True, but what matters more is which team will guarantee him the most money. He's probably going to be the most sought after FA this Spring. Wouldn't surprise me to see him at a cap number around $10 mil, especially with the TV money right around the corner.
We can move some money around I think. Plus we carry over 2011 cap space to the new season. Tanny is at his best i ncreating cap space... I wouldn't worry. I'm sorry but how is a "veteran RT on the cheap" going to fix our line? Also one of the most loved Jets, Damien Woody, was a highly-paid free agency RT. The problem is that between trades (Cromartie, Holmes) and free agency (Scott, Faneca) we brought in guys that didn't deserve the money they got/are getting. I have nothing against signing a guy in his prime from another team while keeping all my picks in the process.
OL is a funky position; good players who are coached well and play as one can outperform more talented players. Hunter sucks but Moore is decent and I'd rather not swap out two guys in one year. Keep Moore and add a pretty high pick at RT and a late round guard who can replace Moore down the line.
Scott and Pace will be gone in 2013 (freeing up A LOT of money), Sanchez's contract will go way down and guys like Cromartie will be cuttable. As long as he accepts a cap number of 7 mill in 2012 the Jets can easily fit a big number from 2013 and afterwards. That said he won't get more than 8.5 per year imo.
Unless Nicks is playing RT, then No. Um...no. Moore has been consistently underrated in this league for the last 4 years. While I agree with your sentiments, the Pats have had more than double the amount of picks than the Jets and still can't find quality players.
That's pretty much it, I hate the Yankees yet when ever anybody says all they do is sign the best FA every year they always lose because they leave out all the homegrown talent during their last 5 WS wins. They had a core of quality players that were developed from within. We need to stop looking for the quick fix instead of drafting and developing. I will say Nicks is one of the very best in his prime so it's a little different but I know exactly how you feel and I agree with it.
pretty much this..would be sad to see him going, but he had a great year last year. But you're right and he doesn't fit with the power running style.
Huh? I pointed out they will be at $125M with several starting positions unfilled. Even with the carryover it doesn't work. They would have what 2-5M left to sign a starter at RT, a starter at FS, SS, WR2, etc. It makes no sense to start rookies or players at the league minimum at those positions just for the sake of upgrading Guard. Especially since Nicks will have plenty of teams looking to pay him Jabari Evans money or better.
Vollmer, Mayo, McCourty, Chung, Wilfork, Brady, Mankins basically all their best players were drafted or obtained with a pick trade (Welker)
You can't really look at it from a one year stand point. Would I give Carl Nicks 8 mill and save 5-7 by cutting Moore and Hunter...yes but. Do I want to give him 8 mill for 4 years...No. I don't think its smart to invest that kind of money in a guard. Moore is stll playing at a good level and you can get guards in the middle rounds of the draft.
I agree with you but tanny and co would prefer to make moves to get a spot on the backpages of news papers.
yeah but people were trying to argue for the value of having lots of late round picks - those guys you listed (with the exception of the miracle Brady pick) were pretty much all 1st round picks (with a couple of 2nd rounders) - you would expect people to get starters with their first round picks (with the odd bust - which the Pats have had also). that does not seem much of an argument for the value of late round draft picks (especially when you lok at how poor our return has been on those picks) - so long as we are not overpaying (which has happened) I have no issue with trading late round draft picks for quality vets
If you cut moore and hunter you HAVE to use either cap space or high picks for new offensive linemen. You want two guys from Turner and Landolt and Schaderaff to be your opening day starters?
Honestly I don't want to cut Moore because of his leadership presence, if we can save money by cutting Hunter, then do it. I'm not sure if we have enough cap space to hire a Safety or PRer for 8 million dollars without cutting both of those, as I don't know our exact cap status at the moment. But of all the gaps we have, WR, Safety, PRer, and RT, If we're going to be spending big on any of those positions, I'd rather it be either a Safety or PRer. I feel like they'll show bigger immediate improvements than a guard for 8 million will do. Especially when a guard wasn't one of our glaring weaknesses this season.
