I actually really like Early Doucet, he's not a FA is he? The guy had nearly as many yards as Cotch in only 10 games. Unlike Cotch he also had Red Skelton throwing him berr bottles in Arizona.

I'd be comfortable with 90% of those guys as our #3 receiver.

Even knowing they might have to become our #2 receiver? A healthy Steve Smith would be the only guy I'd consider on that list, and he's not healthy. Maybe Mark Clayton because he's a deep threat guy, but he's also coming off surgery that ended his season in week 4.

Will be annoying if they don't get mason after all of this, even tho the cotch thing started ages ago, it's just annoying that they don't have masons sig now. I like kerley by the sounds of things out of tc but they need another experienced head in there.

If TO is healthy, he's better than any guy on that list.

TO would be cool. tough in the slot vs other teams nickels for sure. I hope that's a real option.

Fewer than 90% of those guys are currently healthy.

I know that. ...and I know you know that Jerricho Cotchery isn't healthy either.

The poster that I was responding to was just throwing out a bunch of names, and I responded to that shitty post.

If Derrick Mason ends up somewhere else, we'll bring in a cheap veteran for insurance and that player will be an afterthought in our offense. Holmes, Keller, Burress, Kerley, and the backs will come before whoever signs instead of Mason.

Here's the bottom line: if Mason doesn't sign, we're going to sign a player that will have minimal production - maybe 30 to 35 receptions. This isn't a big hole...

After seeing him in person on tuesday and hearing what he has done early in camp i would be pretty comfortable with kerley in the slot. He has the skillset and he is getting a chance to build chemistry with Sanchez while plax and holmes have been watching on the sideline.

you have to figure someone else will be brought in but I think Kerley will become a fan favorite after a preseason game or two.

He stated that he is ready for practice. It's just no team has picked him up, but according to him he seems healthy

Also, while I agree we need to sign a receiver in case something happens to Plax, it's certainly not the end of the world for Kerley to man the slot from Day 1. Plenty of rookie receivers in the past two years have been able to compete in that role: Johnny Knox, Davone Bess, Jordan Shipley, Austin Collie (utilized by our new offensive consultant, no less), Mike Thomas, Brandon LaFell...

For a team that will likely see its #3 be the 5th target on the team, there are much worse things than penciling in and potentially starting a rookie who has impressed everyone so far in camp. If we're unable to sign someone before the Texans game, and Kerley occupies the slot, it wouldn't surprise me to see us stand pat for the time being.

EDIT: UKK beat me to it.

No. I realize that. I was just saying that I don't really care if our #3 receiver is any of those guys. I don't think a cheap vet for insurance is going to see 20 receptions. If he looks good in the preseason, I really think we'd start Kerley in the slot. That's not necessarily a bad move by any means.

    Well said.

The common rule has been give a receiver 3 years before they develop, but lately NFL rookie WRs have been producing right away.

    Kerley could be another.

Mostly in the slot, too. It's an easier position for a rookie to come into because of the frequent mismatches it can produce athletically. You don't have to rely on your slot guy to have fully developed route running and understand the nuances of the position. He's generally either going against a linebacker or a nickel corner, and those matchups are a lot easier to deal with.

Also, Kerley's not going to be matched up with top tier corners. He'll be against nickel and dime corners all season long.

That's why guys like Johnny Knox and Emmanuel Sanders did well as rookies.

Yeah, Emmanuel Sanders is another good example. I only left him off because of his copious PS and CFL time. Left Percy Harvin off because of his first round draft status.

Between Holmes, Plax, and Mason we are just pushing the limits of old age. I was under the impression teams wanted to get younger. No? well Wayne Chrebet and Don Maynard are free.... maybe next year!!!
