As the article states, part of the problem was attributable to the Revis holdout then injury, but also to the fact that Cromartie struggles over the middle and against quicker receivers. I look for this to improve in 2011 (if there is a season) whether Cro is here or not, but I think they'll improve more with Wilson or Champ Bailey or possibly even a lesser FA CB manning the #2 CB spot. I think this is a good reason the Jets should let Cro walk. We all know he isn't physical and can't tackle. We all know the Jets are vulnerable over the middle to TEs, RBs and on shorter routes for WRs. Hopefully, Wilson will be ready and up to the task.

I would like to see some type of statistical breakdown to confirm their claim about Revis and then Cromartie. Watching the games it sure felt like the slot CB and the safeties were the ones getting beat for those long 3rd downs.

"The Jets' sack totals actually jumped from 32 to 40, but the purpose of blitzing isn't simply to get to the quarterback. Instead, it is supposed to disrupt the offense's timing
and generate rushed throws that turn into incompletions or turnovers,
and that did not happen with enough regularity."

    This bears repeating.

Absolutely.. for much of the season 3rd and long meant seeing a guy break free across the middle with Eric Smith or Drew Coleman a few steps behind.

Revis only had like .75 total bad games. He was bad for a quarter against the Pats in the first game and was bad for the second half against the Vikings. He got beat a few times in the Denver game but Orton really made some fantastic throws in that game. And the TD he gave up shouldn't have counted.

I dislike how that article singles out Cro like that.... and implies that Revis was getting toasted early in the year. The 3rd down woes can be attributed to a lack of passrush, boom or bust blitzing, and occasional bad coverage from Coleman, Smith, Lowery, Leonhard, Cro and Pool.

That being said, I'm fine with all of our DBs. If the QB has all day to throw, somebody will get open. We need passrushers.

I don't really agree with his assessment on the CB2 position.

Lack of pass rush, some horrible penalties (like 5 yd holding on 3rd and 30 which results in 1st down), safeties/LB's getting beat in coverage, and occassionally getting beat at CB2 was what i saw.

Cro was up and down all season IMO. He had quite a few games where he was abused. That's why I'm a fan of getting Aso.

    QFT.

Cro gave up 7 TDs for the year which is still damn good for the #2 CB on any team and a decent year for most #1 CBs.

I thought the same thing about Cro. I dunno if we have to spend the $$$ to get Aso, but I don't think Cro should get #1 CB money either.

In the playoffs, the Jets went to more coverage packages and a three man rush with success, especially against Indy and NE. And because of the coverage, they got pressure on the QB. I'd expect to see more of that next year.

OK, well first off, Champ Bailey will not be a Jet. And Cromartie doesn't just struggle with routes over the middle, he has a hard time with shifty receivers on any short/medium route and it's primarily because he doesn't use his hands when he can. He uses them at crunch time though and it often draws flags.

I think that article is accurate but they don't mention the fact that we have a hard time pressure a QB without blitzing. Rex talks up our CBs and says it allows us more flexiblity in the blitz game, but maybe the fact is that he's not jsut sending all that pressure because he is confident in the CBs, he's sending it because he knows it's the only way we can get there.

There had to be a reason why, after the first quarter, we weren't able to assign someone to spy Ben in the AFCC. I believe it is because, in order to get him on the run, we had to send the would-be spy as a pressure guy.

It's amazing we got as far as we got with how shitty we play...

It may be "fitting" that the Jets season ended on that 3rd down play, but that game was lost in the first half.

I think Cromartie was average in coverage. This defense needs better than average at the CB positions. Also he can't tackle - he does'nt like to mix it up and run up and tackle a running back - it aint going to happen. For Cromatrie to be effective he needs to be on a team that pressures the opposing QB into alot of forced throws so he can look spectacular and intercept them. Cromartie needs to be way above average in coverage to be effective as a Jet and he was not.

I'm sure if we analyzed other teams' seasons you'd find the NYJ are as good as advertised. Every team has issues that need to be adressed.

    I disagree.

I think that is mediocre, and that is being nice.

The year before without Cro I don't think we gave up 7 passing TDs as a TEAM.

(Disclaimer: I am by no means blaming everything on Cro, I am also a firm believer in that Kerry Rhodes leaving left a coverage hole in the middle of the field)

I'd agree re: Rhodes if he hadn't been awful in coverage throughout 2009 here and 2010 in Arizona. That's a misconception.

Of course..I was referring to the inability to stop 3rd & longs this year as opposed to 2009. That's a serious "issue" that never got addressed.

But really....are the Jets "as good as advertised?"

Watch the last game and get back to me.
