With our 2 biggest needs now off the table, whats the most important need left to fill ? Safety, OLB, and WR all come to mind, but if we can only fill one tomorrow which should it be ? I know WR becomes significantly more/less of a need depending on what happens with Holmes, and theres less pressure on our OLBs now that our dline was addressed. But at the same time we do have 4 decent safeties, and at least 3 of them we KNOW are more than capable of starting. (but at the same time we have to resign 3 of them also) So biggest need you want to get filled tomorrow ? For me its easily OLB with hopes that we can trade up into the 4th and land Acho.
OLB is biggest need, followed by S and WR Problem is, OLB is thin and may not be worth drafting. I think we grab a DB in round 4. Get the impression that Rex isn't impressed by guys like Beal and Acho.
Well if we draft a safety this likely means either Pool or Smith are gone. And assuming the final 4 rules from last year go into place (and the fact that theyre both basically GUARANTEED to sign elsewhere after being Jets) this would allow us to pick up an UDFA. Obviously neither of them will land a large contract, but I think they could both get more than Feely did for us, in a year with a very weak safety draft class.
Can't really draft for need right now, but I really think that a few OLB and S prospects can come right in and contribute this year. Lots of good value at Saftey... rounds 3-5 are full of good ones. Hopefully the guys in charge feel the same way.
OLB was always our biggest need, along with DE. The Ellis pick was value. At this point, however, you take the best player within reason and ensure you're getting someone who can help the team. Given the available safety depth, that's probably where we go in Rd 4 unless someone like Acho falls.
31 other teams weren't impressed by Beal or Acho this round. Tomorrow could be a different story. Although, at this point I can also see Acho winning the 2011 TGG Gabe Watson Award for most coveted player the CS doesn't like.
I think OLB is the way to go. I am open to trading up for Acho and giving up a few of the later picks in the draft. It looks like they will be using the old rookie wage scale still and paying out to only three players would save cap space to get/retain a WR in FA.
I agree within reason. I think it would be pointless to take a RB, TE, or another DL at this point. There are still needs at several positions. I could see Tanny trading up in the 4th for a player he likes, or staying put and continuing to take the BPA. I'm hoping he won't trade up, as I'd like to see him address at least 2 of the 4 positions of need (OLB, WR, S & OL). I think they will probably try to get a S, WR, and OL help out of the last 4 picks. I’m not high on Sash, Sands or Carter at S. I don’t think any of those guys will be good in coverage, nor will Hagg from Nebraska, whom a number of people are high on. I’d rather have Deandre McDaniel in the 4th or Brian Lainhart in a later round. There's anotherk id, Mana Silva, that I like too. At WR, there is a need for depth anyway, even if both Edwards and Holmes come back. JCo is coming off of back surgery and even if Brad Smith is back, most people don’t like him as a receiver (and for good reason to date). Patrick Turner and Logan Payne aren’t gonna scare anyone. I like Greg Salas, Denarius Moore, Aldrick Robinson, and Jeremy Kerley. I also like Michael Galatas from Millsaps and Scotty McKnight. . As for the OL, Callahan knows the two prospects in the draft. He recruited them to Nebraska and coached them. There's also Willie Smith from ECU and some other good prospects. I’m not sure they’ll even take an OLB. I think they like Westermann a lot. They may surprise me and take Carter, Bruce Miller, the Beal kid from Oklahoma, or Ugo Chinesa, but at this point, I’m betting they don’t. I’m hoping: 1. they will get McDaniel at their pick in the 4th without having to trade up – if he’s gone, I hope they will take Carter, Miller or Beal if one is there; 2. they get Kerley, Salas, Moore, or Robinson (in that order) in the 5th; 3. an OL in the 6th; 4. in the 7th they get one of Gabe Miller, OLB; Malcolm Smith, ILB; Brian Lainhart, FS; Scotty McKnight, WR (Sanchez’ pal) or Michael Galatas kid from Millsaps. If they wind up getting an OLB in the 4th, then I hope they’re able to get the Lainhart kid in the 6th or 7th round. Even if they don’t get an OLB or S prospect in these last 4 rounds, I will be very, VERY happy with this draft. I think it has the potential already to be a franchise-defining and changing draft just as the 2006 draft was.
Maybe.. but that isn't necessarily true. If it's true that Ellis was 36th on their board, it's nearly impossible for another player to have better value than that when picking at 94. Rex might like one of them or both, just not as much as Ellis. If he does, I wouldn't rule out a trade up tomorrow. I would rather see an OLB tomorrow than a safety, but I wouldn't be unhappy with either one. I don't think WR is that big of a need because even if we lose Holmes or Braylon, I think we can fill that spot with a veteran receiver for a year and increase Keller's role in the passing game like weeks 1-4 last year.
While I agree that I dont think WR is a glaring need, you should keep in mind with the final 8 rules looking increasingly likely, that that would make it incredibly difficult for us to sign a veteran receiver. And after seeing how well the Pats/Ravens signing some vet receivers last year worked out (holt/Housh) that road seems a little scary to me. But i agree with the rest of your sentiment 100%. Get us a damn pass rusher and lets make em hurt
+1 Let's forget about biggest need. Rd 1/2 BPA with more need addressed with "common sense". The BPA that falls to the Jets should be selected. If it helps fill a depth need ..awesome. No 4th Round player is going to start from day 1 with our current roster. Draft the player that will give us depth, be a rotational player and contribute on teams.
