singletary, Mangini, Caldwell, mora, Haley, mcdaniels, spagnoulo, Morris, cable ... all gone.

we'll see if Philbin has what it takes.

It's remarkable how people seem to ignore this. Nowadays the odds are very much against a first-time coach having great success, especially with a team that isn't already stacked.

I believe your statement is slightly off, in that it's 9 of 11 hired since 2009, not in 2009. That only makes it worse, of course, since there are coaches like Hue Jackson who didn't even make it through 3 years.

actually I think they were all hired prior to the 2009 season, but I honestly haven't checked.
I think I was wrong about mora being a first timer ... so 9 out of 11 were first time head coaches.

Singletary and Cable actually coached their teams in 2008 as interim head coaches, but they were hired full-time in 2009, so I guess that's where the statistic comes from. Plenty of coaches have been hired since 2009 (e.g. Chan Gailey, Pete Carroll, Mike Shanahan, and Jason Garrett in 2010, Pat Shurmur, Leslie Frazier (full-time), Mike Munchak, and Jim Harbaugh in 2011), so the 9 of 11 applies specifically to 2009, and what I read a few days ago was incorrect.

If you look at that list, Munchak did okay and of course Harbaugh has been great in their first years, but otherwise it's not too impressive a list, reinforcing the idea that Philbin is anything but a shoo-in for success.

I like a guy who has done it before. That said everyone who has done it before started somewhere-------------if I were a fish fan I would like this move. Time will tell

    Excellent press conference by Philbin.

He won't be anything like Morono.

    Thank god.

TBH I would have preferred any of those hires (esp Gruden) to them getting someone with something to prove and some drive.
