I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt until that play in the Denver game in his first season where Cutler outran him to the sidelines. At that point I began to fear the worst. Now, he can go pound sand. What a tool this guy is.

It wasn't that bad - it's just standard tabloid journalism, nothing more or less.

That doesn't alter the fact that Gholston must be out of his fucking tree and I now seriously dislike him, whereas before he was just like an empty space.

Rex Comments says he is confused

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. In three seasons, Vernon Gholston never sacked a quarterback, but he managed to blindside his former coach.

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said he's "confused" as to why Gholston, now a backup defensive end with the Chicago Bears, would blame him for his flameout. Gholston, who returned to New Jersey Monday night to face the Giants, told reporters after the game he didn't receive a fair shot from Ryan.

"I don't agree with him on that," Ryan said Tuesday. "My job isn't to make one player better or to feature one player. When I came here, my job was to build the best defense we could possibly build and, statistically, it's hard to argue with (the results)."

In 2009 and 2010, the Jets finished first and third in total defense, respectively.

The Jets, who drafted Gholston sixth overall in 2008, gave up on him after three sackless seasons, releasing him in early March. Gholston, a holdover from the Eric Mangini regime, said he was pre-judged by Ryan, which is "sad to say."

Ryan didn't dispute that part of Gholston's claim. In his recent book, Ryan says he felt Gholston was a "phony" when he came out of Ohio State, meaning he was overrated.

"Obviously, I wasn't as high on him as maybe others were, but when I got here, we were all in," Ryan said. "I wanted Vern to be successful and I'd still like him to be successful."

From the day he was hired, Ryan spoke effusively of Gholston's potential. The praise always seemed misplaced, considering Gholston's lack of production. At times, Ryan was mocked by the media because of his non-stop gushing.

In an attempt to salvage Gholston's career, the Jets moved him to defensive end before last season, but that didn't work out either. He was so far down in the depth chart he was declared inactive for all three playoff games, sealing his fate. He made $20 million in guarantees from the Jets.

"I thought he was getting better," Ryan said. "Do I ever think he'll be Deacon Jones? No. But I'm pretty comfortable with myself. Nobody likes to hear negative comments or whatever, but if that's how he feels, that's how he feels.

"I'm not going to please everybody," he continued. "That's not the position I'm in. I'm confused because I think I'm fair. I'm more than fair.

If Gholston wasn't a first round pick with all the guaranteed money he would have been cut in TC his first year and out of football.

Wouldn't it make a bit more sense if he had a decent season, getting 5 or so sacks, then he could at least say that he was capable of doing this all along, but the Jets didn't utilize him correctly?

No. If he was a UDFA he would not have made the team after his fist preseason.

We had an argument in the past about VG and his place among the all time great busts... And I completely fail to remember who it was who brought it up, but there once was a QB, played for Indy, Art schlicter possibly? who was drafted in the first round, and was so bad, the colts then drafted his replacement in the first round the following year. Also I believe there was an OL who was taken top 3 who never suited up for his team that drafted him...

so yeah Gholston's stellar lack of production is astounding, but there are worse stories in history...

I can see how that gets you a role in a porn movie but how does that translate into a roster spot in the NFL?

Really saddened that Gholston has went public in this way. He must be stupid as well as having no drive to be a football player. He has seriously weakened any regard that a football organisation could possibly have for him.

It's all been said already about how delusional or entitled that he comes across.

It makes you think that he has actually found he has no taste for the grind of football and wants to be cut so he can enjoy his money or worse yet this is all a stunt to get retirement and ill health benefits due to brain trauma as a result of contact. Mind you his only risk of a concussion was when Rob "he don't give a fuck" Turner smacked him in the head trying to get some fire from him.

A truly sad day and his advisers must be as thick as shit

Gholston blames Jets for his woes, saying Rex 'hindered' him

Didn't see this anywhere, two articles on ESPN

    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/6646/gholston-makes-return-to-the-meadowlands

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Vernon Gholston was back at the New Meadowlands Stadium on Monday night, but he didn’t dress in the home team locker room. After his new team's 41-13 loss to the Giants in a preseason game, Gholston -- the former Jet now playing defensive end for the Chicago Bears -- said Jets coach Rex Ryan had the wrong idea about him from the start.

“Rex made a comment to me when he first came in that he thought I wasn’t liked by the guys on the team,” Gholston said. “But once he got there he saw it was a different case, and those perceptions kind of weigh into, determine the outcome and it’s sad to say.”

Gholston said he had to leave the Jets if he wanted to be a better player. In March, the Jets cut him after three seasons without a single recorded sack.

“Personally I think it was a needed move for me, for my growth as a football player,” Gholston said. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to be as productive as I wanted to be as a football player, and sometimes that happens.”

The Jets drafted Gholston with the No. 6 overall pick in 2008 and signed him to a deal with $20 million in guaranteed money. Eric Mangini was the Jets' coach at the time, and moved the former Ohio State defensive end to outside linebacker. It didn’t go well, but Gholston said he was a team player about moving positions.

“They ask me to do that, that’s what I’m going to do,” Gholston said. “So whether I play a nose tackle, if they ask me to play safety one day, that’s what I’m going to do.”

When Ryan took over as coach in 2009, he made a point of saying he was going to get production out of Gholston. Yet Ryan took a few shots at Gholston in his book, “Play Like You Mean It.”

“He’s a good athlete and a smart guy,” Ryan wrote, “but I thought he was a phony.”

“I think it was out of context from what I heard,” Gholston said. “I’ve got no feelings toward it. If that's how he feels that’s how he feels.”

Gholston said he knew that Ryan didn’t have any loyalty towards him when the new coach arrived from Baltimore, soon to bring along a few of his favorite defensive players in linebacker Bart Scott and safety Jim Leonhard. But Gholston didn’t particularly have any love for Ryan at that point either.

“I wasn’t hoping for him to be the first coach of the Jets when I was there,” Gholston said.

Once they got to know each other, the relationship improved, but Gholston never became a force on the defense, no matter where the team had him play.

“If anything it maybe hindered me with the Jets because I’m such a team guy,” Gholston said. “I’m never going to be selfish about playing time, about where I’m playing, position, playing out of position or playing special teams so I’m going to take that attitude wherever I go and hopefully you get a coach that appreciates it.”

Gholston is happy to be with the Bears now, looking for a second chance. On Monday night he came in during the first half at end and recorded an assisted tackle. He said he has more to offer a team than he got to show with the Jets.

“With the NFL, teams are always looking for talent and to say I don’t have talent is a far stretch,” Gholston said. “It’s just all about getting like you guys said, a fair shot, time in the system. A lot of people don’t know when I was with the Jets over the past three years there was constant position change, coaching change, there was no stability.”

Asked if he got a fair shot with the Jets, Gholston didn’t give a yes or no.

“At the end of the day, being a first-round pick you would hope for more,” Gholston said. “But I’ve got no hard feelings toward anything. It was great playing for Rex and Mangini before him and being a Jet.”

If you tried, even a cursory glance you expended more effort than Gholston.

Rex took the high road by not slandering Vern. Kudos to Rex. The Jets players have not slandered Vern either. I would really like to know their true feelings on the subject. Vern is trying to sell something that very few are buying and will most likely be unemployed.

    Boo Hoo Vern, Boo Hoo!

I expected more from the Challenger, but it blew up in the beginning. Kind of like Vernon's career.
