Maynard also said that he had Namath throwing to him. That is part of the equation that has to be included. Namath to Maynard! Joe with his rifle arm; quick release; great accuracy; and tremendous ability to read defenses throwing to a super quick; glue fingered receiver like Don who had great route running ability would be tough to stop. REVIS is great and he would make plays against Joe & Don but they would sting him also. That precise fire you speak of was also evident in Joe.
Actually Maynard was not known for being a great route-runner. He got by on improvisational skills. He was not a great receiver in a technical route-running sense like guys such as Jerry Rice and Raymond Berry and Marvin Harrison.
He "got by" with great speed and quickness. He also had great chemistry with his QB and were able to adjust routes where and when needed. The man is in the Hall of Fame, do you have an idea why?
WOW. You had a major reading comprehension issue there. I was writing specifically about his route-running. He was not a good route-runner. Therefore, he got by on improvising. It's one or the other, Kentucky Jet. There was no need to mention his speed, quickness, hands, the QBs, his sideburns, facemask, etc.
