I had some free time so I put together a quick mock offseason and I wanted to see what some fellow Jets fans thought. FA (resign): Pouha Turner Thomas Burress Folk Strickland FA (let go) Leonhard- His production and play is way down this year, injury might have effected him Tomlinson- kills me to get rid of him but it's what needs to happen Brunell Pool FA (Sign): Mike Tolbert- hard nosed runner who'd be a great compliment to greene Demetrius Bell- it's a down year for FA OTs but i think this guy could continue to develop into a solid T. He's a major upgrade over Hunter and any drafted T plus he'll come cheaper and will allow us to keep our 1st round pick Draft: 1: Vontaze Burfict ILB/OLB- intense, mean, and great pass rushing linebacker who be a great fit at OLB 2: Nick Toon WR- 6'2 WR who's got good hands, a good route runner, great blocker, and son of former Jet great Al Toon 3: Jared Crick DE- 18 sacks in two years, He would have been a 1st round pick if he didn't get hurt this year, he'd help further improve the DL and at this point he's to valuable to pass up 4: Kenny Tate S- a safety Lb hybrid also got injured this year but a versatile player at safety who can hit like a truck, exactly what Rex loves outta his safeties 5: Kellen Moore QB- I'm a fan of mark but Moore is a great college QB and could potentially turn into a great NFL player if he can overcome his size issues. 6: Mike Williams TE- a 6'6 270 TE from alabama, I singled him out while watching the LSU game this year and there were times I swear he was a tackle because of how dominate a blocker he was 7: Best Guard available Hope you guys like it!
Vontaze Burfict seems to be the dream pick but it's unknown if he'll be available when the Jets are ready to pick. Nick Toon!!!! I don't think Jared Crick will be available in the third round, even with the injury. Kellen Moore is not going in the fifth round. I don't know anything about Kenny Tate but the Safety class is supposed to be so weak that I'm leaning towards not going Safety in the draft. I also don't know anything about Mike Williams. I really want Burfict.
Some reports I read said Crick might not be able to attend the combine because his torn pec might not be fully healed by then, this will kill him IMO, maybe wishful thinking but I think it's very possible Tate is a beast, Maryland tried moving him to OLB this year because he's such a strong run defender, def the type of player Rex loves.
Good job. If Burfict is there it's a no brainer. Does Bart move to the outside then or play in rotation? Don't forget we have Mcelroy on IR
Tate got hurt and is out for the year. He will be going back to Maryland. I want an experienced QB to backup Sanchez, we already have Mcelroy to be the 3rd QB and were not carrying 4 QBs. There will most likely be better WR options available when we draft (should be between 15 and 20) in the 2nd round, Sanu, Criner, Dwight Jones all come to mind.
It's seems clear that Burfict is the current favorite by quite a few Jet fans. I think Burfict will be available when the Jets are OTC, if we don't make the playoffs. With the play of Suh and the NFL really cracking down on extra curricular stuff, Burfict's stock may take a slight hit. While Burfict can play OLB, I think he would best suited to replace Scott in the middle. IMO, Jet fans are overrating Nick Toon cause of his blood lines. While Toon is a very good player, there will be a few WRs available in Rd 2 that will have more value. Toon has an early Rd 3 value at this point in time. I'm a big Kellen Moore fan but realize his limitations in the NFL. Moore is a winner, he just doesn't have the physical size to be a dominant NFL QB. I would rather the Jets bring in a Vet QB to play behind Sanchez to make him feel some pressure.
Big NO to Kellen Moore, he's like 5-9 with a water pistol for an arm. Big Mike Williams is only a Junior, I doubt he leaves even with this weak TE class. I think the Toon pick is too much of a cliche to actually happen, but it could happen. I'm ok with the rest, maybe keep Pool or Leonhard. Need someone to go with your pick Kenny Tate, I don't want Eric Smith in the starting lineup ever again. Maybe as a package player, but not fulltime...
