Lets see what is wrong with Schotty..... 1) The goal line stance as you said. The 1st and 2nd down calls....I can live with it. That is fine. 3rd down having Sanchez try the same play is almost ridiculous and we got lucky to not be picked off there. 4th down is inexcusable however....Greene has had 3 solid runs of 3+ yards per....and we needed 2 yds. So what does Schotty do? Run LT in need of 2 yards. Now running on the Pit D is no gimmie at all but Greene carries the pile....LT does not carry people. 2) The 4th quarter execution...some of it does fall on Sanchez(The broken play that almost got Mangold killed for instance) but to constant go and dink and dunk was playing into PIT's hands of killing time. LeBeau set it up exactly like that to let NYJ get little yards to just burn the clock to not get the Steelers offense back up.
I'm sorry but this the second time you've misread what I wrote. Rex always defers to the 2nd half which improves the chances that we're down in the first quarter. Hence, "why aren't you mad at Rex?" As to the point you just made, the defense let the Steelers take around 21 minutes off the clock in the first half, thus making us having to play from behind against one of the top defenses. The defense was terrible today. Rex and Pettine deserve some blame. But most of the blame should be on the front seven and the special teams.
You win by scoring more points. Yea, we improved in scoring overall but how have those scores come? We're not getting TDs early and we're failing to do so on a consistent basis which means the offense has problems getting into a rhythm early. That's leading to a lot of situations where the Jets have to come from behind later in games. I love the fact that the team can do it, I hate the fact that so often they have to do it. No one is saying the defense isn't at fault, either. Most of the draft forum is dedicated to discussions on adding to the defense because it needs help. This is a thread for the offense, which also needs help. We have a lot of pieces on this team, eventually departing FAs notwithstanding, to get the job done. The biggest problem with the offense has been the play calling. The play calling needs to change and since we're seeing the same flaws we have been seeing since Schottenheimer got here fiver years ago, it's unlikely they're going to change keeping him on the CS. He has been instrumental in Sanchez's development on the practice field but on the playing field he's been Sanchez's biggest detriment. I'm not going to pile on the hate and say that just getting rid of Schottenheimer will solve everything but keeping him around won't give us an improvement.
I understand what you mean by Rex liking to defer, I'm sorry for not addressing it. Rex Ryan likes when his team plays defense so he will defer. Not scoring in the first quarter is not why we lost today, and yes, I am pretty pissed. Why we lost today falls on the inability to punch it in for 7 when we were competitive in the 2nd half. As i'm trying to point out to #1 Jets Fan in his thread, Schottenheimer left points on the field while the defense was pitching a 2nd half shut out and the offense was one good call away from setting up to tie instead of losing by 5. This is why our beloved game has half time. The 2nd half is what counts, as you've stated. TODAY, we lost in the 2nd half, the only half we showed up for. Rex worked the defense out in the locker room, clearly, but no, Sanchez and Schotty never should have been asked to overcome a 24 point deficit. The fact is, they were in a position to, and failed.
REALLY?? WOW!!! 15 games in a row without an offensive TD in the 1st quarter and you downplay it?? That's week 5 through now. FG's are cool. Td's are 4 more points. You know that right?
I think you're overreacting badly to one game. Pittsburg has one of the best defenses in the league, and we played them at their place in below freezing temperature. You're not giving any credit to the Steelers, who will probably win the Superbowl. The offense did take a while to get in rhythm, but they did put up points and move the ball. Again, we were 11th in scoring this year, and Sanchez played much better in the playoffs. Considering that we played on the road, against 3 of the best QB's in the league, it's a major accomplishment. The end-around was a terrible call because it has never worked for us before: like that time in Cincinatti where Brad Smith scored a touchdown... oh wait. If a play works, it's good, but when it doesn't work it's cute. I get it now. We don't get away from the running game too quickly. We had the 2nd highest rushing attempts in the league. Tomlinson has been the goal line guy all year. I would of rather had Greene in there, but you weren't complaining when Tomlinson scored all those touchdowns in the regular season were you? That whole goal line series was a debacle, and it's looking like they had some equipment malfunctions that really hurt the play calling.
If Tomlinson was handed the ball 4 times on the goal line instead of one pass being batted down and 3 other slap dick plays, he gets in.
Really?? 11th in scoring? Awesome. 10 teams out of 32 (nearly 33%...or almost 1/3 of the entire league) are better than us. We should be proud of that?
LT minus 1 run had done absolutely nothing in the game though. Greene at least showed life, especially that huge run. He should have been rewarded when it came to the time. Its like when Greene does something good, he never gets a chance to build off that.....
The 2 plays on the goal line I understand getting upset about, but the offense was moving the ball well in the 2nd half. If the defense didn't screw up in the first half, and actually got a stop with 3 minutes and 3 timeouts left, the offense had a shot to win the game.
Because LT bitched whenever Greene got a carry. I think the best example was in the Indy game, or maybe it was still regular season, but there was footage of LT on the sidelines mad he wasn't the one running 35 yard break out runs.
Do you know why the phrase "Stats are for losers" exists? Because 11th in Scoring means less than nothing in regard to the playcalling failure at the most crucial moment inside the 3-yard-line that occurred tonight.
Bro, Even though the defense screwed up the first half, the offense had a chance to win the game. That drive lost the game. It was the final nail in the coffin. Schotty failed to deliver. Obviously we're not going to agree on this no matter how hard we argue. I agree to disagree with you. At the moment, most voters also would agree to disagree.
Meh who cares what LT thinks. He knew what he was getting into when he came to NYJ and that was to be used behind Greene. Boldin was whining during the NFC Champ game with Arizona a few years ago when Warner and Haley would go with Breaston on some plays...and ya know they went to the super bowl no matter how angry Boldin might have been.
Pittsburgh is a defense we need to beat to get to the Super Bowl. We cannot brush off underperforming against them as an excuse. If the offense doesn't get better, we're not getting over this hurdle.
The biggest problem with the offense has been Sanchez this year. We had to cut back the offense time and time again because it was too complicated for him. That's to be expected from a 2nd year quarterback. I don't see how you can't see that. Schotty does call some questionable plays every game, but for the most part he calls good games. And you think keeping him around won't improve the offense? We went from 20-something last year in scoring to 11th this year. Sanchez has also improved a lot. I'd say the offense is improving.
If Sanchez is the problem, despite the poor calling, why did he have such a statistically good game last night?
