The chance of the Jets once again backing into the playoff is there, but slim at best. As some of you, I am looking to the future and some changes are needed. 1st - I don't want to bash Shotty, because we don't know how much is him or Sanchez, yet I feel we need a change at OC. 2nd - Brunnell won't be a Jet next year and it's time to bring in competition to challenge Sanchex. I know he won't be the cheapest backup and he wants to walk into a situation where he is looked at the #1 option to start, but Matt Flynn does not have close to Kolb's pre trade stats and it looks like Kolb may not even be the starter next year in Arizona. If not Flynn then at least someone who would be a threat to either motivate or unseat Sanchez, either way we need improvement at QB. 3rd - I blame Tanny and Rex for not having a RT before they sent Woody packing! That was a HUGE weakness this year. Draft, trade or pay big in FA, don't care how, but we need someone to anker down the right side. 4th - Get a new starting safety to play next to Leonhard. Niether Smith or Pool would be starting on any other team, unless injuries. 5th - Get a pure pass rusher to play oposite end of Mabin. Oh YES, resign Mabin today! After an offsean to learn and with what we have seen so far, our defense is a good fit for him. He needs to be smarter and not make mistakes, but he is the best pure rusher we have had all year. Not to mention he will be a lot cheaper to resign than anyone on the market. So there is my thoughts for what thier worth. Changes/improvements at five key areas; secondary, QB, O-line, pass rush and a new face at OC. Bash me all you want, but as it stands this team is nothing more than average and will not be any better next year, unless changes are made. Right now teams, fans and the media are laughing at the Jets, for falling apart and all the TALK. If that doesn't motivate the team to make major changes then we are in serious trouble.
1. Change at OC was warranted a few seasons ago. Jets are about good 3 seasons too late (and I'm being very generous here too.) 2. Instead of a quality backup that won't see the field, I suggest Jets bring back Braylon first and foremost. A physical deep threat that was in sync with Sanchez will help the passing game a lot more than the quality backup that won't even hit the field unless during the victory formation or garbage time. 3. Slauson, Moore and Hunter all need replacements ASAP 4. Leonhard is not coming back. Make that two. 5. Pass rusher and ILB that is fast enough.
Kerley is better this season than expected, Plaxico was good for coming back from time away and will be good for another year. If Holmes plays like he is paid, we would be fine at receiver. Its the QB position we need better play at. We need to stop the open door at the position. Holmes is the big play, Plaxico the tall fade, and Kerley the quick slant. Add in Keller as the outlet and we have four good recievers for Sanchez. I don't like the idea of bringing in a FA, and we have too many areas to address in the draft as it is. Our 1st rounder should be an O-line pick and nothing in the second round at receiver will be better than what we already have.
We get better play at QB when we improve our terrible receiving corps. You don't give these guys to a QB and expect him to do something with them. You hope for it, but you certainly don't expect it, and you certainly don't punish him when he can't make magic with utter shit. These are not great receivers, they are niche receivers. Holmes is your league's average #2/slot receiver, and Plax makes for a good possession/red zone receiver. These are players that compliment corps that already have that explosive #1 receiver, but they are our top 2 targets. Pay attention to whenever they show the receivers downfield, they are not open. You don't expect Plax to get open because he's slow as hell, and only uses his size to make catches. Holmes needs a #1 receiver to get him open. He's not about to beat the opposing #1 corner weak in and weak out, and he's not going to ever draw a double team. Putting pressure on Sanchez will do nothing but mess up his head. You build your offense around the QB you took with the #5 pick. You don't let go of his favorite target, you don't bring a guy straight out of prison to be your #2, and you don't bring in a #2 receiver to be your #1. Then you must be fine having an offense constantly holding you back. When you have an offense as bad as ours, you go out and improve it. OL is one area, receiver is another. We go into next season with these receivers, and nothing short of Peyton Manning will get this offense to work.
Ok, should we just ignore the fact that all of them are sloppy, or at least lazy, route runners, none can consistently get separation and none offer even a semblance of a deep threat? Plax is only going to get slower and should not be re-signed. We need to see if there's a market to move Keller too.
If Peyton comes here (and he is not. He is a dome QB, not an all-weather QB that Brady is.) Keller might become more productive.
You don't need a receiver until you have a QB that can throw the ball or an OC will call a passing play of more than three yards. Out of 59 passes yesterday I can remember exactly two that were thrown downfield, one was overthrown by 15 yards and the other was picked..worry about a QB before worrying about a receiver.
We have a QB that can throw the ball. Pay attention. There are worse QBs in the league getting the ball downfield, and it's because they have quality receivers. It's a two way street. There isn't a QB on this earth that can make Plax a deep threat, and Santonio needs a #1 receiver to open up his opportunities, because he's not the type of guy who's going to consistently beat the opposing team's #1 corner. Reggie Wayne with Kerry Collins, Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky is more productive than Holmes. Wayne put out the same production this season as Santonio has been doing his entire career. That is sad. Holmes is supposed to be our #1 guy, he's certainly being paid like it. Don't buy into his salary. He's overpaid and he's not someone you look at and point the finger at the QB as to why he's not being productive, so don't blame Sanchez for Holmes being overrated. Name me 1 QB in the league that's doing good with the same kind of average weapons that we have. We haven't given Sanchez a lot to work with. We got rid of his favorite target, and then bought in a slow 34 year old receiver, straight out of a 2 year sentence to be his secondary target. You want production out of this offense? Then you bring in better weapons. That's the only answer. Edit** I shouldn't say that's the only answer. Obviously we need to improve the line and get a new offensive coordinator.
We should draft Kellen Moore. He's a winner, deadly accurate, but doesn't have enough arm strength to throw long down the field passes. That's perfect for what were doing. We can snag him in the 4th or 5th round because no one wants him because he is short. He can backup Sanchez so Sanchez can start rushing the ball more
We need to at least BEGIN a rebuilding process at LB. Harris and Maybin can stay. Scott, Pace, Thomas ... thanks for the memories. These guys are starting to look like Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones at the end of their careers. the clock is ticking. We need a couple of young, athletic guys in there ... especially if we're married to Harris for the foreseeable future.
