I am all for LDT. He did a hell of a job this year, his leadership was incomparable. I am sad we didn't win him a ring this year. He's a great check down back and got us a first down many times when we needed a big one. Maybe, we wore him out a little to early on in the season but if he wants to play one more season then I'm all for it.
Rex said it himself, One day we'll have a great 1-2-3 punch with LT, Greene and McKnight(paraphrased). I'm all for keeping Tomlinson around for one more year. Although if we do let him go, we better pick up another RB that can go between the tackles.
I don't mind LT coming back, as long as it is in a supporting role. Greene has to be the No. 1 back. Use Joe McKnight (if he really is ready for prime time and comes into camp in shape, ready to play, etc.) and LT as change of pace, catching passes out of the backfield types. Also, Tony Richardson is not coming back next year. LT was a good citizen and leader here. He seems like a good veteran fit for the backfield next year.
I feel that Greene and LT's lack of speed forces us to run between the tackles. Although it's foolish to run outside towards Woodley and Harrison, it would have helped to diversify the play-calling. In the future, I would like to see Mcknight get some runs to the outside. If not Mcknight, we need to draft a speed running back like Noel Devine.
I think we'd all feel a lot better about LT if we had an OC that could call plays intelligently and use him and he should have been used - catching balls out of the backfield and running out of spread formations. It's not LT's fault that he doesn't gain yardage when you pound him up the middle on running downs, that's now how he should be used.
I see no reason to drop LT next year. Let Greene be the main back and LT the 3rd down back or whatever.. work McKnight in however possible. But what does it matter with Shittenheimer calling the plays?
It's not that cheap. He makes what like 2.5 million? That's 2.5 million on the cap that can be used towards bringing back our big time FAs
He signed with the Jets with no promise of what his playing time would be. All they gave him was a chance to compete for playing time.
I would lose LT. I'd go with Greene and McKnight. I like LT, but this was the year. We didn't win. Cut our losses and move on.
i dont know why he said it in that manner. is he ready to retire or wants to jump on another team to chase that ring? not like we didn't give him a chance to win and succeed :shrugs:
He said it like that because he doesn't know if the Jets are going to want him back next year. That was fairly obvious.
