LOL. PICK YOUR SPOTS..... Don't go for the record for Pass attempts. COME ONE HERE... look at the stats, the Jets were running the ball nicely - The majority of pass attempts were disasters.
Again, in no way am I defending Shotty. Although, I've supported him in the past its clearly time to move in a different direction there. And I agree the real strength of the Giants D is they're pass rush. I was at the game and although the Jets appeared to be running well, the Giants started stacking the box like most teams have done against us. Passing in non obvious passing situations ( ie 1st down ) could have had two potential benefits - 1) it neutralize the Giants pass rush to some extent , as they had to respect the run and 2) it could help to loosen up the safeties , creating more lanes for both running and passing. Its just unfortunate that Sanchez and the Jets O was clearly off on Saturday, if he completed even 5% more of his 1st down passes this game is completely different. I'll even contend that if he hit McKnight on the wide open wheel route, the outcome of this game would have been much better. Its easy to look at the boxscore in hindsight and say - wow the Jets passed 60+ times what a horrible gameplan. What people need to consider is that the Giants made adjustments , they started stacking the box with 9/10 defenders, almost challenging us to pass. Did we abandon the run too early - probably based on the fact that it was a close game, but bottom line the Giants rolled the dice challenging us to beat them in the air where they've been toasted all year , we just couldn't take advantage of it.
Was gonna say this... Rex is an idiot. The Giants were playing like complete crap except for 1 play...
I don't think Rex is an idiot. I think he's doing his best to protect Schottenheimer even if he knows it's a lost cause. The fact that we threw so much is partially on him though.
Just to be clear here: Eli Manning has only had two games in an 8 year career where he dropped back as much as 56 times. Both games were losses for the Giants and he didn't play well in either of them, with one of them being a total disaster against the Skins in 2007. Manning has not attempted 50 passes in a game since 2007. This was a total fuckup on Schotty's part. He just couldn't see the forest for the trees (again) and he put Sanchez out on a very weak limb when he just couldn't stop calling passes even when they were not working. It's almost like on some level he was trying to sabotage Sanchez to save his own job. There's no other good reason for him to have Sanchez throw that many passes in what was a tight game until the end. It just makes no sense.
I have been saying this all along. I think the reason Sanchez has "that damn look on his face" and why he takes so long to throw and make decisions is because he knows that what he is being told to do is bullshit and he is struggling with himself to either 1) Just do what he has been told to do, or 2) Do what he knows is the right thing to do that will win the game.
There were times when I felt this way but after looking at this team objectively I think we need to go back to being a top running team, if we fix the holes on the Oline and maybe get another good RB, someone with more explosiveness, we can go back to what worked the first couple of years with Sanchez. MS does not have to carry the offense, even if his attempts when up from 20 a game to 30 as long as we could run the ball well I think we are in a better position to control our playoff chances. But this falls on BS, he is not to blame for everything, but his Philosophy is not run heavy, its pass heavy and I don't think that works with the team MT has built.
I said that going into the game..... If I were Coughlin I would have played this game as if I were playing the crappiest QB ever... Known for their 4 man Pass Rush, i would have had the Giants send the house - Safety's, CBs everyone... Every team should play Mark this way for now on... Don't pussy foot it - Man Coverage and send the house, like Rex used to be known for. Until Mark can stack up 300 yard games with little mistakes he deserves Zero respect IMO.
Exactly, we don't have the personnel for the offense Shotty wants to run, the OL is built more to run block then pass prot, Plaxico is only a RZ threat at this point in his career and Kerley is a rookie who looks wet behind the ears at times and Keller drops too many passes yet Shotty still wants to be pass heavy. Lets not forget we have like 5 running backs on the roster as well, your telling me Shotty doesn't have the sense to actually build an offense around his personnel like most OC's do?
The problem with Rex approach is, inadvertently he might be protecting the guy who is going to replace him after next year. Woody is a conservative business man, if he feels he is losing fan support for the Jets because of his HC and the drama that comes with him, he will replace him with someone more conservative like BS. I like Rex I hope he is our coach for quite some time, but he is not being a HC right now, how do you not know your QB is on the verge of passing 60 times until after the game? If you want a run heavy team, you tell your OC that you want more runs in the gameplan for the week, how about telling the OC make sure Greene gets 22 carries every game. No excuses make it happen. It's like he has no clue what is going on with the offensive CS. Hopefully he can also mature in this aspect of his job
Just to add to this , I could see Sanchez throwing 60 times if we were being blown out, or we were averaging 1 yard per carry in the run game. But goddamnit, Greene and Tomlinson were running well, there was absolutely nothing about that game that indicated the Jets had to go that pass happy. I'm not saying we should have limited Sanchez like we did in game 1 vs Baltimore last season, but there is no reason we couldn't have him on a pitch count of 20-30 attempts in these types of games. 'There are three things that can happen when you pass, and two of them ain't good' - Woody Hayes
we had a million penalties backing us up(mysteriously they never saw the giants commit any), most of our pass attempts came after we fell behind double digits, 19 of the pass attempts happened after that moment and a bunch other we HAD to throw b/c we had penatlies on every drive backing us up.
Junc, Schotty called 45 passes BEFORE the Jets fell behind by double-digits. He called 31 passes in the first half. Do you really think what you posted makes any sense in that context?
again, we had a million penalties setting up passing situations(where if we ran the complainers would have gone nuts). People forget this already, we were constantly in 1st and 20, 2nd & 15, 3rd and 10 situations b/c of the penalties.
31 times in the first half alone? And btw you don't have to call a pass on every 1st and long and 2nd and long play. Doing so just makes the defense better able to tee off on the passer.
our 1st 2 possessions we threw it on 1st down and set up 2nd and 2 each time but again some penalties and other circumstances dictated passing plus wasn't everyone clammoring for us to throw against the giants bad secondary? then when we do they go nuts. We should never throw 59 times unless we have to but even in non penalty situations we still would have needed to throw about 50 times. We didn't loses b/c of gameplan or playcalling, we lost b/c the giants had a HUGE edge in peanlties and we didn't execute.
just to put things in context ... Even in the AFCCG against the Steelers we only threw the ball 33 times, despite being down 24-0 at one point.
It's actually more than 64 times because Sanchez had a couple of scrambles also. I'm betting the number of throw Sanchez attempted is close to a franchise record.
