time, and Herschel was drunk and probably was scared too.

So Rick stepped up. If at the time Rick wasnt sure if he was still even able to stay on Herschels farm, why would he feel ok inviting some shady guys like those back to Herschels farm?

He wasnt instigating or being a dick at all.

the show couldn't have made it more blatantly clear that these guys were dangerous. the fact that you couldn't pick that up reveals more about you, not Rick's distrust. sorry.

do you honestly think those guys just arbitrarily decided they were going to kill Rick, despite their claims they needed his help, because he was being a dick? and then what, they were going to only kill Rick and then ask the other two to bring them to the camp that they still needed to get to?

killing Rick would have served no purpose, so clearly they had no purpose other than to kill him. and if they were willing to do it at the bar, what the hell do you think would have happened if he brought them to the farm?

    Dangerous?

The guy was reaching for the club soda sprayer thingy and got blown away.

Like in Death Wish when Charles Bronson shot first and thought second.

I guess I just have zombie brains. Wouldn't the show have been better if they brought them back to the farm, after Rick trusted and accepted them, and then they pulled a gun on his wife and THEN Rick blew them away.

Am I supposed to just buy that in the zombie apocalypse that people go around just murdering for fun?? Even the Governor had a purpose with all his insanity. These two just walked into the bar looking for a little murder?? Still don't buy it.

I think it is entirely plausible that random acts of violence can manifest in this sort of environment. You have a situation where there is a serious lack of resources and safe havens, and you have people who have found that their common man is not so charitable in the "everyone for themselves" zombie-universe. It is very easy to see how a conversation that moved along with the Philly guys ends with one party getting shot up.

Just goes to show that being naive, or willing to open your doors to anyone will get you killed eventually, and that even someone with expected high morals and conviction is going to have to recognize when to cross the line for self-preservation.

Plus... they were Eagles fans. Two in the chest, one in the head.

who said they were going around murdering for fun? they are surviving the world by preserving their own group.

if I was in the situation my primary interest would be the survival of my family and would kill to protect them. then any friends accumulated on the way.

conversely, it isn't out of the ordinary for people with less morals to simply only be interested in the survival of their immediate group at the expense of others. they aren't killing only to protect against a threat but will kill to obtain the resources others have that will benefit their survival. why is it hard to grasp that is the type of people those two guys are, especially considering that is exactly how it played out?

did Shane kill fatboy for fun? no, he killed him because the survival of someone he cared about was more important to him than the survival of a stranger, and that isn't something that is just unique to Shane.

Rick needed to make sure Hershell was safe because he needs Hershell to deliver his wife’s baby when the time comes. Rick is also looking out for his son and the rest of the camp of survivors he’s travelling with as their leader.

Remember also, that Rick is a cop, and he probably has a pretty good intuition about when people are lying to him or up to no good, and it was made pretty clear to the audience that the Eagles fans were not looking to play nice.

I think it was a step in the right direction for Rick’s character development. Shane shouldn’t be the only one capable of doing badass things, and so far in season 2 Rick has been a little too passive and diplomatic.
