You have a better chance of having ND being #15-#17(non-football) in the ACC before they go to the Big Ten. Why else would they keep rejecting them year after year. Besides ND has more "rivals" in the ACC than the Big Ten does.
They are rejecting them because they could get away with their sweet heart deal with NBC and be independent while still having their other sports have a conference. Maybe in basketball they have rivals but not really in football. They are more of an geographical fit and has stronger rivalries in the Big Ten instead of being team 15 or 16 in the ACC.

If the ACC could some how pry Penn St. away then that give the ACC a 6/3 advantage, not too mention that the ACC has a good hold on the NY market which ND is a major part of since they are NYC's college team of choice(played a game there every year since 1924). If they get Rutgers and ND, the ACC would have a monopoly in college football in NYC. This could all happen because the Big Ten is just satisfied with what they got and won't make a move until ND does.
ND is the City's team of choice? Is that a feel you get or was there data backing that up. I don't feel that way at all.
http://www.foxsportssouth.com/09/18...a/landing_acc.html?blockID=565497&feedID=3703 "Aside from geography, Notre Dame fits in with the ACC quite well. It has a similar mission regarding academics and athletics, cares about Olympics sports and would be comfortable with the league's other six private schools. And the Fighting Irish still are New York's college football team. They have been since paying NYC a visit in 1924, and famed sportswriter Grantland Rice dubbed Knute Rockne's backfield the Four Horsemen, exploding Dame's national image. The Irish have played numerous “home” games in New York over the years, and still carry weight in the mostly pro-sports town."
ND is NY's team like Rutgers is NY's team. NYC is not a college town, it's all about pro sports here.
Have to agree here. People like Francesa still living in the 60s might think so, but Notre Dame is not New York's team. Basketball will survive, Big East football was always a thrown together mess anyway. I liked it better when the east was independents--Penn State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Rutgers, Syracuse, BC.
Somebody disagrees. http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/20...-college-football-fans-and-realignment-chaos/
Sooo.... are we looking at 4 major 16-teams divisions? It will be interesting to see wether ND and BYU remain independent or join a conference. I also think these major shifts will allow conference such as the MWC (assuming the Big 12 dies as an entity) or the C-USA to expand... PS What will TCU do? Big East is dead now...
It only stays that way if they have no place to put their Olympic sports aka women's sports. At the end of the day what could potentially happen is something like this The non football schools and Villanova splinter off forming their own "Catholic League" with Providence Seton Hall Georgetown St Joes Xavier Villanova Marquette DePaul St Johns Notre Dame That allows Notre Dame to keep independent and gives them a home for the other sports.
I highly doubt it. They play a lot of Big 10/11/12 teams already.Academic-wise and geography-wise they would fit in that conference.
Talk of the Big East and Big 12 merging with the remaining teams...sounds like a horrible idea. http://espn.go.com/college-football...st-big-12-talking-possible-merger-sources-say
