I think its too big a risk with manning considering no one knows the long term effects of this surgery since it is a newer procedure I'm going to throw a sleeper QB possibility, Drew Brees Ultimately I think the saints will get a deal done before free agency, but if they don't the franchise tag will not stop at least one team from pursuing him in my mind. My question is would you give up two first round picks to get brees considering you would probably have to pay him 21+mil? This would be a much better possible investment than Peyton. He would be 33 when the season starts.
he actually got paid over $16m this year still he is a bargain at only $14m next year and a complete steal at $8.5m in his final year.
Uhh yes LOL, but it will never happen. Drew Brees is the best QB possibly in the history of the game.
I don't think much of Mark, of course, but that did not seem enough to vote yes on this poll. I voted no since I don't think the Jets can put together what it would take to bring Manning to the team without doing things that even with a Qb of his caliber, even assuming he's totally healthy, would be capable of winning it all. And not winning it all, the team would be sadled with the holes left in it for some years after. It would not work and would cost too much, so I am opposed.
What I can't figure out is this. Manning is going to be 36 years old next season. He just had double neck surgery over a year long period in which he lost a season in the process. He hasn't been the great Peyton Manning since 2009, when he was 33 years old. He has never played home games outdoors in the northeast. The few times in his career that he has had to play games in January in the northeast the Colts have lost and lost badly. What exactly is it about him, other than that he is not Mark Sanchez, that everybody is hopping up and down about? If he comes to the Jets next season and assuming he doesn't get knocked off the field at some point he's most likely to give us a very pedestrian performance that gets worse in January in the cold. Does anybody really think that 36 year old Peyton Manning is going to miraculously beat Tom Brady in Gillette Stadium in January when the 28 year old version who had just thrown 49 TD passes and had a QB rating of 121 couldn't throw even 1 TD pass in the AFC division round in Foxboro in 2004? Really? Why don't we just go get Kim Kardashian to play QB? She's got about the same chance of beating the Pats at the end as Manning does? And think of all the PSL's she'd sell to the untapped NYC heiress market out there.
If the Fins get Manning, and the Pats have Brady, then uhm dont we completely control the afce once they both retire in a handful of years ?!
A tremendous post. Well said. Doesn't matter if he rarely gets hit. All it takes is one hit in the wrong area and it's goodbye, career. Not only that, Blocker but the RISK for re-injury is too great. I don't care if the Doctors give him the go-ahead. It's still a major Risk. And like you said...if the Jets don't win it all for the few years he'd be here for, then what? Then we'd have to start looking for a QB in the draft All over again..... Give me the QB that I know already.
I don't believe Mark Sanchez will ever be an elite quarterback, so yes I want Peyton. Mark's passes have no purpose or command, he plays scared, he has no control over the lockerroom, he isn't respected by the team, he isn't a leader, he makes boneheaded rookie mistakes routinely even in his 3rd year, he has shown me nothing that he can ever play to the level that we need him to to win a super bowl. I have never seen him have command of a game; ever.
The Jets have made it very clear that they will be a run first, ground and pound offense next year. Combine that with Rex's focus on providing a solid defense and they will look to have a ball control, time consuming offense. They will probably play low scoring, closely contested games. If they are able to run the ball the way they envision it, they are only asking Sanchez to be a game manager that doesn't make a big mistake and lose the game for them. He's already shown that he can be very effective in that role. If the run game is effective, he will be able to utilize play action where passing which appears to be one of his best strengths. You certainly don't need a Peyton Manning to run that type of offense. Now, if the Jets are unable to run the ball and the pressure to carry the offense falls on Sanchez, I have serious doubts.
Yeah, Peyton's a bum, forget him, and let him ride his motorized cart down to Miami. What we're hopping up and down about is having a quarterback with balls, who can actually take command of games and make plays. It won't be Brady vs. Manning, if Peyton comes here. It will be Peyton humiliating the Patriots sorry excuse for a defense while our defense just has to slow Brady down for 60 minutes, and we can certainly do more than that if we actually have a lead in these games. A pedestrian performance by Manning is better than the best performance Sanchez can ever give.
Manning won't go to Washington where he has to play his brother twice a year. All of the others are realistic landing spots.
Theoretically, Peyton Manning has the strongest neck of any QB in football. The weakness is between vertebrae, he's got those babies fused together. Not that it's comfortable. Some problems with the Favre comparison: 1. Favre was 39, Peyton is 36. Favre also had the best season of his career AFTER leaving the Jets. 2. It's not a negative. The offense was pretty good. Favre completed 65.7% of his passes even taking into account the numbers after he hurt his arm and the team collapsed. Injured Favre or Kellen Clemens were probably a wash. Remember, we were 8-3. 3. The 2011 Jets would probably be a playoff team with 2008 Favre. The 08 Jets scored 27 more points than we did this year. It's no coincidence Thomas Jones had his best year in 2008, pponents had to respect the arm. Favre did more with less: Cotchery-Coles-Rookie Keller-Stuckey < Holmes-Burress-4th Year Keller-Kerley 4. Peyton Manning is better than Brett Favre. --- That being said, I don't know where I stand on the issue personally. I think it would make our season damn interesting, and probably automatic Super Bowl favorites. But it definitely involves selling some potential future success to pay for the now. I think the Sparano signing says fairly loud and clear that we're not in the Peyton market. I want Sanchez to succeed, and I want him to get a shot in a new system, but Sparano's not going to teach Sanchez any new tricks. He's an O-line and running game kinda guy. Man I wish Norv Turner got canned.
I don't think he thinks you're nuts. I think he thinks you're distracted by the titties in your avatar. That's what he said.
Peyton Manning has done just fine against the Pats in the dome. He's done ok against them in Foxboro in the first half of the season. He's 6-9 lifetime through 2009 in games where the temperature at kickoff is below 40 degrees. If he's still playing in January for the Jets the odds are pretty good he's going to be playing at below 40 degrees, where he's never been good enough in the past and the neck situation isn't likely to improve those numbers. BTW, we've seen Peyton play in the Meadowlands in January. The Jets beat him 41-0 in 2002 with the temperature at 34 degrees at kickoff. Peyton went 14 for 31 for 137 yards and 2 Int's on that day.
And that's just it. What guarantee do we have that Peyton will be able to handle all that AND win a ring for the Jets? Answer : NONE. This could be a move that sets us back YEARS if we don't hit paydirt(Championship) and I'd rather not take that risk. If he was 100% Healthy with no Neck surgery issues, then of course. Then again, if he was 100% Healthy with no Neck-surgery issues, he wouldn't even be talked about as being available in the first place.....
