Smith sees the writing on the wall. He's unlikely to be back.. good player for us, but I think another team will make him a decent sized offer that the Jets won't be able to match. Nor should they, especially with the new kick off rules.
As much as I'd like to see him stay, I can't blame the guy if he leaves...... as a 4th rd pick, this may be his only real chance to really cash in (by pro sports standards)
Brad Smith has certainly been valuable but I cannot see him staying. Let's hope he doesn't end up with the Pasts.
I'm of two minds with Smith. 1) Sure, he deserves a decent deal as a quality "slash" player. 2) He's a "slash" player, and not a very mutli-dimensional one. Sure, the guy is exciting on kickoff returns, but then so was Justin Miller. You don't pay guys not named Devin Hester big money for being a kick returner. The Wildcat we run has grown stale, since obviously they don't trust him to throw the ball. I'd figure any of our RBs could do a reasonable job there at this point. I like Smith, and I would like to have him back. If he thinks he can get a better deal elsewhere though, that's great. I just don't see how a team is going to make him any offer much better than he would get from the Jets.
Fantastic special teams player, but useless as a receiver. However we did gain about 4 yards a pop whenever he ran the wildcat. Not sure that's worth the money some stupid team is willing to shell out for him though.
i'm in the camp that would love to have him on the team, but realizes he won't be. good for him, wish him the best, yadda yadda... ok. so everyone kinda has this mentality (well, mostly everyone.. and mostly those not needing medication) and i see the wildcat (gee i wonder why) mentioned often. Assuming we do lose Smith, what's people's take on using LDT as the Smith option in that format? i mean its not like we throw the ball from that format often, but if we do LDT has a few TD passes under his belt. i'm in no way saying he's a better passer than smith, as honestly i don't know. but i don't think its a terrible use... hell i'd prefer not to see the formation at all, but if we do, LDT makes the most sense methinks
If Smith was even a serviceable 3rd receiver then I'd say we have to keep him because the ability to leave him out on the field most of the game would force opposing teams to be prepared for the wildcat at all times and that would open up other parts of our offense (plus if we were able to get him the ball in the passing game he could be pretty dangerous after the catch), but the fact is he just isn't a good receiver and we are never able to get him the ball outside direct snaps. Thanks for the good times Smith, good luck on your next team.
The offense was one dimensional with smith....not that hes too valuable to lose but its gonna make the jets even more vanilla....might be a good thing?
I loved that the threat of the pass existed. Still don't believe they never did it, just to make the run more effective.
2 completions on 3 attempts and 1 TD pass last season. They only went for 6 yards, but I'd say that the threat of pass gave him more running room. Also, he isn't useless as a WR. I'm guessing his lack of WR opportunities stem from the coaches wishing to keep him fresh for Seminole and Special Teams plays while also reducing his mental prep. With our draft class, it is obvious that the Jets do not plan to bring him back. The Seminole role can be filled by LDT or perhaps another player, but we will definitely see it less next season without Brad Smith on the roster. Good luck, Brad! Brad Smith was on the field for 309 snaps last year, a majority of those snaps coming as a WR. He was targeted for 8 passes all season. He got his opportunities as a WR on this team, and yes he has been useless in that position.
