to me its the most overrated part of this team

it seems everytime the defense is in a big spot it fails

    both afc championship games
both times we played for first vs the fagtriots

Well if you're gonna talk about when it fails you have to talk about when it succeeds. That is only 4 games right there, how do you think they got to back to back AFCGs.

We are a defnese first team so when our D fails it's worse than when our O fails and the D has failed the last 2 title games and numerous games this year inclduing the other night. It does get a pass for some reason, it doesn't deserve one b/c we know this D can be much better than it has showed.

The D looked good until the fumbled punt. They had a great defensive series and looked to have momentum, and that field position was just deflating.

Yes, it's all the defenses fault our Offense came out against Pittsburgh looking like a steaming pile of shit, that they were on the field almost the entire 1st half of that game. Fuck our defense, they are terrible, they should be able to be on the field for 60 minutes and still give up 0 points:rolleyes:

It has nothing to do with our bonehead offensive coordinator that always starts off slow and cant exploit a defense...

when your D is called upon time and time again to bail out your inept offense, and the occasional fuck up on special teams, it is inevitable they will fail at some point.

lets be realistic here. The D is the strength of the team, that's why they get a pass when they occasionally fuck up. there's much more consistency in that regards in other areas of the team.

the 1 minute 80 yd drive to end the 1st half was before the punt, that was the series that really killed us. They did a good job holding NE to 3 after the fumble but got torn apart the rest of the 2nd half.

Pit got the ball first, ran it down our throats, held onto the ball for NINE minutes and scored a TD. The reason they were on the field so long was b/c they COULDN'T STOP PITT!

This D has failed late in games far too often, we can make all the excuses you want but we had a 9-6 lead w/ a little over a minute to play in the 1st half and they allowed NE to go 80 yds in just over a minute for the TD. They couldn't get a stop late vs. Oak or @NE, they couldn't get a stop late at Pitt in the title game. The D has had more good games than bad but the D leads this team and when they fail it is worse than when the O fails.

My opinion is that the defense gets a pass because everybody recognizes that other than Revis and Harris we have nobody special on that side of the field. So when they're good Rex's system gets the credit and when they stink up the joint nobody really wants to talk about it because very few Jet fans want to criticize Rex and the NY media absolutely wants to stay on his good side. He's red meat on the bone for them.

When your Offense scores 0 points in the first half you are doomed from the start, I don't care HOW good your defense is. It was a shitty game on both sides. If the Jets could play decent offense for a full game the defense might in turn play better, but instead they always seem to be playing damage control.

It doesn't. This defense can't cover TEs if their lives depended on it. And it has regressed in run defense this year.

But then, in terms of squad quality, you cannot say the defense is on equal terms with the offense. Like I once posted in other thread, this defense has less than 50% of the personnel deployed as the EVERYDOWN DEFENDER. And of the every down defender, about half of them didn't even come from the draft (meaning Jets are paying a lot more than they should.) Compare that to the offense - the offense is almost set in terms of every down players, regardless of the personnel package. The disparity in talent distribution is clear in that regard. To make the long story short, if Rex Ryan wasn't designing/calling the defense, this defense unit will be performing somewhere around the middle of the pack at best.

This team needs some serious rebuilding on both sides of the ball - and Tannenbaum must STOP trading the picks away.

Are you kidding. The defense played greast in the first half against the Pats...It was the pathetic offense that couldn't get the job done. The clock management at the end contributed to the late drive as well. Defense in the second half were gassed after the Pats went no huddle, I admit, but they were on the field too much because of the ineptitude of the god awful offense.

The D allowed Pitt to control the ball all first half. Our offense didn't touch the ball until there was under 6 mins to play in the 1st qtr. The O had us w/in 5 pts w/ over 3 mins to play and all 3 time outs. If our D could have held Pitt to a 3 and out we get the ball back w/ well over 2 mins to play w/ a chance to win but the D allowed not one but TWO 1st downs to end the game.

It's a 2 half game, right? The D played well in the first half UNTIL the final minute where they allowed NE to go 80 yds in just over a minute to take all of our momentum away.

While the defense isnt great at all times, they get a pass because the constant 3 and out offense makes it impossible to dominate all game. There are long stretches where the defense keeps them in the game, but after a while they break down(exhaustion) and the other teams get paid as well. so they have plenty of footage to analyze and see where to attack.

    Yep.

Defense played well for 28 minutes. You can't allow 30 points, and multiple back-breaking drives. That's not good enough.

i agree with you and i don't think the d is as good as rex boasts all the time. take my disgust away, other teams with dominant defenses realize there offense dont go 3 and out consistently, the d always has the offense in position to win, they just don't deliver. after a while it is a break down. look at where the pats got the ball and look at time on the filed the d spent, its insane. again i agree the d is not as good as advertised, but there not awful., they need some help

The honeymoon with Rex and the media/fanbase is beginning to wear off just a bit. You can tell by some of the analysis you're getting in the sports media and by the frustration of the fans. Rex raised the expectation pretty damn high his first several years here. By doing that, and coming up short, he's setting himself up for a fall should his team continue to play small in the really big games. He just can't continue boasting without backing it up. He can't be loyal to coaches who underperform (Pettine, are you listening?). His pass, along with the defense's, will be used up sooner than later. Bart Scott is becoming this generation's Mo Lewis plus a big mouth. Brian Thomas=Marvin Jones. Eric Smith= Otis Smith and so it goes.
I give this team one more season before a overhaul will be in order for the defense.

Who cares? The defense was put in a lot of bad spots because of our offense/special teams. The TOP was almost even at the end of the game, it was not one sided by any means. So what does it matter if we dominated the TOP in the first half?

How many points did our offense put up with all that time that they had?

The Defense only gave up two field goals until that final drive. The defense was put in a bad spot on that last drive of the first half. If Sanchez would have wasted some clock, it would have changed things.

Everyone was to blame regardless. It is boneheaded to think that the offense/special teams didn't put our D in a lot of bad positions. At the same time, our D is better then that, they should have made more of an impact as well. Dropped INT, miss oppurtunity on that Brady fumble, etc..
