This is exactly what I thought as soon as I read the OP - why the hell would he sign an extension when he is looking to get promoted (either with us or elsewhere)?
Maybe that's why he did such a shitty job coaching up the OL this year. The Pats are pulling backup linemen off the street and protecting Brady better than the Jets are with their starters.
I agree that the o-line play could have been much better this year but ... the Pats also have a guy who usually gets rid of the ball pretty quickly and rarely vacates the pocket because he feels pressure that isn't there.
Well Callahan DID do all those things with Gannon in Oakland, but Gannon had been in the league for about 10 years before all that happened. BUT....if you think that having receivers run option routes, making very fast quick decisions by the QB and throwing the ball to the wide parts of the field, sound like Mark Sanchez's skill set, then have at it, because that's the West Coast offense accourding to Callahan. Also the only 2 WRs really fit to run it, btw, are Kerley and Holmes Be carefull what you wish for
You act like the Jets are stocked with nothing but first round talent. Outside of Mangold and Ferguson, they have a 6th round guard, a former defensive tackle at the other guard position, and Hunter played for fucking Hawaii. Not exactly a lot of attention paid to acquiring talent for that squad.
I forgot Shotty is signed through 2013. Thought it was only until the end of next season. Not sure why the hell they gave him a 2 year extension. Certainly hope it doesn't effect their decision to fire him. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2011/12/brian_schottenheimer_takes_res.html
the only reason i think they extended schotty is to avoid a lame duck oc situation. coaches are either extended or they're fired. rarely do they just finish out their contract. you already know he's losing the ears of some of his players. if you add in the fact that he's not even going to be here next year, that would give players no reason to respect the guy during this season. it's also why i think they tried to keep it quiet. if they really wanted him back, they would have made a bigger deal about it. they gave him the rest of this season to impress them and by all accounts, schotty failed.
Agreed on the lame duck issue, but that's why I don't get extending it for 2 years. Extend him through next year to avoid the lame duck thing, then re-evaluate at the end of this season. Don't extend him for 2 years.
True, but the Jets should look for a true upgrade at OC. They need someone who will make the most of Sanchez attributes. He does throw a nice long ball (he hit several alst year), yet they never once (as far as I know) ran a nice 1st and 10 play action fly this year.
i didn't know he was signed for 2 years after this one. i thought it was just through the 2012 season. then i don't know. still, after this year, i find it hard to believe he's staying. especially this last game.. i think even rex realized that having this guy running the offense is not a good idea. 69 dropbacks while the head coach has preached ground and pound? he can't be liking that.
I can't disagree with anything you said. And I do not think Cally is the right choice for a replacement, unless he changes the overall philosophy that he has adhered to for most of his career. patfanken may make some douchey posts on occasion, but he is correct in his observation that Sanchez is a bad for for the WCO. However, it is hard to believe that BC wouldn't be an upgrade as a coordinator either way. He just wouldn't be the right upgrade.
