Interested to hear the thoughts of many of the draftniks here, on Wilkerson's upside and overall value, compared to how they viewed Odrick, this time last year. Odrick was obviously someone many of us wanted last tear, and like Wilkerson was a guy many viewed highly enough to potentially be a top 15 pick, but also slipped to later in the first round. Who was the better prospect, who has the better upside, who would you choose between the two given the choice, and who is the best fit for a Rex Ryan defense? Did we benefit from Odrick not making it to use last year, and then having Wilkerson fall in our laps this year?
This is an interesting question. I wanted Odrick last year, but I'm fine with the way things turned out.
Wilkerson's better. Odrick got a stock boost because of the last of 34 talent up top, Big Moo made it up to the same area despite a tremendous amount of 34 players. Wilkerson's got better athleticism and overall a much higher ceiling, though I think Odrick will be a good NFL player.
Fair to say Odrick is the safer of the two, more polished, more NFL ready, lower bust potential, but Wilk has the higher ceiling?
not to high jack, but how would he compare to the dt out of tenn who went to the cardinals one pick ahead of our wilson pick. Williams i think is his name?
i hated Odrick as a prospect. I felt he got pushed up boards because of a lack of real 3-4de's at the top last year. Wilkerson got drafted what 3 picks later, and was a projected to 11- Houston at one point in time... Locker and Ponder going where they did threw a wrench in the order of DL taken in round 1 and that pushed people right down to us. Wilkerson is a great pick, I won't lie I had him as my # 3 3-4 DE behind only Watt and Jordan. (Note: I never considered Dareus/Fairley as potential 3-4 DE's since neither was going to be drafted by a 3-4 team) So I really like him, adding in Ellis our DL is going to be set for a long freakin time.
I really liked Odrick, he was a better athlete than Mo. He also played a much better level of competion, so he was easier to gauge. I'd go with Odrick.
Combine drills are one way of looking at it. In-game agility is another. Wilkerson does a much better job of scraping down the line than Odrick, he's a better pass rusher than Odrick was and has better pass-rushing moves. His hips look generally more fluid and his body control seems to be better. Odrick's feet are faster that Wilkersons, I'll give him that, but I'm not sure where you're getting the running faster argument from. Wilkerson's high and low times at the Combine for the 40 were respectively 5.06 and 4.90 compared to Odrick's 5.14 and 4.93. Wilkerson's 20 yard dash was a 2.78 compared to Odrick's 2.90. Odrick beat out Wilkerson by a 1 second (1.72 to 1.73, respectively) in the 10 yard dash and had a better 3-cone - 7.22 to 7.31 - than Wilkerson which supports Odrick's better footwork coming out of college but Wilkerson and Odrick tied on the 20 yard shuttle so their ability to stop and reverse direction are worst the same. Wilkerson also had a 1-rep edge on Odrick in the bench press (27 to 26). So Odrick has the better feet in shorts but going back to Wilkerson's ability to move across the line it's clear that Wilkerson's strength and body control give him an advantage at least towards lateral movement with pads on.

Where's all the Wilson love coming from all of a sudden? Is it really clear Wilson is better than say Ras-I Dowling or Aaron Williams?
Not exactly. His Pro Day Numbers from National Football Post at the time(try this new thing called google). Odrick (6-5, 300) weighed in four pounds lighter on Wednesday than he did at the combine in Indianapolis last month. He stayed on his results from the combine in the bench press and three-cone drill, while posting a vertical jump of 30.0 and broad jump of 9-2. In addition, the 2009 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year told us he lowered his 40 time to an impressive 4.89 seconds-down from the high 4.9 to low 5.0 range he ran at the combine. Odrick also posted a short shuttle time of 4.44 seconds. Stop making me prove I'm right.lol
Id take wilson over Ras-I Dowling any and every day. Are you really going to rate a guy higher who is one of the most often injured players taken in this draft period ? Fact is the ceiling for Dowling is gonna him being the next Bob Sanders.
