No, I will take the two AFC championship games, thank you. Rex did a bad job this year, and the team slid back. The QB sucked. What could Joe Namath possibly know about Tony Sparano? They say opinions are like assholes, everyobody's got one. That doesn't necesssarily mean I want to see everyone drop their pants. Joe was carping about this team when it was winning. It so happens he said something negative about them this year and they played a mediocre season. That doesn't mean he knows anything about anything. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
I was going to ask this clown with all those relatives who served their country if he has ever done anything of that nature other than standing up with his shirt off, waving his beer in the air and shouting USA Unlike you, Buddy Ryan did serve his nation in combat. For some of us that is important but anyhow, since the moderators very properly banned the jackass, the point is now moot
It'd be different if Namath said, "I'm a bit surprised by the hire, thought they'd go with someone more experienced, but I'll keep an open mind." Instead, he's trashing the move, despite the fact that A)Sparano's knowledge of the game is highly respected by several Super Bowl winning coaches (Parcells, Peyton, Coughlin) and B)NFL history is full of examples of coaches stepping into new roles and doing just fine. I don't know what Namath's problem is, don't know if he feels "disrespected" by Rex and the Jets somehow, but he's wearing his anti-Jets sentiments on his sleeve right now, and it's kinda annoying.
Namath did not trash the move. He questioned hiring someone as OC who did not have a longer record calling plays. And I would hardly call anyone who is a fan of the Jets "anti-Jets" merely because he questioned a move made by the current people running the team. The team is much bigger than Tanny or Ryan.
Nonsense. He basically said Sparano was hired because he had ingratiated himself with the coaching fraternity, not because of his ability or knowledge. That's a slam. The guy's credentials might not be obvious, but there's a myriad of ways Rex and Tanny could have gained insight into his knowledge and capability. Saying this was a "who ya know" hire, rather than one based on merit, is pretty insulting to everyone involved.
Namath said "I've watched Tony work down here with the Dolphins and I thought he carried himself very well through all the adversity and all, but other than having called some plays with the Dallas Cowboys, I don't know what his credentials are for an offensive coordinator," And yes, he observed that Sparano worked formerly with Parcells. Seems like factual observations, particularly that his playcalling experience is limited. Namath also said he dealt well with adversity. I don't think those comments amount to trashing someone.
Sparano was HC in Miami for 4 years. In all of those 4 years he had an OC to manage. You don't think he worked out what the OC's job was in all that time?
We see in the Jets a team where the HC is not someone despite having been one for three years who would be seen by many as a candidate to call the plays.
I suspect you're being deliberately obtuse about this because you don't like the hire yourself. Hard for anyone with logical detachment to look at the bolded statements here and not think they're kinda insulting to those who are involved with the move.
If this was the one thing Namath questioned all year, it would be different, but he's constantly bashing the team. He's insulted Mark Sanchez, taken shots at Rex Ryan, and is critical of everything they do. I'm going to laugh next season when Sanchez becomes what most of us know is inevitable and brings us to the big game, permanently leaving Namath in the shadows. Sanchez already has a better post season record than him, and I think that's what's making Namath so angry.
Those are all fair observations. Do you disagree that there are coaching networks, or that Tanny used to work for Parcells? Do you deny that Sparano has little play calling experience? Do you deny that he has not previously been an OC? Those are all fair points that Namath has made, and he has also said some things that are complimentary about Sparano. BFD. As for myself I have separately posted that Sparano does seem to have a coaching philosophy that is close to Ryan's, and might well make a good fit working with Rex. We shall see. And logical detachment is something you claim for yourself? Heh, that's a good one. You seem like a lot of homers who whine and bitch whenever someone says something other than everything is great and that the people currently running the team are something other than the the greatest football minds ever.
That stuff is true, and it raises some legit questions, but Namath came right out and said this hire is based on fraternal connection rather than merit. That's a hugely insulting assumption. And the "WTF are they doing?!?", hyperbolic bluster was unnecessary, too. Not the kind of thing you'd expect from a guy who's supposedly in the team's corner. Not at all. I'm cautiously optimistic about the Jets' future, but it's clear mistakes have been made. I have no problem with reasoned criticism of people in the organization. I just don't like over the top, reactionary fan stuff or "pundits" with a clear agenda unfairly bashing the team.
i've never seen namath play except i saw the highlights of superbowl III and have listened to him couple of times on 1050. saying that, i honestly don't care what he says. he did something for this organization 40 some odds years ago...give it a rest namath...
Namath observed correctly that Sparano has past associations with others, which is correct. He also observed that Sparano has not previously been an OC, also correct. He did not say that Sparano has no ability or is otherwise certain to fail. And what "merit" do you think Sparano has shown in his past that would indicate he will be a very good or great OC? In assessing Sparano, I suppose you could say his other previous coaching positions might be the right kind of experience to become a successful OC. But merit is not the word I would use if we mean directly applicable experience. As you well know the problem most who hated Schotty had with him was his play calling. You must admit it is at least a bit odd that Schotty's replacement would have very little in the way of a track record at play calling. The fact of the matter is that we have very little other than hope upon which to base a prediction that Sparano will be an upgrade over Schotty in the play calling department.
