The problem is Tannenbaum...he has been horribly for years, atrocious picks, bad contracts and to make it worse he is delusional about the level of the ability players on this team have. Get prepared for a full speed spiral downhill as long as he remains. I don't think it's Rex but Rex has absolutely no say in personnel decisions, that has been made clear by Woody a million times.
Brian Billick said on the NFL network last night that Rex is just maturing as a coach. That when an OC or DC become a head coach it takes time for them to adjust to the player coach dynamic that is different from when they were a coor. They mature and realize that they can't be friends per we with players and that they have to make some hard decisions. Billick says he expects to see Rex develop in the manner this offseason....I hope he is right because sometimes the fact you love a player doesn't mean he is the right player. Loyalty will have to be trumped by team.
I still really like Rex and have a lot of faith in his ability to coach, I just hope he can keep his emotions in check at least a little so he doesnt burn out - he reminds me a bit of the ex-England coach (and player) Kevin Keegan (but with a lot more tactical nous) - a great guy and a great motivator but someone that was undone by being too emotional and too invested in the players. Tanny's reputation has suffered as much as anyone on the jets this season - we look at deals like the ones that brought Cro and Holmes here and everyone thought he was a genius - he has done very little of late however and that "we have loads of guys like Cruz" comment was freaking ridiculous
Cant argue too much with that - its the same in any industry - sports included. even as a corrdinator u are more so like one of the guys, at times an intermediary to the bosses. as the MFIC, things are different and the faster u realize that the easier the transition for everyone. PS - billick knows his shit and i look for him to get even more candid as time goes on if the network allows it.
don - 90+% of this board over the last few years have been singing MT's praises. even annointing his quality over quantity style as the better approach when compared with bellichek. to have a 180 degree turn this fast is unfair at this point and i do not think we are looking at a downward spiral at all. i do agree it seems they have somewhat convinced themselves on the fictional talent level here - c his comment yesterday about having v. cruz - like players on the roster! time will tell.
That's MY question. I mean, they have electricity and interweb down in Jacksonville, don't they?! Can you imagine if the Jets were interviewing for a new headcoach and one of the leading candidates is a guy who is routinely referred to in the local media as a problem the team is looking to correct? (EDIT: Put another way, imagine if there were a vibrant internet back when Leon hired Rich Kotite.) It's really hard for me to believe. So much so that I combed through the bios of all the Jacksonville Jaguars front office people and Shahid Khan to see if any of them had connections with Marty Schottenheimer and were doing this as a favor. Turns out - they might actually WANT to interview the guy.
I know they have and maybe you can convince me what he has done good for this team since drafting Revis in 2007? I am willing to change my mind but I don't see it. Without even being asked a question he butted in yesterday to say the Jets have a locker room full of Cruzs on this team, really? Eventually people will see the problem but I guess just not yet.
What was funny though was that as he was saying that Rex was staring at him with a 'you what!?' expression.
We do have Kyle Wilson and Joe Mcknight who looks good. Kerley has shown he can be an above average slot receiver. We did get Santonio for a 5th rounder early on which was amazing since he helped win so many games, and now looking back we messed up giving him a huge contract. We also drafted Wilkerson. Maybin also looks like a good pickup. Unfortunately he still has the same problem we always had with him which was he doesn't hold onto to draft picks. This leads to less depth and having to get value on every one of your picks, which he has not done the last couple years.
I would say the majority of us want nothing more then to see Rex become the envy of the NFL. Yet, there is no doubt he has to change and grow. This being the first year he has hit the bumps in the road will be a huge test and how he repsonds will go a long way in deciding if he will be here long term......My Money is on Rex.....
Going 8-8 and missing the playoffs at this point was probably the best thing to happen to the Jets and Rex. I hope that this season will humble Rex a bit and make him see that he can't do everything the way he has been if he wants to be successful. We've all known that Rex has some major flaws, but we've always overlooked them as long as the team was winning.
I'm still a fan of Rex but, it's extremely disconcerting for a guy that prides himself of having the pulse of his team was completely out of the loop for the entire season. As Per Jenny Vrentas Brandon Moore knew something was wrong by Wk 4. Addressed team after BAL loss, saying in 9 NFL seasons, he'd never seen such bickering. How is that possible that there was tremendous friction and Ryan was oblivious? He needs to take ownership of this team on every level, oversee the offense, defense, game plan and control his players not be there pal.
