http://www.thejetsblog.com/2011/01/26/new-york-denies-oakland-permission-to-speak-with-thurman/ This seems like a dick move to not give Thurman the opportunity to advance. The only thing that makes sense to me is that they're expecting someone to take a look at Pettine for HC and want Thurman for their own DC?
I thought another team could interview and sign your coach away from you as long as he gets a higher title? I guess not.
We don't know the inside scoop but its also possible that they gave Thurmann the opportunity and he wasn't interested so they denied.
Mike Tannenbaum: "Dennis, Oakland want to talk to you about being their defensive co-ordinator. You interested?" Dennis Thurman: "What, the Oakland that are shopping their best defensive talent?" MT: "Yes, that Oakland." DT: "Is Crazy Al dead yet?" MT: "No, not last I heard." DT: "Tell them you won't let me speak to them, that way I don't have to look unambitious by turning it down myself without even talking to them." MT: "Hello Hue? Sorry, we're not letting him go right now."
Thurman may of not wanted to go, so he told the team to deny the interview. who knows. also yes pettine may be getting looks, so Thurman could be next in line.
I agree with all you guys, Thurman probably said hell no to Oakland so just asked the jets to deny them....Nice to see the coaches at least will stay here even if there is better money else where.
Pretty sure that only goes for head coaches. Jay Glazer tweeted something along the lines of this doesn't bother Thurman because he loves working with Rex. Don't think it's that big of a deal.
Oakland knew the Jets would not allow the interview...the Jets and Al Davis HATE each other. You guys know that the Raiders complex has several big-sized photos of Ben Davidson breaking Joe Namath's jaw, right?
I had a hunch Hue Jackson would come sniffing around our coaching staff.....he's got a history with Baltimore along with Rex. Let's hope Oakland's reputation for being a shithole is enough to keep our coaching staff from defecting.
^ i almost threw up watching that......his hands are seriously fucked up. Al Davis looks like he's in the early stages of leprosy
Davidson was a dirty piece of crap, like many Raiders, but he never broke Namath's jaw - that was Ike Lassiter (it was actually his cheekbone). There is a well-known picture of Davidson knocking Namath's helmet off on a late hit (in the same 1967 game, as a matter of fact), and that's the picture that was up at the Raiders' complex (might still be, for all I know). Edit: here is the picture.
Im more curious if we denied access simply because we have a poor history with the Raiders, or if it was purely out of retaining him.