Moore is just not an NFL QB, I like the kid, he's tough as shit and wins. If Dad Al wasn't a Jet, Nick wouldn't even be on Jet Fan's radar. They're quite a few more talented receivers more worthy of rd 2 consideration. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jets drafted Toon, I've heard some rumors the Jet's management is interested. Kenny Tate is an interesting option, but I have concerns that he's "too big" to be an effective safety.
So your plan is to actually let the two S who know what a football is go and have Eric Smith + Kenny Tate + Emanuel Cook as our safeties!? God I hope that's not the case. Bell will get more money from the Bills to play LT than from us to play RT... plus he's not much of a run blocker. Thomas after his Achilles injury at 33 yrs old? No thanks.
If they take Toon, it will be because they scouted him and want him, they won't pick him over a better WR on the board if their is one. It's like other offsprings of former Jets, Shuler Jr. fits the need of a blocking TE, yet the Jets haven't sniffed him. Full disclosure: Maybe not the best example I'm not in love with an Safety in the draft, but I'd be ok with Tate at SS if the Jets fill the need of FS in free agency. He's teetering around that Safety/Linebacker line, but I think if he stays under 230 he'll be ok with his frame. Some coaches don't like tall Safeties though, it makes them less compact when it comes to giving or taking a hit. When you're more spread out, you don't have all your power focused into your hit like a 6-1, 220 would...
I agree with Burfict, round 2 I want Matt Reynolds OT BYU, Devin Taylor DE/OLB South Carolina or Antonio Allen S South Carolina Toon is a 3rd rounder at best, good value if we get him there I also want Jake Stoneburner all around TE stock is down a bit because of Ohio State sucking mule balls, then late in the draft I want a CB and potentially a back up C, Trumaine Johnson from Montana would be a great Dime CB for us he's got great size and athleticism
I believe that we should draft trent richardson n take a lb in the second round Also i believe sanchez is garbage n we should trade his ass n get a real qb he is the reason we didnt win a superbowl in the last 2 years
Such an intelligent post. Holy Shit. You are right that our rookie QB is the one that sucked balls vs the Colts in 2009 and the fact that the inside of the defense being completely lit up means nothing... No way Richardson is their around 15-20, no way we are trading Sanchez at this point in time. If the Jets choose to go fourth with Schotty instead of Sanchez I might quit following football and follow... golf
These were my initial thoughts... I could not see how it would be possible to enter next season with Smith and Cook as our starting Safeties. I dont think smith should ever start on an NFL team. IMO, we have to bring in a safety because ours arent cutting it- Michael Griffin, Reggie Nelson, Tyvon Branch, Deshon Golston are all options, anything is better than Smith. Thomas is most likely done now at 33 coming off a major injury. I would love Burfict on this team... Only thing is, I watched some of his games this year, and he just seems like hes lost some of his "crazy" that just made him an absolute beast. I still think he is going to be a very impacful player in the NFL and would be great for the D. With the WR depth, I think in the mid 2nd round some better WR will be available. And oh! You forgot get a new OC!- Probably the 2nd most important thing we can do besides sign a RT
Call me crazy but I think Rex may change up the way this D is played. With the play of our 3 CBs it wouldn't surprise me if Rex wanted to keep them on the field more often, this would mean a 3 CB and 1 SS on the field at a time instead of 2CB and 2 S.
I think we resign Pool, Tomlinson. I think we sign John Carlson a good blocking and catching TE to take Mulligans spot I will take a random shot and say we sign Garrard...
I went to Md and watched Kenny Tate play. He was a stud at UMD but I just dont see it transferring over. Alot of his interceptions were balls thrown right at him and although he makes big hits he doesn't seem to be a tough player if that makes any sense. Most of his big hits come against receivers rather than big rbs.
Why is everyone down on Moore...all the guy does is win, he is Penny part 2 if you ask me. With the ups/downs of Mark that just gives us another option....a prime example is Dalton and what is he doing in Cincy. He doesnt exactly have the strongest arm in the world yet he is winning. People are gonna say that Penny is crap but the guy was tuff as nails and under the right system Moore would be a good NFL Qb.
