At the end of last season, Drew Coleman outplayed him loads of times over. Given that Coleman has been the butt of many slaggings off and ridicule over the last 2/3 seasons, I'd say that its fair to level some of that at Wilson. Have I given up on him? No, not as a DB, but right now he has shown very very little to tell me hes an NFL calibre CB.
He has played 2 seasons with us already. You should probably know his name it isn't like he is riding the bench.
I thought Wilson improved alot by the end of last year. Well we can agree to disagree, but I would give the kid a shot and spend my free agent money on another position.
He did improve, but IMO not that much. He was put into situations where if he did Fuck up, it would be damage limitation. He will get his shot in TC and pre-season like everyone else, but my guess is that he will be in on nickel and dime packages only, like last season.
Yet another thing that sucks about the stupid lockout. He lost developmental time, and who knows if there will be enough for Rex and crew to really asses where he is at unless they throw him into the fire again. I'm still hopeful for the kid, but like you, I think it's too soon to declare him our #2.
For what it's worth, the lack of developmental time probably helps us relative to other teams. We had fewer rookies last year than most teams, so while we lost developmental time, we lost less because of it because we have a largely veteran squad. I'm sure the Pats would want Gronkowski, Hernandez, and whoever else was part of their rookie class to have had lots of time working with coaches too. Those guys are key contributors for them, who have had their development held back as result.
I think most here would agree thta for the team as a whole the lockout will hurt the Jets less than most teams. But the subject on this thread is #2 CB. And on that, the lockout has hurt the chances that Wilson will be ready to start. No great loss imo since I didn't think he would be anyway, but it would seem the argument the wishful thinkers and Cro Haters make here that Wilson will be ready seems that much more of a stretch. The Jets will either sign Cro or someone else to start. Bank on it.
Depending on free agency and where they land, I think largely that the 2011 season will be a continuation of the '10 season, which puts us in good stead.
Kyle Wilson will be alright. He had a lot to learn last season about speed and getting hands on receivers. Cro will be missed early on as Wilson will get picked on, but he will come on strong later in the year. He has the skills. The Jets invested a first rounder in him and they believed he would be good enough to start last season at #2.
The fact that a first round pick is spent on a player does not mean he is destined to start. Look at Gholston. Wilson showed nothign last year that he is capable of starting. The DB roster is weak enough after Revis and Cro. Wilson is not getting time in camp now, either, which also means the Jets are not seeing how far, if any, he has improved from last year's mediocre play. I love the wishful thinking/minimizing losing a quality player like Cro around here. Well, not really...
Wilson showed potential towards the end of the season last year. I think if he plays the sideline opposite Revis he will be okay. It seemed that he had trouble adapting to the speed of the game and the complexities of Rex's system. It may be wishful thinking but it's not outlandish to think a first rounder of his talent can not start on this team.
Losing Cro will set the secondary back a bit, no doubt. I don't expect Wilson in 2011 to equate to Cro in 2010. Even if he improves his play, he will be targeted a ton, and are depth will be lighter. We'll still need to sign another veteran. All that said, i think the Jets will lose both Cro and Edwards to higher offers. Its the nature of the cap, and its looking like Holmes may be the only big money guy we can squeeze in. Teams below the floor will start making silly offers, and we have a lot of roster spots to fill with limited cap space. Its a hit, but we'll be ok.
I think the defense will be fine if they add one of the Ravens CBs (F Washington, Carr, Wilson) to compete with Kyle Wilson.
I can't wait until Kyle Wilson shuts all you Jet player haters up! His coverage was spot on, his hip control was great, he just needed to work on ball awareness. I'm sure after a year under his belt combined with Revis training he will be worth his first round status. I have zero doubt in that.
