New York Jets linebacker David Harris signed his franchise tender Wednesday night, becoming the third player to do so in the past 24 hours, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley has signed his franchise tender. Panthers center Ryan Kalil has also signed his tender, a league source told Schefter. This comes at a time when the NFLPA has claimed the tags don't and won't exist. Harris' franchise number projects at between $10.1 and $10.5 million, depending on what the NFL determines, according to the source. Adam Schefter is ESPN's NFL Insider.
You have to assume that's exactly what will happen. the franchise is just to get him under contract, but no NFL player wants to play on a one year deal.
Yeah a $10 million cap hit for Harris is not a good look. Not when we have other players who need contracts.
Yes it is. I know optimists here think this is okay because they assume Harris will now proceed to sign a long term deal. But at what cost given this number going in? I think the Jet FO does a generally good to very good job. But they are not perfect. I question this price.
You understand that this is the only way they could prevent him from becoming a FA given the current CBA situation, right? Even Harris' agent spoke to this when the Jets tagged him and suggested they'd be working towards a long term deal. Harris will not be playing for that much next season. This is just a way to keep other teams from sniffing.
I think you're talking about them using a franchise tag and a transition tag, i.e. the Eagles and Steelers. Not sure if the Jets will be doing that, though.
harris should refuse a long term deal, take the $10M+ for one season, THEN get his long term deal. Kind of like he's playing for a big payday while making $10M. as long as he don't go leon and break a leg.....
It's a big risk but one that could pay out huge. How much GUARANTEED would he get in a long term? 22 mil? He can make almost half that by playing on this 1 year deal and then still get the 22 mil next offseason. I agree its tough to turn down the extra $12 mil guaranteed right now but I find the idea enticing.
I'm not predicting this will happen, but there is a real risk of it. Not sure where all the certainty about him signing a long term deal is coming from...
http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/jetsblog/jets_put_franchise_tag_on_harris_ELuqcj0GvXZ9DT3eynneCK Again, it's possible he could get more guaranteed money up front in a long term deal (bonus money) than the $10M he'd get for one year.
That's something totally different from the franchise and transition tag, what I thought you were talking about. The players need to be designated as RFA, and I believe the only player that we can place RFA tender on in 2011 is Rob Turner.
