How much ram does it have? I know some of the new ones are sitting on 8G plus. I'm running 7 on my laptop with 8G ram now. I assume you have at least 4G capabilities. I would make sure your HW is compatible with Windows7.
Ok so I did a system default on my laptop since I acquired some trojans and viruses that fucked my computer. In the process I lost my current Webroot anti-virus. Wondering if one can suggest a free anti-virus program/malware protection so I can get rid of the "X Shield" in Windows Security Alerts on the bottom right of my computer. Thankyou.
www.Malwarebytes.com for starters. Once that's done, you can run Microsoft Essentials as a free AV to clean things up even more. Then run CCleaner to get it all straightened out. All of those apps are free BTW and they can all be found here: www.Filehippo.com
Since I can't link yet... Google AVG and get AVG Free....its a good free AV program. Malawarebytes and CCleaner are also good programs.
So, someone was nice and got me a Windows 7 upgrade for my PC. There is no way in hell I was going to buy Vista. Supposedly the copy they got me requires that I own Vista. I have a legit copy of XP, so I am thinking I will have to return this and get the non-upgrade version. The fun part is that it was purchased today, and I cannot return it for 24 hours. I have some time on my hands and want to get this installed. Does anyone now a way to do a clean install of Windows 7 Upgrade if I only have XP?
You can't install the entire Windows 7 operating system with the upgrade disk. The upgrade cd piggybacks the files already on a vista-installed machine and adds on/removes/modifies from there.
^On top of that, the upgrade disc does give you an option to install a clean copy. The issue comes with the activation key associated with the disc as its an "upgrade only" key and not a general key like the old days. If you have an old copy of XP, install it clean (w/o drivers), then overlay the Win7 OS and you should be able to use the upgrade key that's assigned to the Win7 upgrade disc. That should save you a bit of cheddah...
Thanks for the quick reply. If you try to do a complete clean install, does it ask you to insert the Vista disk to confirm you are in fact upgrading from Vista? It's not about the money, it's just my overall and complete lack of patience. I was wondering if all I needed was to download a Vista ISO and burn it to DVD, for the sole purpose of inserting it during the verification portion of the 7 install. I think I'll just buy the full version tomorrow.
The program will check the HD looking for the prior installation of Vista before allowing the "upgrade" option to become operational. If it doesn't find one, it will only give you the custom "clean" option. Should you can get your hands on a Vista ISO, by all means use that. Check the side of your Win7 upgrade box and see what it says as it might say "Vista" on it. Then go on and load vista sans drivers and then overlay Win7 and activate.
