No but they sould be closer to Jerry Rice than Wayne Chrebet. Tjhere are a ton of players who do not belong in the Hall, the Hall should only be for the best of the best not guys who were really good.
Agreed, all I am saying is that if they are clearly in that top 1% of players they should not have to wait a year to get in. Are you guys saying that Curtis is not clearly a HOF player? He is the 4th all time leading rusher all the rest of the top ten before this year got in on their first ballot.
If he were voted in as a first ballot, he would be a guy that people point to as an example of someone not deserving of a first ballot (like they do with Warren Moon or Marcus Allen). There is no shame with being a guy who gets in in his second or third year of eligibility (like Namath, Page, Randle, Riggins, Thomas, Winslow, Youngblood, Biletnikoff, etc).
I see that as slitting hairs, Does Allen deserve to be in the HOF? if so I have no problem him being a "first ballot" if it was a question as to weather he got in at all then I agree with taking time on him. But if the player is a obvious HOF then that is distintion enough. As for the other guys most of them got screwed by having to wait. and just because someone got screwed in the past does not make it right to screw the next guy IMO It's easier with stat players like RB and WR and QB if they have the stats then they should be in.
I'm just disgusted with everything NFL right now, ever since the Jets lost that game. Curtis gets snubbed for the Hall, two meathead teams in the Super Bowl, we don't even know if they can get their shit together for a season next year. I haven't even watched NFL Network, fuck that. Pretty much watching the Knicks, seeing if the Devils can pull off a miracle and how many games Seton Hall can blow against top 10 teams. Sour grapes? Yes. Fuck it.
I don't think I said that all HOF's were the exact same just that if they are obvious HOF they should not be made to wait a year because they were not "Jerry rice". I am surprised most here think Curtis should have to wait even though he is an obvious HOF player.
How are they getting screwed? The only guys that have issues are boarderline HOFers. The way the Pro Football HOF works is great, because only the very best get in and only the super-elite are first ballott. As much as I love CM, he is not on-par with M. Faulk and D. Sanders.
There is a noticeable distinction between first ballot HOF guys and non-first ballot guys. The NFL HOF chooses to recognize that distinction, and many believe it's a good way to do it. I don't know why you're so offended by the HOF making that distinction for a select few elite of the elite players. Curtis Martin will almost certainly be in next year.
I'm just bitter because I think Curtis should have been one of those guys. No biggie. So I am attacking the distintion that the NFL HOF election committe is making.
How is he not on par with them (and don't tell me Super Bowls)? Most people in the media agree that Curtis is a first ballot guy. Him not getting in with his stats is actually unprecedented. Timing this year was certainly not in his favor, but he still should have got in along with Faulk. I'm amazed at how many Jet fans do not recognize this. I'm not just speaking Green.... Also just found out the Jets don't have a beat writer representing them in the voting, where essentially every other team does. Why am i not surprised?
You've got to be kidding. Deion Sanders was the premier cover cornerback in the NFL for 10 years. He was Revis before Revis....plus he was an electric return man. Faulk was perhaps the most dynamic all purpose back in the history of the NFL. Your comment that "most people in the media agree that Curtis is a first ballot guy" is completely unfounded. I've even heard more than one radio guy say the Martin belongs in the "Hall of Very Good", not the "Hall of Fame". To be clear, I 100% disagree. He is a lock to be a HOFer. If he were a slam dunk first ballot guy, then not having a Jets beat reporter as a voter wouldn't matter.
I think Jackie Slater might be the weakest 1st ballot inductee. He was a very good right tackle for a long time. He played 20 seasons, but the 20th consisted of only 1 game. I never thought he was great. He's like the Don Sutton or Bert Blyleven of the NFL- very good for a long time, but maybe never really great. Even the class he went in with was weird. We always hear how the selectors try to not take multiple guys from the same position. Well, Slater was inducted with two other linemen (Mike Munchak and Ron Yary). No offensive linemen were selected the year prior to or the year after Slater's class. I just don't understand why Slater had to be inducted on the 1st ballot. He should have been inducted in 2002 instead of 2001. You've already made plans? I'm going to strongly consider going there, too.
Given that offensive linemen are generally given scant consideration by the HOF voters, Slater getting a break is OK by me. Maybe there is hope for Mawae.
Mawae was a better player than Slater, in my opinion. Roaf was better than Slater, too, and look at him- he has to wait at least another year.
I made the "when Curtis gets inducted I'm going to be there" plans. But if he had been selected this year I wouldn't have been able to make it because I'm going to be in Hawaii that week. If he gets selected next year and you think you'll go we'll have to meet up. This will be my 3rd trip to Canton. I love it there as I know you will too.
