With Clemens gone, and Brunell expected to be cut, do you think it's safe to go with McElroy and O'Connell as backup QBs? I prefer to have some experience in that spot. However, the Jets obviously need all cap room possible to sign the many free agents still left from last year's team, and may not be able to spend 1.5 M or so on a backup QB. What are the options?
I feel like we have (or soon will have) a roster good enough to need a respectable backup QB... just in case... because we could still win. While Sanchez is an important team leader, his value over average QB is really not that huge.
Yeah i've been thinking about this also. I DO NOT want to be caught without a quality BU like when Vinny went down in game 1.We need a guy who actually has a few starts under his belt and is not 100 yo has been.
as much as it would be nice to have a reliable backup, i say let mcelroy and oconnell battle it at for the no. 2 spot... we need all the money we could scrape up to fill our other holes... especially if we land the guy were all waiting for
exactly. of course you would like a backup with experience.. anybody would... but who you gonna go with? Jake Delhomme? haha!
We can NOT make the same mistake we made in 1999. This team needs a solid backup QB. Not a star, just someone who doesn't make many mistakes.
I'd take JD as our back up in a heartbeat. I'd never want to see him in a game unless it's a blowout but the guy has the experience you want in a BU.
looking at the NFL.com FA tracker... there isnt much out there matt moore Marc bulger jake dellhome caleb hanie (the guy who almost brought chicago back in the NFCCG last year) chris simms troy smith billy volek just a few of the guys on the wire... just not much to get excited about. Bulger is probably the best bet I would think.
Is Brunell expected to be cut? I didn't see anything about that.. I figured they'd have him back for another year while they groom McElroy for the long term job.
Is Brunell expected to be cut? How could we do that without anyone to replace him. No way, even if we get someone to replace him, Mark would be around until the new guy learned the offense which means the whole year.
good point... i would expect him to hang around... its not like theres a high demand for him and what other choice do we have
Bulger or Volek from that list....... of course it depends on $$ and I'm sure Bulger would be looking for more, and a chance to compete for a starting spot.
This was my assumption. Even if we cut Brunell we could probably sign him back on another deal. I haven't read anything about his financial situation being resolved.
Brunell will be #2, and McElroy and O'Connell will fight for #3, Next year either McElroy or O'Connell will be #2.
When did this shit happen? I thought Brunell would be back for another season. Greg McElroy will be a hell of a backup quarterback once he learns the speed of this game.
I also assumed he would be cut and think I heard that as informed speculation. If Brunell stays at ower cost, that works for me.
