Jil.amazingly that seems to be it. That is one of the few time periods that the models dont go from sunny with highs in the 80's to a blizzard. Pretty consistent but I havent checked it today...I will now.

Hmmm...real interesting. I would easily say thats the best setup this winter..not saying much but its a good one. Plenty of cold air in place (rare) getting moisture from the gulf of mexico (rare) those are the two combos for huge storms.

Now...will the northern and southern jet streams phase? Far away storm but its damn consistent.

Some of the great storms of the past all had one thing in common...models showed them more than a week before..different degrees...but showed them. This is well over 150 hours out.

I'm in Siena, Italy for some downtime; was planning to do some biking around southern Tuscany. Turns out to be the coldest week in 27 years. The city is covered with snow and ice; hundreds of people in the countryside with no electricity and below zero temperatures.

Hard to believe this is in that part of Italy. Wow.

Anyone who might need to learn how to stop while skiing could probably get some good practice there.

    from the article:
Germany recorded the coldest night of the year, with the thermometer plunging to -16 Fahrenheit (-27 Celsius) in the southern town of Oberstdorf, according to the German Weather Service.

The tough winter weather also has hit cities in southern Europe such as Rome, where snowfalls are rare.

On Saturday, the Italian capital woke up to its second snowfall in two days — four inches (10 centimeters) — and some residents used government-distributed shovels to clear piazzas.

Children, meanwhile, enjoyed another day off school.

Man...check out Eastern Europe too...could be why we are getting by so easily this winter. When one area is nice...another is paying for it:

Yeah, these cold snaps are deadly in the vodka-drinking countries. People drink till they pass out. If they're homeless or don't have friends to drag them home, they're at risk very often. The local authorities send out drunk wagons to pick them up, but they don't find all of them. Over a hundred people dead in the Ukraine in the last week.

Then again, nice warm weather leads to people drinking to excess on the beach, then drowning. Basically weather is bad for you. Male life expectancy in Russia/the Ukraine is around 60.

Snowed here today in York, PA totally by surprise. Temps not particularly cold, but snow nevertheless. There may be hope after all for one big one before Spring is sprung.

ur right C, the grass has grown more so this winter than in recent pasts. wonder how thats going to play with the effectiveness of the herbicides and fertilizers. have decided to do the weed thing myself instead of paying for the service.

If you can get your hands on it, Lebanon Pro Turf (same stuff used on most golf courses) is available at select nurseries. I buy a 4-step program @ $99 total, and you can't find an imperfection anywhere on the lawn. Consistently green, doesn't "green up" for a week like Scotts and then fade. Instead, it stays that way for the entire cycle. The guy next door pays $450 for a season's worth of lawn fertilization treatments, and I pay 1/4 of that. Guess whose lawn looks better? Not his!
