Always have been in the Edwards over Holmes camp. But the lord will help Holmes make his decisions regarding his future in the NFL (his twitter page, man LOVES god). ugh
Most football players are extremely religious. God and football go hand in hand where most players are from.
I wouldn't call what I'm seeing as Holmes hating exactly, but many of you are grossly discounting what he's done for the team. The Lions, Texans, and Browns games should be enough proof of what he's worth to this team. To continue Sanchez's development, the team should do whatever it can to keep both Braylon and Santonio. Hell, Sanchez struggled enough with BOTH on he team, so he hasn't yet advanced enough to make do with only one of them.
Fact is... The FA market is going to be littered with WR talent. A team like the Jets that is so backed up to the Salary cap should not be paying a WRtop dollar in the NFL.... The Jets need to find the perfect FA WR that will come in cheap and keep the offense going... If Braylon or Holmes want to be F'N NEW YORK JETS then come back to the team that gave you a shot and sign a reasonable deal.... Both these guys are also suspension risks... Too bad weed boy, your'e price must be discounted.
I'm not worried, he's trying to get as much money as he can- he's earned that right. I'm sure Tannenbaum can find a way to get this done eventually and I don't buy for a second he wouldn't sign the tender, he would have no choice if he wanted to play and make money.
who cares. saw this coming. the guy coins the phrase flight boys and everyone thinks he wants to retire a jet (not literally but its funny to see how personal some of the other posters take it) just like those before me i was one of the first in the Holmes VS Edwards thread to take Edwards hands down for A)asking price vs Holmes B)hes shown he wants to be here and be Sanchez' "go to guy" C)invaluable as a run blocker D)with sanchez being so hot cold i prefer someone with a bigger frame to give sanchez larger room for error on ball placement (how many times has edwards posted up and used his body perfectly to pull in a errant throw?) that being said yes Holmes is a true playmaker, but if a WR is gonna get the kind of money the market will set for him I would like them to have a more rounded skillset as a WR. if that makes any sense im not trying to devalue Holmes. and for gods sake either Keller is heating up in a game and not getting enough balls thrown his way or they highlight him in the playcalls and he doesnt show up big in tight spots. if we do lose Holmes (which we will) they need to pull up some of the Favre footage and figure out which looks and routes were making it happen cuz for all the lameness of Favres stay here he utilized Keller like a madden game. having a healthy Cotch come back up to #2 and getting Keller's production increased will be necessarry to begin offsetting the loss of him. i havent seen the FA WR's so i cant confidently say we can get a 5 to 6 td Slot guy.
Keller had career highs in recs, yds and TDs this past season. We had too many choices for the QB, none of our guys put up great #s but if we do lose Holmes or Edwards we'll see the #s go up for guys like Keller.
im speaking of how sporadic his output is. it was feast or famine last year for him. I think Keller has perennial pro bowl talent im just basically saying more consistency between him and sanchez will do this whole offense wonders(no brainer), and will be more than necessary once holmes is gone
Keller had a nice 4 game stretch w/ Favre but didn't do much the rest of the year. he was certainly more consistently invovled last year compared to his first 2 years. Keller has a chance to be a really good TE, he's been getting better every year. If we lose either Edwards or Holmes I expect Keller will have a big stat year, if nto I would expect his #s to go up but not significantly b/c we have so many weapons.
i think alot of that will have to do with Cotchery regaining form and who we fill the slot position with. any inconsistencies between the two and teams will be able to gameplan for Keller alot more
Cotch is huge in all of this, we need Cotch to be what he has always been for us in order to help absorb the blow of losing Edwards or Holmes.
Not really. VJax got the franchise tag. That leaves Sidney Rice, Holmes, Edwards, Malcom Floyd, and Steve Smith as the top WR options. Most of the other decent receivers, like James Jones, and 4/5 of the ones I just mentioned, could be RFAs if the 2010 rules are put in place. We could be left staring at Terrell Owens, TJ Houshmandzadeh, and Brian Finneran. You have a funny definition of "littered". What salary cap? There's no cap in place right now without a CBA. Do you know something we don't? See above. They'll sign for what they're willing to sign for. You don't get to decide whether they discount their price. The league dictates that. Worst post I've read all day.
AKA Healthy. I hope a lot of Cotch's problems this season are related to the injury. History tells us he'll be solid if he's healed up.
