You can console yourself at least with the fact that you're not the only to completely not get it.

yeah rex spent too much time with his mother and grandmother

in all honesty, who knows if the rex we see at the pressers, who goes to great lengths to not lambast his players/staff, is the same rex behind the scenes. he himself has stated that he's much harder on his players than we would believe if just based on his comments to the media. you'd hafta factor in this statement as well, if you're going to take rex's word on not being around his father much as a kid as a possible reason why they supposedly have different coaching styles.

and, again, without really knowing how critical rex is of his players behind the scenes, i see rex's constant lack of criticism in the public arena and his constant shouldering of any blame/team problems as a very admirable trait. rex is showing weakness because he doesn't call out his players/schotty to the press? would we be in a better situation if rex was the type to snuff schotty on the sidelines?

and abt the kerry rhodes bit--who's to say his 'shuffling from the deck' isn't ryan's 'punch to the face'? Rhodes was not right for this team, and he cost this team, and he is not here anymore. should rex have called him a punk ass pussy to his face on top?

i love rex, and i love him for the jets. however, i do not think he is free of criticism. i agree that he did mess up the holmes captaincy, and that he must address that problem, in one way or another. i also do agree that he is a work in progress. however i feel that rex has other flaws that deserve criticism much more than anything else.

i feel the fact that he himself stated he did not have an idea of the pulse of the team as unacceptable. this does not reflect the player-to-coach level, the factions with players within the team reflect the player-to-player level, with personal problems between Jets. As coach he should have been aware of the team's disunity and should have controlled it, but i don't know if being more of a disciplinarian to the players specifically would have been able to right the specific problems the players felt with each other. also, if he truly wants to be a head coach, he must stamp his identity not just on the defense but on the offense, and become more integral in the offensive scheming, gameplanning, and playcalling.

but to say that rex's coaching philosophy is radically different from his father's based off a few short glimpses that we see in the press, or in that video with rhodes, who HIMSELF probably was not one to practice with much effort, based on the regression we saw from his play during his career? EDIT: which started BEFORE rex became coach? also, what sort of barometer would buddy ryan's philosphy as a coach hold for us, in terms of achievement?

again, i also do think this team needs more discipline, but in different ways. i feel that many of the problems we are seeing/hearing about today would be solved with a team improved at many of its weak points, an offensive philosophy that is effective and works, and a winning season.

I, as the team leader, never cried in front of my team even in the worst of the crisis. You must not be viewed as a soft or weak by your teammate under any circumstances.

Rex cried in front of the team twice to my count in the brief stint of the past 3 years. Hmm? Is that what you call 'hard man'?

seriously? we have one bad year in 3 years and we were 8-8. You guys are acting like we havn't had any success under him and that he needs to go now.

who cares about division titles when you make the title game. Ask the Pats if they would trade their div titles for 2 chances to reprsent the AFC in the SB.

a significant step back? please stop.

Using this irrational lack of logic the steelers would have been blown up after they missed the playoffs 2 years ago, Aaron Rodgers led GB to 6-10 in '08- get rid of him! Drew Brees? out of SD in 2 years, Peyton Manning? 6 years to finally win a playoff game? cut him after 3!

It's so beyond silly these discussions that we are having on thios board. It's to the point of embarrassment and now there's an article saying rex needs to be more like Buddy? Seriously? the same Buddy Ryan who NEVER won a playoff game?

GB didn't win the div or host a playoff game last year- did their SB count?

Apparently, my use of metaphor is completely lost on you. I wasn't literally calling for Rex to punch people in the face. I was calling for a balance of discipline. Read the last sentence before you shoot off with an ignorant post.

Have you been asleep for the past year? Look at this team. They look like a bunch of fucking clowns. There is no real pride there. Just attitude and arrogance. And it starts right at the top. Rex needs to tighten things up, or he'll find himself riding the next rail out of town once the new big thing catches Woody's eye.

I know he's a damn good coach. I've been one of his biggest supporters since the beginning. But there comes a time when you have to stop being a raging homer (I know it's hard, junc, but you were even able to do it with Herm before he left) when you have to call a spade a spade.