I have to agree somewhat with Mambo. It has become glaringly obvious to me (a simple fan without the greatest football knowledge) that Rex is out of touch with half of his team. That’s fine when you’re a D.C. but he’s no longer a D.C. obviously. Rex was an assistant coach / defensive coordinator for a very long time, something like 22 years. When you’re a defensive coordinator, you’re the good cop and the head coach is the bad cop. In his book, Rex also revealed that in his marriage, he plays the role of the good cop with his kids while his wife is the bad cop. I know that may seem trivial, but it shows that Rex is most comfortable in the role of the good cop. As a head coach, you have to be the bad cop because the buck stops with you, and I don’t think that Rex has been able to embrace that yet. He wants to be everyone’s buddy. I also think that coming into the head coaching job with the NYJ, Rex’s initial strategy was to run the defense while leaving the offense completely up to Schottenheimer. After three seasons now, I can’t say that I think his strategy has changed. It’s obvious sometimes in post-game press conferences that Rex didn’t know major things that were going on in the game with our offense. For example most recently, not knowing whether Holmes was benched, or benched himself. That’s fine to play to your strengths and delegate responsibility, but I don’t think Schottenheimer is the person you want to hand the keys of your offense over to. That strategy could work, but not with Schottenheimer running things. Don’t get me wrong, I love Rex Ryan as our coach, however he needs to grow and mature as a head coach. A few things I’d love to see him change next year are to get tougher with the players, and stop with the cutsey stand-up comedy acts for the media in press conferences. I’m not saying I want to see him transform into Eric Mangini at all; Rex is who he is, but he can also get better.
How do you define 'years?' Drafted D'Brick, Mangold, Harris, Revis (4 elite players) Drafted quality players in Keller, McKnight (KR leader in '11), Wilson, Conner Wilkerson and Kerley look to be big contributors moving forward Plax on a 1 yr deal out of prison for peanuts was also a great deal Terms of free agency, a huge reason for our '09 and '10 runs was the bringing in of players like T-Rich, Woody, Faneca Traded garbage for Holmes (yes, the contract looks terrible right now, but for what we got him for it was a steal) The Braylon Edwards trade was also a steal. Cromartie trade also seems to be pretty solid in our favor. Yes, he obviously has his misses (Gholston, although some of this is on Mangini, Ducasse, the Aso situation, Holmes contract) but his track record speaks for itself the last few years. He did seem to overestimate the talent level we had this year, but again, on the whole he's a tremendous evaluator and trade dealer.
our fanbase has gotten spoiled already and we haven't even won it all. it's amazing anyone would even discuss a new HC or QB, maybe our fanbase doesn't deserve to win?
Unfortunately, you may be right. Too many spoiled people. Sanchez is the best QB we've had in 40 years and they want to crucify him for a semi-down season when our OL sucked and receivers sucked and coaching sucked.
That’s serious. Although sadly, I can’t say I’m surprised. Honestly at some level, I’m kind of grateful for the late season collapse, given that I don’t think we were going to go anywhere in the playoffs with this team anyway. I’m hoping that this collapse with have the affect of pouring salt on a wound – that is, to draw attention to the fact that there are serious problems that have to be fixed. I think that the problems in the locker room are due to the lack of leaders and role models on the team. Mark Sanchez isn’t a vocal leader, sorry to say. He can be a good QB, but he doesn’t strike me as the kind of Alpha that can inspire a locker room. Losing guys like Thomas Jones, Tony Richardson, Faneca, Woody, all within a season or two really hurt. Now I know all those guys couldn’t stick around because they were getting old or there were logistic reasons that they couldn’t be kept, but there was a leadership void that was left that didn’t get filled. It took a little while, but we’re seeing the results of that void now.
Rex is still a new coach, relatively speaking. He'll be fine. Saying Rex isn't honest with his team or himself is flat out wrong. He will always defend his players and coaching staff, publicly, that doesn't mean he ignores all of our problems on the field. And please stop blaming Tanny. Every move you ever make in football is somewhat of a gamble. Based on the money we had last off season we did pretty well. Unfortunately some of the gambles didn't pay off. The only thing you can fault him for is not beefing up the offensive line, but the way Hunter was playing, can you really get mad at him for it? Even the fans were demanding we start Hunter this year. Everyone seriously thinks they know everything about this business, and when things don't work out they play the blame game.
More people are worried about the lack of draft picks every year. When there are less draft picks, you have to hit on mostly everyone. If you miss like Gholston/Vlad(Vlad may end up being serviceable but drafting him 2nd round seems quite high for a project player) it really creates a lack of depth. We have gotten solid players out of the draft, wilson, mcknight, kerley, wilkerson, but we have not gotten much depth. I think the lack of draft picks has been a complaint even when we have drafts when we hit on everything.