Which is why it's so absurd that he's opening his mouth about it. You'd think he'd want to be smart and play everything right with the questions swirling around him last season. Still, you're right that he'll sign. He doesn't have S&F for agents, and VJax taught everyone a lesson last season. I hope we go after Edwards first in either situation. Having 2010 rules would be better for the team as a whole, but it would complicate the process at WR.
but what's he supposed to do, just not answer the questions the media posed to him? it's funny... look at the work he's done off the field - with the sickle cell foundation and the athletes for africa work and there's no mention on this site (i check daily)... make a few straightforward comments, and get 6 pages devoted just to what a selfish "DB" he is... no one knows for sure what the family things are for sanche'z camp, do they? all speculation... does anyone know when sanchez's camp is? and it isn't a workout thing, as he's with tom shaw right now working out... both BE & him have their specific skill sets - I'm sure the JETS will make whatever smart decision they'll need... IF we have a season this year...
I am alittle confused why he would say what he said now, maybe it's part of the frustration of the unknown w/ the lockout? PR wise all he has to do is say he wants to be a Jet but these comments were odd.
i dunno if anybody explained this already, but holmes said 'he wont sign the tender' now if the tender is in effect for the 2011 season...what happens if he doesnt sign the tender? do we still hold his rights? doesnt he have no choice?
i dont think ppl (or sane ones) are calling him selfish. ppl know he thinks hes a top 3 wr and will demand more than hes worth especially in an offense that runs as much as we do. well his "family issues" are him taking up his second career as a wedding planner for his sister. its pretty disheartening he cant make it to a passing camp with a young qb whether or not hes under contract. ppl, especially fans like to see "acts of good faith". hes essentially made it clear hes going to the highest bidder and theres no need for him to work with sanchez and co. because of his uncertain future here. i dont feel like paying top dollar to someone whos a piss test away from missing a whole season. hes worth 7 mil/yr IMO. he'll prolly nab 9 plus a hefty signing bonus. if we wouldve won the SB we wouldve looked like geniuses and he'd prolly be more willing to work with us. his agent will use his late game heroics this yr to posture Tanny against a lower tier team looking to fill seats. which makes most of the hypothetical talk irrelevant
Yes. Or simply say "I don't know what's going on until the labor situation is settled." If someone pushes and says "Well, what if you're an RFA?" Then say, "I don't know until that happens." Call up his reps and tell them to get a fucking deal done that doesn't make him an RFA. They know the risk involved in trying to achieve this decision through the courts, and the indications seem to be that they're pushing for a court decision over mediation. Not selfish, stupid on this matter, or acting like he's planning to be elsewhere next season. Like I said, if he wants to be on a team that's going to use him differently, fine. That's obviously a reason not to go to passing camp. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for him not to attend if he's hoping to remain a Jet. I get the feeling he knows that we won't open the bank for him as much as another team will. As I said, if money is his top priority, then he should absolutely be seeking the best deal he possibly can. If the dust settles and it turns out he's an RFA, go to the team and let them know he doesn't intend to play under an RFA contract. Let Tanny try to negotiate a contract, or see what he's able to trade his rights for. Don't come out and say it months in advance when the FA situation is so uncertain. What does that accomplish? It sends a message to the team that signing him is going to be even more difficult. With the draft coming before FA, the team has to figure out HOW difficult that may be and take it into consideration when entering the draft. It may decide that it's not worth it to gamble on signing him, draft a slot receiver, and make a run at Edwards while Holmes has just diminished his trade value to the team. Yes, he's working out. He's staying in shape. My whole point was that if he has any intention of staying with the team, the wedding excuse that was given earlier is no reason not to take part in some of the camp. The liability issue is horseshit for a passing camp. The way he's going about this SEEMS (speculation speculation speculation acknowledged) like he doesn't have the same feelings for the Jets that the Jets have for him. And that's fine. It's a business. I'd sure as hell rather have the guy who brings a more diverse if less explosive skillset and said he's desperate to come back. Edwards also said he's not willing to play for a pittance, nor would he ever be expected to, but he hasn't done anything to make his return more difficult than it already is.
Bears mentioning as well that Holmes wouldn't possibly get through the season without a new contract if the RFA rules apply. We'd have plenty of extra cash with so many of our FAs returning, Harris and Holmes would get new contracts, and Cromartie would be the one year replacement. I can't figure out what he thinks he'd have to worry about.
