Wow, it seems my general perception of player size is totally warped. I thought James Harrison was bigger than he is; he's listed at 6'0, 242lbs.
Ther is NO WAY Bart Scott is let go... 1) Rex loves him. 2) His contract numbers in 2011 & 2012 are reasonable (6.65 and 7.35 respectively). We can start talking about saying goodbye to Scott in 2013. http://www.nyjetscap.com/bartscott.html
The only reason I brought him up was that he was the only player I saw on our roster that would have trade value and doesn't have a stupid dead money number. If he could be replaced reasonably well with another FA and we could pickup a good pick (2nd/3rd) for him I'd be all for it. We don't need him to teach the defense anymore.
Meh... to me he is the heart and soul of our D in terms of setting the tone... I understand your opinion but I can't imagine a Jets D without Scott... Plus Scott thrives under Rex... I can't see him play the same without Rex.
To me it's simple, the majority of our picks in this year's draft MUST be dedicated to the defensive front 7 (And in particular, the defensive End and OLB positions)
Taking a DE/NT and an OLB with our first two picks is a must... I'm hoping Steven Friday drops to our pick in rd 3...
^^^ This. Scott brings the attitude to the defense that Rex wants. He leads them in passion and makes big plays inside to get Harris free. You don;t show up at a guys house at 12:15 am to sign him, get exactly waht you expected and then cut him two years later. Scott is going no where.
as for FA does the same final 4 rule apply to us this year as last year or are all bets off until they come to some agreement?
I want an elite OLB in the first round. Sheard or Beal will hopefully be there at 30. DE we can let slide until the third unless someone like Watt or Jordan falls. I don't see the top end of DE talent being there at 30, though. The top end is deep but the rest is 3rd round talent or lower. At this point, I think we have to hope for a successful tag-and-trade of one of our departing FAs, provided there is a new CBA.
That would be nice. I'm trying to remember an instance of that happening in the NFL. Is it a normal occurrence?
Not too often but Holmes or Edwards could garner some interest, maybe enough for a 2nd, probably a 3rd. I'd like to see Cro get us something back but I think most franchises are reading Tannenbaum's comments about him the same way we are; that we don't want him back. Matt Cassel was the last player I can remember to receive that treatment and got the Patriots a 2nd rounder, although he was supposed to be a franchise QB in the eyes of the Chiefs. It's up in the air as to what we can get for them, but given their franchise status, I don't think it'll be too difficult to pull off a 2nd or 3rd.
Jets did this with John Abraham in 2006. Tagged him and traded him for a first round pick that became Nick Mangold. The problem is that which of our 4 big free agents would bring back a pick plus a huge contract? Other then Harris the other 3 free agents are very risky to give big contracts too. Holmes- 1 piss test from a year long suspension, has a long list of off the field issues. Braylon- 2 good seasons in 6 years. He's proven this year he's a team player but does anyone think he would be such a good team guy on a bad team? DWI/problems in Cleveland. Cromatie- Really has some flaws in his game, penalties, doesn't like to tackle. He's clearly not an elite shutdown corner so what is his value in the open market? Giving a long term deal to any of these guys is a risky decision.
To make a comparison, Brandon Marshall was traded for 2 #2's last year and then given a big long term deal. He has similar concerns. He's a better receiver than either of our guys, but they're both very good.
If we can't trade anyone we could still get a compensatory pick in 2012 (if they'll continue to exist)... that is provided Tanny keeps himself under control in the FA market... I would not mind one bit to have an extra #3 in 2012.
I would take 1 second round pick for either of them and be very happy. I would prefer to sign Harris and Braylon and tag Santonio.
That would be my preference as well, but I'd like to see Cro stay. Maybe we could get a 2nd and a 3rd for Holmes, then trade #30 for 2 2nd rounders. I'm not sure what the 2nd round of the draft looks like for 3-4 front 7, but if we could get 3 good 3-4 prospects in there I'd be stoked.
Holmes problem was never the talent but the off the field stuff... one quiet (contract) season isn't going to make his value jump from a 5th rder to a 2nd rder alone... a 2nd + 3rd is a joke! #30 is Coleman, I assume you're talking about #31 Cromartie... and again 2 2nd rounders is ridicolous. We'd be lucky to get a low 2nd. VERY lucky. As much as a headcase Marshall is he was coming off 3 consecutive +100 catches... that's amazing!!! And he didn't have many (if at all) legal problems... he was/is only a bit of a shit head... but that's not a crime yet... Holmes is one failed test away from missing a whole year. BTW One player I'd really like to trade is Jim Leonhard... I know everyone loves him but I feel much more comfortable with Lowery + Pool + E. Smith rotating back there and I feel he's expendable... it would be great to get a 3rd or maybe even a high 4th rounder for him.
