ARLINGTON, Texas — What a strange trip it has been for Howard Green. Green spent the better part of the last two seasons as a 350-pound yo-yo. He signed with the Jets, got released, signed on again and was cut again. Now Green finds himself playing for a Super Bowl title this week as a defensive tackle for the Packers, who signed him almost as soon as the Jets released him in October. Green recalled driving from New Jersey to his home in Louisiana after being released, feeling down and a bit ticked off Jets coach Rex Ryan, who professed to being such a supporter of his, cut him. But then his phone rang, and it opened an unexpected door to perhaps the most thrilling chapter of his life. “I hadn’t made it home yet,” Green said yesterday. “I was driving from Jersey to Louisiana and right as I crossed the Louisiana state line my phone rang.” It was the Packers, who wanted him in Green Bay as soon as possible. Green, who said he never made it home, went to the New Orleans airport and flew to Atlanta, where he was stuck overnight. From there, he flew to Chicago and didn’t make the next day’s Packers practice in time. “It was a wild trip,” he said. Days later, playing with his sixth team in his sixth NFL season, Green played with the Packers against the Jets at the Meadowlands, where he made a key play, stuffing Jerricho Cotchery for a loss in a 9-0 Green Bay win. “I had a lot of mixed emotions in that game,” Green said. “I was mad, of course, and I had a lot of stuff I wanted to let out.” So he did. “Rex knows I can play,” he said. “They had their reasons why. I can’t knock them. They gave me an opportunity to play and be a part of what they were doing. I appreciated that. Rex is a good man. I love him. He’s always going to be one of my favorite coaches. It was time to move on.” Now Green has moved on to bigger and better things. His ultimate revenge for being released will be to show his former team his shiny Super Bowl ring.
From watching a lot of the Packer games, i noticed Green plays a big role against teams that run the ball well. I expect to see him on the field quite a bit in the SB, and making an impact.
Have to agree there. When we cut him I asked why? the guy was more than serviceable, he'd actually make a few plays here and there.
Green was pretty good for us in 2009 in rotation with Devito and Pouha. He got caught in the numbers games unfortunately. We needed more defensive backs than we needed defensive linemen.
One more reason to root for GB to destroy those fucking Steelers. This guy has been through a lot in his career, I'd be happy for him to get a SB ring.
The Packers D-line has gotten a ton of injuries from mid to late season and Green actually has started most of the games he's played in as a Packer.
Fringe players like Green and Woodheadhappen to get picked up by other teams out of necessity. Nobody wanted them prior to injury problems. They happen to play well and make the most of their opportunities. Good for them.
EXACTLY what Johnny English said; ".........When the Jets played the Packers on Halloween, FOX's Tony Siragusa reported during the broadcast that Green had been cut for returning after the bye week 15 pounds overweight. Asked if that was the reason he was given, Green said, "something like that, but that wasn't all true." He declined to explain further, though he did admit the move was disheartening. "A lot of mixed emotions," Green recalled. "I just was there a few days ago, and now you're on the other side of the locker room as a visitor. ... I was mad of course; I had a lot of stuff. You just want to go out there and just let it out..." (From nj.com-sports dated 2/1/11 -NY Jets beat writer, Jenny Vrentas of the Star Ledger)
We coulda used him on the 4th & 1 in Philly. Give him the ball and tell him there's a cheeseburger in the endzone.
Good luck to him im hoping for the best to him and his team against the steelers this week, besides I think its time for aaron rosters to step out from the shadows of Brett Farve anyway. Only for this week......... let's go Packers!!!
