http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/jets/jets_great_maynard_says_revis_couldn_TruCVzWM0i2ArT3ToY0jXI Don Maynard may have picked up a thing or two about trash talking from Rex Ryan. After hearing the current Jets head coach call Darrrelle Revis the greatest player in team history, the wide receiver told ESPN.com that he and Joe Namath would have done just fine, thanks, against the cornerback. "Oh, yeah," Maynard said. "It doesn't matter if it was him or anyone else. I had a guy named Namath throwing me the ball. If he goes left, I go right. If he goes right, I go left -- the ball would be there. And I've never been caught from behind. That's why my book is called, 'You Can't Catch Sunshine.' (Revis) is like Deion Sanders. I would've loved to have played against those guys." Ryan this week on NFL Network said of Revis, "One day we're gonna say that this is the best Jet in the history of the New York Jets." Maynard and Namath are the only two primarily Jets players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Running back Curtis Martin, likely headed to Canton at some point, actually agreed with Ryan about Revis. "As far as the best Jet ever, it's hands down (Revis)," Martin told the website. "Myself, Namath, Maynard, I don't think we were nearly as good at our positions as he is at his position. That's my honest opinion." Namath has not publicly commented on Ryan's statement. Ryan made his remarks as part of the NFL Network's countdown of the best 100 players of 2011. Revis is expected to land in the top 10, perhaps in the top five. Martin said Revis could become one of the greatest players in the history of the NFL. "It's too early to make this statement, but hypothetically, if he goes the next five years at the level he has displayed, when they do a top 100 of all-time -- not just this year -- he'll be in the top-five discussion," Martin said. Revis was drafted in 2007 and has been named to three Pro Bowls. He was runner-up for NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 (behind Packers cornerback Charles Woodson).
I'm confident that Revis could cover Maynard now. More seriously, I would hope that Maynard would feel that way, and would hope that Revis would feel the opposite. I'd say there's a very good chance that if Maynard got behind Revis he wouldn't be caught, but the question is whether he'd get behind him. Certainly the comparison with Deion doesn't seem too apt to me - Revis is plenty physical, something Deion never was. Obviously that would be the way Maynard would have to be played.
Players weren't in nearly as good shape in Maynard's day than they are now. That's pretty much all we know.
lol he had Namath throwing to him. That guys not even in my top 3 Jets QBs of all time. Like thats supposed to mean something to me
I was going to say something really sarcastic but really at this time of year Revis doesn't cover anyone, if he stopped short they would have to pull Geiger out by his ankles.
At the present time he is the only one in the HOF and more importantly the only one with a ring and that's all that matters. I don't know who you'd have better then Namath as we haven't exactly had Peyton Manning since #12's days. Hell we haven't even had a Warren Moon.
He probably would especially under 2011 rules. I just saw a poll on NFL Network for the best cornerback in the NFL. It was done by fan voting. 50% of the respondents voted Champ Bailey as the best cornerback in the league. Revis received 16% I believe. I only took a quick glance at the screen, so I may be off on the Revis number. Asomugha and I think Woodson were the other CBs in the poll.
thats really messed up that maynard said that. Come on man, its a differant era. Players sizes and skills have increased dramatically. Drew Coleman could cover Maynard like a blanket. Institute the 1960s rules where corners could mug the recievers and Maynard doesn't ever get off the line of scrimmage vs. Revis. maynard was awesome for his day. and Revis is awesome in his day. Let it be man
Well, if you're gonna compare players from different eras you should give them a fair chance... it's not getting Maynard into a deLorean and put him on the field. It's more like: if Maynard had born in this era how good would he be. Obviously he'd be "upgraded" physically (if he was big/fast enough to play back then, he should be bigger/faster so to be big/fast enough to play now) and technically (different training process). Or how would Revis be if he had 50s/60s diet and training. But the important thing is that Maynard's swagger would make him a perfect fit for today's jets.
