INDIANAPOLIS — The rebuilding of the relationship between Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes may begin with a weekend retreat.

Jets coach Rex Ryan told The Post last night he has spoken with both players and Holmes told him he’d like to get away for a weekend with Sanchez as the two try to fix their chemistry.

“It seemed like that was what Santonio was talking about,” said Ryan, who is at the Super Bowl to make some promotional appearances. “I don’t know if he’s reached out to Mark yet and done anything but that is what I believe to be true.”

    UPDATES FROM OUR JETS BLOG

A month after the 8-8 season ended in disaster in Miami for the Jets, Ryan said he feels like everything will be better in 2012. The relationship between his quarterback and receiver is first on that list.

“The first year they had good chemistry together,” Ryan said. “Whatever happened, happened, but we’ll learn from it. I’m confident because I think we have to be successful, they have to be successful together. I know one thing: They are both extremely competitive. There isn’t one person in this organization who feels good about where we finished. We can’t wait to get it done again. We’d love to be able to play tomorrow. We’ll see. I think the strength of our football team will be in how we feel about each other and all that, the chemistry that we’ve always built. I think that will be a strength and won’t be a weakness like it might have been perceived this year.”

Ryan just returned from a vacation in Hawaii. He said while he was there he took some time to reflect on what went wrong and what he needed to do to improve the chemistry on his team.

“I had a little pad of paper with me,” Ryan said. “On one side I put down things that I need to improve on after having time to be away from it a little bit. I put how I’m going to get it corrected on the other side. That’s the plan. Each year I try to do that. This year is obviously important. There’s a lot of things I can learn from this past season. I really can’t wait to get started.”

Super Bowl XLVI is a nightmare matchup for Ryan between his in-state rival, the Giants, and his division rival, the Patriots.

“I think it’s going to be an awesome game,” Ryan said. “The last two times these teams met it hasn’t been decided to the final minute of the game. I think it will be the same.”

    His prediction?

“I’m not going to make a prediction,” Ryan said. “If I make a prediction on one team and that team loses, I’ll be blamed for it.”

How absolutely pathetic this team has become since the season ended. Why don't they all just shut up and hide under their beds until camp.

I read the first line and I can't stop giggling. It's like the Jets have turned into a massive reality show. It can't last for long but it's finally gotten to the stage where it is no longer painful to watch and I just go get the popcorn when the next episode hits.

People are so jaded on here. Rex is trying to fix the problem, BFD. Would you rather he ignore it? Jesus Christ.

I think the reservations that many are expressing are that Rex would be able to fix this better if he did it behind closed doors instead of being a blabbermouth.

A BLAAAAAABBBERMOUTH, to quote Ralph Kramden.

What difference does it make? It's not like the retreat is going to be on TV.

By talking about the process the Jets are apparently using to close down the rift what Rex has actually done is to again push it into the forefront for people to speculate about.

If the Jets are really planning to have Sanchez and Holmes together on the team next season they should be burying this issue deeply and not re-examining it endlessly in the media.

Woody says he has having dinner with Rex and Sanchez. Rex says Sanchez and Holmes are going to go hold hands at a wekend retreat.

    What's next? Film at 11?

What matters is that Holmes and Sanchez actually do bury the hatchet. People talking about it isn't going to effect what happens in the locker room or on the field.

Did you think the NY media was actually go to just let it going and forget about it if the Jets didn't talk about it? They are probably the ones that brought it up in the first place, so Rex just gave them an honest answer.

I value your opinions and thoughts much more than most on here, but I think you're really off base on this one.

Every time the media asks a question they also plant a seed. The Jets should want this issue dead, dead, dead. Bringing it up when it is momentarily resting is an unforced error.

The way the Jets should want this thing next mentioned is when somebody asks Holmes or Sanchez what is going on in camp next summer and they nonchalantly say "Oh, that? That was way overblown." End of story.

What makes you think it was the Jets who brought it up and not the media? Do you think Rex called up the post and said "Hey guys, I've got a story for you!"?

Why not just have the weekend retreat privately. Then, if it works, after you've won the Superbowl next season, you can tell the media, "You know, Sanchez and Holmes went on a weekend retreat before the season started, and it was very effective."

Why say anything about it now? Before it even happens? It's like Rex is physically incapable of keeping his mouth shut.

Same thing with Woody. Earlier in week, he announced that he intends to sit down and have dinner with Mark Sanchez. And this is news? The owner of a business is going to have dinner with one of his highest paid and most important employees. That happens thousands of times every day, all over the world. I'm sure every coach in the league has dinner with his quarterback or will do so over the offseason. But, our guy has to go to the media with it beforehand.

It's actually kind of amusing to watch Woody and Rex float their little trial balloons in the press. Their insecurity and total bewilderment at how to address the situation is both entertaining and frightening at the same time.

Actually it says Rex was at the Super Bowl making promotional appearances. I'm sure he was asked about it. The unforced error was putting new stuff out there for the media to speculate about.

Now we'll have the "how did the retreat go" line of speculation on top of everything else.

he might as well have just said, "well Mark and Santonio are working on a rap song together to spell it all out for you guys next summer."

At least that would have been entertaining.

Rex doesn't know how to activate the filter between his brain and his mouth, this is certain. And he loves the sound of his own voice far too much. He lacks any sort of tact or cunning with the media.

rex talks. you should have gotten over this by now.

if they hadn't mentioned anything about sanchez/holmes.. people would be on the board still asking WHERE IS MARK?? HOW WILL THEY WORK TOGETHER NEXT YEAR??

now that we know, it's just more complaining.

Whoever thought of getting Rex to do Superbowl live shots for Verizon NFL Mobile should get an immediate bonus - and then be stripped nekkid and fired. Rex is like an ice cream truck at a kids' fair for the media around Indy, but unless you dress him up like a big cell phone and make his contract subject to him saying "Verizon NFL Mobile" every other sentence, I'm not sure anyone's going to know why he's there. You were the first one to point this out, but I heard Lupica say the same thing just yesterday - Rex just starts talking and keeps taking hoping that something really great comes out. It seldom does.

I admit to being jaded. But, mostly, although I'm really pleased they're trying to mend things, I just wish whatever dopey things they're trying would remain a private team matter.