The thing that is holding this team back is a lack of professionalism and a lack of discipline. Both can be rectified, but it will need Rex to be a bit less of the jovial punch-in-the-arm galoot that he's been playing for the past 3 years.

Don't agree at all. It's a lack of a RT, a fullback who can take a swing pass and be a lead blocker, a TE who can catch the ball and seal the edge, a safety who has the kind of range QB's need to account for on every snap a punishing running back who doesn't break down after delivering a hit on a lb.

How did they win 8 games? And then collapse like a bunch of amateurs in the final 3 games? This team gave up in the face of adversity. Yes, the personnel is lacking, but when teams REALLY buy the company line, they don't try to give games away like they did against the Giants. They overcome.

The team was bad this year, they had a bad year but the results have been great 2 of the 3 years he's been here and his 4 playoff wins are 4 more than Buddy ever had.

I am not and have never been a homer, I call ti like I see it. EVERYONE failed this year but does that mean I'm going to give up on everyone? That's not how I live my life, it's not all what have you done lately. I look at the overall body of work. Players/coaches/execs all have down games, down seasons and that may be a signal they need to tweak some things but to act like he hasn't done anything and now needs to be like Buddy who never won a playoff game is silly.

The thing holding the team back this year was lack of OL, a WR quitting, a struggling 3rd yr QB and an overrated defense. When the team looked even more out of control at times the last 2 years did it stop them from getting to the doorstep of the SB? now that they failed in dec instead of January everything needs to change? That's silly, Rex has a successful formula. He does need to keep learning and tweak things like any successful person but he doesn't need to make radical changes.

While it's a well written opinion I think it's way too harsh on Rex. You are making way too many leaps in logic with this while at the same time putting Buddy on way too much of a pedestal. While Rex definately has to take a good amount of blame for this season, it still amazes me how quick the fans will turn on the HC. I'm going to give the guy who has brought the Jets further then our last few coaches another season to right the ship before I crucify him.

more than just the last few coaches, more than any coach. Prior to Rex we had NEVER won playoff games in back to back years and never made back to back title games(whether AFL or AFC). I get the frustration, this year sucked but it amazes me how quickly the fanbase turns on coaches and players. Outsode of NE w/ a healthy Brady and Indy w/ a healthy Manning what team makes the playoffs every year? GB missed w/ as recently as '08, NO missed '07 & '08, Bal missed in '04, '05 & '07, Pitt '06 & '09, SD the last 2 years, the Giants the previous 2 years, Philly this year, ...

It's extremist logic, meant to make a point. Rex, aside from defensive schemes and eye color, drifted to the polar opposite of what his father was. He talks at length about Buddy in one of the chapters of his book. Buddy would get men to follow him with 4 words as easily as a speech. Rex, he doesn't shut up.

I'm not turning on Rex. Read the article again and you will see that. But just as the offense needs more balance, so does Rex's way of running the team. Before it turns into a circus.

but again as a Head Coach why would you want Rex to be like Buddy? he's already a better HC than Buddy ever was, Rex isn't half the DC Buddy was but Rex is our HC not DC.

Well, maybe calling you a homer is a bit off. More like, you are fiercely loyal to your own opinions, even when you realize at some point that they are wrong.

Buddy was far too militaristic, and maybe that WAS his downfall, but the polar opposite ends up failing just as easily. No, Buddy wasn't successful as a head coach. I think I even mentioned that. But it doesn't mean that his methods of leading men were wrong. It takes more than players to win games.

He doesn't need to be like Buddy. But he needs to instill some discipline in this team. Why don't you get that?

The same way teams like Denver, SD, Oakland, the Bears, Eagles, Cardinals and Cowboys did.

The NFL is a league of basic mediocrity most of the teams have holes and match ups are exploited or not every week in this league.

We didn't beat one team with a winning record this year. That may be effort but logic tells me we didn't lay down against all those teams with better than 500 records, we simply aren't as talented.

Dallas is similar to the Jets. I unfortunately have to watch their games each week. No discipline at all. And a ton of talent. They under-performed much worse than the Jets this year, actually.

Denver is a team that plays better than their roster, because they have that discipline. They play with pride. Not with undeserved arrogance.

Talent is only part of the equation.

It seems that everything Rex does is to the extreme one way or another.
