He is old and slow and his production has been going down, notwithstanding the great game he had in the playoffs vs the Pats. Let's not overpay for old guys based on sentimental value. It is a huge mistake. If we are scraping the bowl to find money to sign a starting CB, why blow money on an over the hill part time DE when we just drafted a slew of DL in the draft??? Sign Ellis to a one year low money contract ( $1 million) or let him walk. Let him be sentimental and want to stay to get the ring and retire as a Jet.

This is just an ignorant post.

Old, I'll give you. Slow? What kind of speed, exactly, are you expecting from a 3-4 defensive end? The Big Katt is actually one of the quicker ends you're likely to see in a 3-4 defense.

I'm going to repeat again that despite my respect for Shaun Ellis, sentimentality has nothing to do with my desire to resign him.

There seems to be a misconception that d-lines work the same way as o-lines: you get your five guys, and they stay in the game unless one of them gets injured. *ahem* THAT IS NOT THE WAY DEFENSIVE LINES WORK! You need a rotation of talented players on a defensive line. You can't just plug Muhammad Wilkerson in at LDE and call the position set. You need a large group of talented players to throw at the other team's offense, not just back-ups for the starters.

Let's also not forget that the "slew of DL" (I guess "slew" means "two") we drafted haven't even been fitted for their uniforms yet. We play the Texans in two weeks. Neither of these guys has played against anything near the level of competition they're about to face.

If Ellis is looking for 5 years, $25 million... yeah, he's going to have to find it elsewhere. But if we can get him back in a Jets uniform for around $3 million, it'll be the best $3 million we spend this year.

Experience and wisdom is premium in a short off-season. He deserves a lot more than that vet min you are talking about.

A lot more? No. 2 millions? Yeah. Remember he's worth more to us than any other team out there.

PS However I do feel like re-signing Pool would be more important to this team than re-signing Ellis...

    I'm in this camp.

In my opinion, Ellis is positively done. No mincing words: he was terrible last season in every game except the Pats game. And yes, that's the appropriate word.

I'm not even for keeping him at any price, to be honest. A decent vet off the scrap heap would be an upgrade based on what I saw from him. Guy's had a good career with the NYJ, but this is put up or shut up time. It's Super Bowl or bust.

Anyone saying the longest tenured player on the Jets only deserves a 1 million dollar contract is retarded.

The appropriate words for this comment would get me banned.

You don't know what you're talking about.

It's clear that we won't resolve this disagreement, and you're entitled to your opinion.

Wherever Ellis ends up, I'm curious to see what the terms are. If he comes to the Jets, I hope it's for a reasonable price-- though as I said, I'd rather not see him back at all.

Dude... "Shaun Ellis will be terrible this year" is an opinion. "Shaun Ellis was terrible last year" is a false statement. I appreciate your respectful response, but you're wrong.

How exactly was Shaun Ellis terrible? He had 5 sacks and was a regular on a front 7 that was one of the best in stopping the run last year.

He didn't have double digit sacks! Haven't you heard, that's what good defensive ends are supposed to do!

We need to trade for Dwight Freeney while we still have the chance.

the man still has football left in him. he's the last man standing as far as old time jets.

don't let him walk away on a sour note/sour kush

he def deserves more than the vet min. 2-2.5 mil sounds about right

He played very well as usual last season. I think he's been under appreciated his whole career. The guy is a ROCK. I hope he is re-signed.

lol, sour kush. It's summer, he's burning super fresh, just trimmed Norcal outdoor. I'm assuming he's prolly puffing on some big bud (the strain) or maybe some early pearl.

No wonder this country can't get anything done. Every discussion where opinions differ is preceded by an insult.

Ellis has been slowing down for years. Nobody expects him to have the speed of a pass rush specialist, but he has been getting slower for years, even for a 3-4 DE. Last year was by far his least productive year in terms of tackles, sacks and observation. I watch and re-watch every Jets game. He was just not much better than average or worse last year except for the tremendous game he had against NE. It is a young man's game and the Jets are trying to get younger on the DL. I'm not saying don't bring him back for the DL rotation ( and I know how DLs work ), but $3 million is ridiculous for a 34 year old part time end on a cap strapped team. Bring him back at $1-1.5 million. I think we can find much better places to spend $3 million. If sacks and tackles are not that important, then I am sure we can find a body at $1 million who can tie up blockers to free up the LBs to make plays.
