Obviously Maybin has came on strong as a third year player this season, but with a season ending injury to a very good run stuffing OLB in Thomas, combined with the fact that Pace is getting up there in age (at the age of 32 next season), I believe it's safe to say that the Jets front office must improve the quality of our outside linebacker positions through both the draft and free agency. You can't stress it enough, when running a 3-4 defensive scheme, you can never have enough LB's. Maybin seems to have very good speed and acceleration going up against opposing RT's, if he could only develop another two pass rushing moves ala a spin move, an inside move, and learn how to use his hands to his advantage, he could become a stout situational pass rusher during 2nd and long/3rd and long types of situations but unfortunately, he's severely undersized in regards to being an every down player at the OLB position, therefore, we need another upgrade over Maybin in terms of improving our run defense. If we can find an OLB during either of the first two rounds of the draft, sign a veteran OLB during free agency, and bring back both Thomas (against the run if he's able to recover) and Maybin (pass rusher), we could be set at OLB next season.
I'm very excited to see what Maybin does with a Jets offseason weight training program, and another offseason getting really versed in our schemes. That said, I'd still like us to use another relatively high pick on a linebacker who can be a difference maker on all four downs. We've really suffered from losing Bryan Thomas in the run defense. -X-
I agree. It'll be nice to see Maybin add some weight, but then again, Maybin gaining too much weight could hurt his overall speed burst and acceleration. Even with Maybin turning into a strong pass rusher (thus far), it's still important our front office lands quality OLB's during both the draft and free agency. Hopefully we go OLB during either the first or second rounds of the draft. In regards to this thread topic, I can't agree that Maybin is our best pass rusher as of right now; not until he's going up against opposing franchise Left Tackles ala Calvin Pace. Going up against lesser RT's in regards to pass protection when compared to stout pass protecting LT's is an entirely different beast.
If Pace was better he would have made a lot more plays than Maybin has, remember Maybin is in on just 3rd downs and the 2 min drill, Pace is in on most plays, and Maybin does switch back and forth depending on the matchup
Maybin looks promising, hope he puts on some weight. Having said that, we still need to address OLB in the draft.
Yes, the potential of Maybin is high, but lets not say Maybin is a better pass rusher when compared to Calvin Pace, when he's in his 3rd year with only 5 career sacks and 4 forced fumbles. Nothing against Maybin, because I think the world of the kid as a potential long-term pass rusher, but he has a long ways to go before he's considered as a better pass rusher than a player such as Pace who's put up 38.5 sacks with 17 career forced fumbles. Pace has also put up 50 tackles this year, with another 4 sacks... All going up against much better LT's.
He was going against a tackle and Spliller was chipping him too, should have had a 3rd sack but he hit Fitzpatrick just as he threw on last drive. Don't you think other teams know they have to block him now?

Ryan is obviously enjoying what he has seen from Maybin this season, but with numbers like those one thing becomes painfully obvious. The Jets need to get this man on the field more. Making your place known on a football team takes time, but through eight games Maybin has proven he can help the Jets in ways no one else on the roster can. The Bills might have felt like they had no use for him, although they had to have second thoughts about the decision during last Sunday’s game, but as they say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And as it turns out the Jets seem to have found a diamond for them to polish from the trash heap of the Bills.

The problem is we would be giving up a lot in run defense by playing him as an every down type LB. If he did play every down people would run much more often against us.
I don't disagree, but I'm sure Rex can find a way to get him in more. Vs. Buffalo he played 26 snaps I think after playing zero vs. the Broncos.
NFL elite pass rushers are usually good enough defending the run to justify being out there even when the opposing offense isn't facing an obvious passing situation. This one reason is why Maybin @ this point won't get his play count increased to match the elite pass rushers. == Remember the second Pats game? Yea no Fred Jackson helped on top of Buffalo was going spread most of the game. With Tim Tebow at QB and playing the option the run D would have suffered if Maybin played in that game. Also it looked like the correct move as our D played fantastic that game up until that last horrible drive. I want to see Maybin get more playing time but its not as easy as that. Im hoping after this offseason he puts on some weight and can become more of an every down type of lb.
Teach him to cover LB's, and make him a hybrid SS/passrusher, then you get another LB on the field....
