I think our laws are pretty much the same here. If you have to defend yourself (from attack) you are allowed to use 'reasonable' force , to stop/prevent further attack. If he then went onto become the aggressor have the attacker is clearly incapacitated, then it might be a different matter. Sounds like the dude deserved it though.
I would think getting picked in an early round of the draft by the NYJ would be cause to get a significant upgrade in your legal team. Anyone know if the Jets can pay for the kids lawyer? To protect their investment of a draft pick? Maybe give the kid an advance of some cash to buy a real legal team to get the charges dropped or make a decent plea to end the speculation? Any jail time for this kid is not fair punishment for breaking someone's nose. Don't care about the circumstances. This will go away.
Cannizzaro FTW. I'm happy, even if it's a day or two late, that Cimini is being called out for his douchebaggery and unprofessionalism. I would hope ESPN would release some kind of statement of apology to Ellis and his family, but admitting some kind of mistake would go against their status quo. On a side note, I hope this Zimmerman reporter learned a thing or two in all this. She wasn't prepared for that presser one bit and her repetitive nature in her questions showed that. Took Cimini's bait and basically ran with it.
If Ellis is as bad as Cimini says he is. Cimini should have been smarter than to post his tweet, A 350 pound guy who disarms a guy with a bat and breaks his face is not a guy that I want to unfairly upset. Not that Cimini strikes me as that bright, just saying
Evan Roberts on Ellis- "Waste of a pick, this guy is going to jail" Yeah, Yeah, who the fuck cares what he thinks, he's a hack, he shouldn't be on the radio... I just can't believe how bad Beningo and Roberts are these days. They don't even do ANY research on stuff...they just open their mouths and spew crap all over the air.
From what I gather most radio guys do very little research of their own. They seem to just go based on what they hear on ESPN and such. It's kind of sad.
i love how out of proportion this is being blown. dont think tanny would be drafting a future prison inmate. a hatian who smoked weed at the age of 18? thats asinine seriously, the talk will stop when he starts commanding double teams
I would think under normal circumstances, it might be possible. But we can't even contact ellis, so there is no way we can give the guy a monetary advance to get the best lawyer possible. Freakin lockout... That said, I would think even a somewhat competent lawyer could handle this case if the the report is true about the kid coming at him with a bat... But its going to be a long two months of sweating on the Jets part. No matter how small the chance of jail time is, there will be some time spent worrying until he is officially cleared of any wrong doing.
Well it looks like Cannizzaro decided to get in on the fun of bringing up ancient history of our draftees. And oh boy, it's an exclusive. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/jets/teacher_draft_pick_scotty_mcknight_KzSb1LSt5I0dm7ErlTjgiI The Jets were heavily criticized this weekend for drafting two players with violent pasts when they picked Kenrick Ellis and Bilal Powell in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. But based on some violent, threatening words that Jets’ seventh-round pick Scotty McKnight wrote in a journal when he was in high school (nearly derailing his promising football career), you’d have thought the Jets drafted the next Charles Manson at receiver. Some chilling, gruesome passages McKnight wrote in that journal made Ellis, a Hampton nose tackle who has a July trial date for felony assault stemming from a fight he had a year ago, and Powell, a Louisville running back who was stabbed in a gang-related incident in high school, look like choirboys. NFL DRAFT: ALL THE PICKS McKnight, a former Colorado receiver and boyhood friend of Mark Sanchez, nearly got himself expelled during his senior year of high school in 2005 for penning some threatening words directed at his Tesoro (Calif.) High School English teacher in a journal that was supposed to be private, but became public. One of the entries McKnight and Tesoro teammate Sam Smith wrote referred to gluing the teacher naked to a wall, cutting off her feet and killing her family while she watches, according to court documents. "I am planning on coming in your room late one night while you’re still working," read one partial entry. "I will smother you in gasoline and light your head on fire ... " McKnight, reached last night in California by The Post, doesn’t deny writing those things, but vehemently said he and his friend challenged each other in a private prank, using outrageous word images. "It was an error in judgment that led to a huge consequence," McKnight told The Post. "I was 17 years old and had a class assignment to do some creative writing and the teacher told us for the first five minutes of class to write whatever you want, be creative and that no one was going ever to read it. "Me and a buddy wrote some crazy stuff, [Quentin] Tarantino-like movie type stuff and were trying to one-up each other, figuring no one was ever going to read it. It was a lack of judgment for sure, but we were 17 years old and not thinking — clearly." The English teacher, Alyssa Di Somma, read the journal and went to school superiors, saying she felt threatened. McKnight was suspended by the school while an investigation ensued and he missed the last eight games of his senior football season — drastically affecting his college career. "Here I am at 17 thinking I’m on top of the world and with one lack of judgment everything’s flipped," McKnight said. "Everything was going great. Schools were already talking to me, I committed to Boise State and all of a sudden there was a perception of maybe this kid is not a good character." Boise State eventually shied away from McKnight and his best choice was to walk on at Colorado, where he became a record-setting receiver. McKnight, who was with Sanchez when he was drafted on Sunday and was with him last night when he spoke to The Post, said he spoke about the incident with every team interested in drafting him, including the Jets. He called it "a misunderstanding," recalling that "someone in the school leaked the [story] to the media and it came out like ‘these kids made threats’ and made me sound like, ‘This guy is crazy.’ " "People that know me know that’s not me. I was 17 years old and had never been in trouble. I come from a family of police officers. My father is a lieutenant in Newport Beach and my grandfather and uncle are in the LAPD." McKnight, who is going to participate in Sanchez’ "Jets West" camp this week in California, called the entire incident "a learning experience that ultimately helped me get to where I am today." "You really see how one small error in judgment can affect your whole life," McKnight said. Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/jets...mcknight_KzSb1LSt5I0dm7ErlTjgiI#ixzz1LG8ZyRrz
Just because the JETS FO can't supply him a cash advance because of the lockout, doesn't mean his agent or "Joey bag of donuts" can't pay for the lawyer. He'll be just fine
Ellis is by far my favorite pick in this draft class. Watch the tape. We got an absolute steal, and we have these so-called "character concerns" to thank.
Great summary, but I'll do you one better: College kid gets into a fight. Oh noes!!!!!! A college kid fighting is unheard of! A football player fighting is just savage!!! Please. These people overhyping this are fags. Someone got his ass kicked and cried to the police. No story here.
This only tells me that Ellis was stronger or the dude was weak. At the end of the day, regardless of the end result, it was a fucking fight. I'm going to wager that most people here have been in a fight in their lifetime. Ellis's prosecution tells me more about the justice system in Virginia than the character of the man.
